Title: This is why you wear a dust mask
Post by: Prospero on April 14, 2009, 10:38:32 AM
Man grows 5 centimeter tree branch in his lung (http://io9.com/5210651/man-grows-5-centimeter-tree-branch-in-his-lung)  :ye_gods: :ye_gods: :ye_gods:

Who knew lungs were such a great growing medium?

When I first read the title, I thought it said "Man grows a 5 centipede in his lung."  There's an interesting thought.

Unless that's an imperial ruler it looks like it's about 2.5 centimeter long.
The odds of him somehow inhaling that thing seem to be a tad larger than him growing that in there.

You've no idea what you've invoked by mentioning centipedes, have you?

Look at the left part of the lung tissue, it goes all the way through.

Well I am familiar with that rather..disturbing.. meme, it didn't cross my mind.   Somehow the thought of a centipede growing in someone's lungs prevents all other thoughts.

Why is all the serious business happening in Russia this past month?

Between this and the raping hairdresser, I'm gonna guess loose editorial standards.

No, Russia is just the Weekly World News of real life.

Yeah this story is bollocks. There's no roots on the thing in that picture. Plus, inside lungs? No light. No light, no photosynthesis. No photosynthesis, no growth of fir tree.

And this story was on the BBC website yesterday. My opinion of journalism gets lower every day.  :oh_i_see:

Never did that experiment as a child where you grow corn in a lightness environment? Im not sure if this is real but that plant thing does not look green.

No, because I had G.I. Joes and didn't grow up on a farm in bumfuck Iowa.   :awesome_for_real:

Given adequate nutrients plants can grow quite a bit without (and in search of) sunlight.

Seattle? :vv: Cmon never did that in middle school. Grow the corn in different conditions and chart the results. For some reason it grows faster initially without light. But its completely yellow and then it dies.

I would surmise it's because the seeds are built to start growing in lightless conditions (e.g. under soil or in a pile of poop or in the shadow of the parent plant), and then grow up and out as quickly as possible so they can find the light.  Once they find light, they can start photosynthesizing and storing energy.

Yes, lift up a pile of leaves and look at the failing plants growing under there. Don't you people do yardwork?

That said, the photo looks like a cutting, not a growth. No root system, clean cut on the stem.

OK, I'll concede the no-light thing, but:

Yeah!

Don't interrupt my raging hatred of the media, biatches!  :why_so_serious:
