Title: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Sairon on March 26, 2009, 02:33:17 PM http://kotaku.com/5183937/see-nintendo-demonstrate-rock-n-roll-climber (http://kotaku.com/5183937/see-nintendo-demonstrate-rock-n-roll-climber)
Seriously, not only does the game seem to be total shit without any merit, but take a look at graphics. Especially the waterfall parts when he's "rocking", or the animation when he's playing the guitar. Verdict? Nintendos take on realistic art direction? That looks like complete and utter monkey ass. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yoru on March 26, 2009, 02:57:17 PM The avatar climbs like it's an incredibly buff motherfucker with infinite endurance on a wall of nothing but shelves and jugs. I've seen two-week newbies with better technique.
So yeah, monkey ass. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: schild on March 26, 2009, 03:11:15 PM I couldn't get past the part where he said "Just me, the wall, and my fight against gravity."
Fuck Nintendo. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Aez on March 26, 2009, 03:22:37 PM I tried the Wii for the first time this week-end. It's complete shit. The pointer is not precise enough.
I played Wii sport and was simply laughing at how pathetic the control were. Also, the graphics are ass. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yegolev on March 26, 2009, 05:37:48 PM The sad part is that the room was probably full of people who would have made fun of me for playing River King.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Hawkbit on March 26, 2009, 06:34:37 PM I think it's an experiment to see how fucking stupid you can make a game and sell copies.

That experiment has been done to death. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Baldrake on March 26, 2009, 07:55:17 PM Ummm....
I might buy it. I really like the input mechanisms. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: raydeen on March 27, 2009, 06:55:17 AM I wouldn't buy it but I think it's an interesting tech demo for motion controlled ragdoll physics. Would be interesting to have an on screen character with no real preset animations, just movement based on how you're flailing around in real-time. I could get drunk and play something like that.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Azazel on March 27, 2009, 07:12:49 AM It's good to see that Nintendo has moved on from being the one company that constantly puts out polished Wii product (even if much of it sucks) and have now joined the ranks of wii-shovelware producers.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yegolev on March 27, 2009, 07:23:31 AM Did they ever fill up that hole in the desert they dumped those E.T. cartridges into? If Nintendo goes the shovelware route (like most of their 3rd-party devs), it might be filled soon.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: schild on March 27, 2009, 07:26:34 AM The masses have already proven they'll buy Nintendo shovelware as long as there's a reason or a hook.
Fuck, look at Wii Sports and Wii Play and Link's Crossbow training. In the big scheme of gaming, they are all the most pure form of absolute shit for the most vapid of individuals and people flock to it like it's some great achievement. As if they presented something new. No, all that shit in those forms had been around for years. Now you're just buying a console for them. The golf wasn't as good as the arcade golf simulators, bowling is so cheap that there's just no reason for Wii bowling (and even then the physics were dick). It's not even worth going on about it, if you think otherwise you're just wrong and possibly a big huge goddamn prom queen flake. (Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that if that's your thing.) Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yegolev on March 27, 2009, 07:29:08 AM Not sure what I was thinking. I seem to have blocked all memory of the crap Wii titles I have while assuming N is working on something worthwhile.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Riggswolfe on March 27, 2009, 07:31:46 AM Only 2 things on my Wii see any play:
Wii-Sports and Wii-fit. And this is only because it's the closest my fat ass can get to real exercise. Well, that and Tales of Symphonia but that's because my daughter loves the Tales series and anything I can get a 10 year old to play that doesn't have the words Pokemon in it I'm happy about. And honestly, Tales is kind of a fun JRPG-lite. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: schild on March 27, 2009, 07:33:52 AM Quote And this is only because it's the closest my fat ass can get to real exercise. So close, and yet, so far. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yegolev on March 27, 2009, 07:35:39 AM I'm guilty of Animal Crossing: City Folk and My Life as a King, although the latter got all grindy and shit at some point and I have slacked off. The boy really likes Pikmin, which I hate with a passion.
Yes, I lump the GC games into the Wii pantheon. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: schild on March 27, 2009, 07:40:32 AM I'm guilty of Animal Crossing: City Folk and My Life as a King, although the latter got all grindy and shit at some point and I have slacked off. The boy really likes Pikmin, which I hate with a passion. My Life as a King is the best game on the system and serves no actual purpose in being on the system. Probably would've sold a thousand times better on XBLA and PSN. And wouldn't have been a laggy fucking mess by the end. Quote Yes, I lump the GC games into the Wii pantheon. As you should since half the releases for the Wii in 2009 are re-releases of Gamecube games with tacked on waggle. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Yegolev on March 27, 2009, 07:54:41 AM Most of the titles released within the first six months (or more) are also GC+waggle. Couple that with this notion that N is giving up any idea of developing quality software and I'm less than shocked.
The fantastic part of this is that it seems to so far have near-zero impact on the traditional gaming industry. I was worried that we'd all be playing motion-sensitive bullshit minigames by now, but I can still find good software. I guess there is still time for this, however I'm encouraged by the recession since it should provide a boost to the gaming industry which I can expect will prevent a wholesale conversion from real games to waggle-puzzlers. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: HaemishM on March 27, 2009, 09:46:38 AM It's good to see that Nintendo has moved on from being the one company that constantly puts out polished Wii product (even if much of it sucks) and have now joined the ranks of wii-shovelware producers. Yeah, this. The titles on the console have seemed to devolve over time into just lazy shit. Granted, there was lazy shit at the start (Far Cry), but Nintendo at least did some good to great games (Metroid, Mario Galaxy) but this isn't even a good tech demo. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Big Gulp on March 27, 2009, 09:52:46 AM Yeah, this. The titles on the console have seemed to devolve over time into just lazy shit. Granted, there was lazy shit at the start (Far Cry), but Nintendo at least did some good to great games (Metroid, Mario Galaxy) but this isn't even a good tech demo. I think in the long run Nintendo is fucked. They may be making money now, but they're seriously alienating the core audience who kept them alive through the post-SNES era. It's going to bite them in the ass eventually. Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: HaemishM on March 27, 2009, 11:29:38 AM If they keep producing lazy-ass shit like this, yeah, long-run their home console units are fucked. The DS/portable unit will keep them alive maybe, but sooner or later even trend-followers won't pay $40-$50 to play Paper Doll Monkey Climb Air Guitar.
Title: Re: No Nintendo, it's not the 1st of april yet Post by: Velorath on March 27, 2009, 11:46:03 AM Yeah, this. The audience that kept them alive during that era was largely the handheld audience (Pokemon in particular, and then later with Nintendogs and Brain Age). The core audience has pretty much gotten exactly what the have with the past two generations of Nintendo consoles. A Mario game, a Zelda game, a Smash Bros. game, and a Mario Kart game (which seems to have a lot of crossover appeal to casuals as well). Going from the 64 to the GC, there was a pretty steep drop-off in sales on all their major franchises (except for Smash Bros.). Continuing to do things the way they were doing them would have fucked Nintendo even more in the long run. |
