Yeah, I don't see most of them working as actual game covers, but there's some really nice game-inspired artwork there.

For a long time, one of the things I've wanted to do, was create alternate inserts for all of my games, with matching spines and the most minimal art that could be found for each game. The problem is finding a printer with the right paper.

I like these (http://roguelikedeveloper.blogspot.com/2009/02/classic-video-game-covers.html) better.

They are awesome. But Demon's Souls? Fail. The original one is already too good.

Hah, the Dwarf fortress one is good.

Fucking elephants.

Both those links are just stolen from the SomethingAwful thread (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3067562). Just go through the thread, there are those and more.

The GAF collection cranked up the quality in the last few pages. I like it a lot more than the SA ones. I think I might start doing my own.

This was all worth it just to see someone make a Mirror's Edge cover that didn't blow chunks.

Every cover I've seen never got across the scope and uniqueness of the game if you had managed to miss the very nice commercials they had.

I hope in the future game covers go back to many of the styles displayed in those threads.

People that do this stuff professionally need to look at that collection and feel deeply ashamed.

That Mario Kart picture shot me into an "Oh my god if you shoot me with that fucking blue shell again..." flashback.

I've got some ideas. Now, they may end up sucking as they pass from brain through my meagre GIMP skillz into reality, but I'm up for giving it a shot.

OK. I want to do this on f13. I know we have a number of artists here. I'm busy digging up proper sized case templates from the internet as I want to do them for each console. PS3, Gamecube, etc. have some odd sizes and I don't really see the allure in doing this with old games as you can't actually print them out.

Does anyone have any interest in this? I'd want to do them in 300dpi for printing, etc.

I might take a run at this (in the "special olympics" sense of the word), if I can find a game that's not too decrepit to be relevant.  Class is out for the next two weeks or so, so I've got nothing but time.

Though I am a bit confused about wanting them in 300dpi; I was under the impression that DPI was something that got resolved at the printing end of things.  You hand them a file of size X by Y px and they give you a printed image of X/dps by Y/dps inches.  If you're going to be giving us templates, wouldn't they already be at 300dpi?

If I can dig up decent templates yea. My problem with now is finding such a thing. And it's not even that I want templates. I know for Wii, PS2, Xbox, GC and 360 they're all exactly dvd sleeve sized. Which is easy. Finding the exact size of a PS3 insert is harder.

PS3 insert:
27.3cm x 14.9cm
or
10 3/4" x 5 7/8"

Spine is centered, 1.425cm or 9/16"

oh hi thx

Edit: Also, What an awful size. I hate numbers that aren't nice and rounded.

Playstation 3 3224 x 1760 (164 spine)

360, PS2, and Wii are obviously dvd dimensions. Which are available all over the web. I'm too lazy to google them.
