Title: µblogging and You: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 13, 2009, 08:18:11 PM
An extension of the radicalthon perhaps? And more useful on a large scale?

We could use noisegrid.com to twitter our gaming. Yes, I own it and yes, it's already set up to be twitter like.

Here's the implementation:

Anyone interested?

And if you're wondering why not use twitter?

1. The service is up and down like an asian hooker.
2. f13 can control it and the users.
3. Only signal.
4. Easier and has a cooler name than twitter and a better tags/works with general RSS feeds (EVERYTHING gets an RSS feed and they can be combinated).

Thoughts?

Also, I had set it up to be News and shit before, but it's too hard to maintain that and f13 and develop. Not enough hours in the day.

Edit: This has been sitting unused for a long time, and no one has a gamer service that's better than twitter. Until now?

Note, this can be used for anything from:

1. What you've bought.
2. What you didn't buy and a link to why maybe?
3. One, two sentence opinions.
4. Links to new info.
5. An update on a single game. Yes, the frontpage will be FILLED with random shit, that's what tags are for.

Etc.

Basically, powered by you.

Ok, I've always wanted to say something that dumb. Not really powered by you, more like controlled by us (f13).

Also, blame MrHat, this was inspired by his following of Demon's Souls tweets.

Also, I should point out that once you're logged in, you don't have to log in again. That update block is right there under the banner on the frontpage. Also! We can do some sort of degrees of seperation from f13 users, all the first people that can use it are us and people I/f13 people invite and then from those trusted users (i can look up metrics on the back end), we can let them invite other people.

Noisegrid should have it's own bbcode sig function for the RSS feeds.

MrHat's Sigmyfeed.com thing.

Just sign up and I'll approve you. I really have absolutely no plans on letting outsiders (more than 1 degree of seperation from other users) anywhere near this thing. Twitter is too retarded and I won't have any of that.

Everyone who previously had an account is now an author, so you should see the sweet ass setup when you go to the frontpage if you're logged in.

Not easily done unless you want to hack the SMF code to allow for javascript and or dynamically pulling in data from an external source. That's why sigmyfeed creates an image.

Ah, then I'll mock something up. I guess it should only pull in the first X characters, is the big issue.

That's not the hard part. The hard part is mucking around with ImageMagick to create the dynamic images.

Stop naysaying. Twitter can eat a dick and fall in a sewer. That place is a cess pit and no one wants that unthreaded commenting shit mixed in with all the other twitter shitters. Without a closed system, everything eventually turns into shit. It's the MySpace effect.

Edit: The neat trick would be to just make all the noise grid stuff post to facebook and twitter so that people who use noisegrid don't have to give a fuck and it goes everywhere. Also, the twitter sigs are ugly also.

The world's most ugly and poorly formatted FAQ is now up. Gutting the frontpage to look how it does has effected any other page that requires any sort of formatting. Haha. So don't tell me it's ugly, I know. But who reads faqs anyway? (hint, authors should).

Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 12:40:50 AM
ScribeFire (the firefox plugin) does not work.
Deepest Sender does not work either.

And here's why:
Wordpress blogs are expected to use their monumentally stupid title/post setup and their terrible categories (instead of tags) setup.

We use neither of these. Noise Grid is far too heavily modified. It might be worth investigating making our own firefox plugin. :)

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 03:19:12 AM
https://twitter.com/noisegrid

Haha. The noise grid is now automatically injecting more noise into that godawful den of trashed DNA.

Edit: I hath killed it. Twitter is a formatting beast where the time necessary to put in is not worth the effort. Fuck them in their tiny bird ass.

Edit: Now I'm just playing with formatting. Lamaros, you've been upgraded.

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 04:05:33 AM
Haha wow ok.

Facebook, with their new profiles, fucked up every single RSS importer. RSS Connect seems to be working damned hard to get feed back onto the wall. Until we can do so though, if you really want to add it, I've made a page for it:

The Noise Grid (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Noise-Grid/69065728884)

Click on RSS/Blog for the feed. Really though, use your own RSS reader or just go to noisegrid.com, Facebook is also, now, as big a piece of shit as Twitter for fucking everything up.

Edit: Tempted to fool around with this (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1590) later.

You have some hefty demands that aren't particularly worth investigating.

In short: I hate half-text, so no. I'm not going to rework that entire box to show a sentence.

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 07:24:24 AM
Also, for those wondering, the theme on noise grid is so hacked apart and put back together that I fear upgrading past WP 2.6. So it'll probably be like that forever until a better solution comes out for posting in this style.

Holy fucking shit, so Wordpress is coming out with a totally awesome almost-next gen version of twitter for groups as a theme in like a week. Next week might be rough guys! Hahaha!

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 08:17:09 AM
I guess since I'll be updating and retheme-ing next week, I should take suggestions on what to add. The tags/text and meta stuff is the most important for functionality, but maybe there's something else! Maybe a list of authors! Discuss!

Does the wp have some reasonable model for submitting posts without involving the browser?  Mostly it'd be avoiding the login/cookie/sid step and being able to just do an HTTP post with content/tags/username/password.  At that point wiring up various stuff to spew onto the 'grid becomes trivial.

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: Quinton on March 14, 2009, 09:11:25 PM
Also, I really like the assorted banners.  How many are there total?  Seems like a goodly number.

Title: Re: Gaming Twitter: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 14, 2009, 09:25:20 PM
The problem with the formatting on this particular brand of wordpress blog is there's no great way for plugins to work as it essentially autofills the topic and body in a way that WP doesn't. Also, it uses proper tags instead of WP's half-assed categories and that's why RSS works so well. It would need its own Firefox plugin. I'd love to make one that's just like the ctrl+f find bar that just has 2 blank boxes and a submit button. Like:

Edit: There are 34 Banners, but I'm going to need to remake all of them when P2 comes out, so this week during breaks from Edgar, I'll be doing banners.

Forget tinyurl!

Bit.ly is where this shit is motherfuckin at!

http://www.bit.ly/

Seriously. Install that firefox plugin. God it's fucking great.

Edit: This shit is like web 2.0. Or even web 3.0. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Edit 2: What is an archived URL?
bit.ly retains a mirrored copy of the source URL as it appeared when it was shortened. This is useful if the site you are trying to visit has experienced a failure do to heavy traffic or for examining historical data.

FUCK TINYURL

Also, blame MrHat, this was inspired by his following of Demon's Souls tweets.

You have some hefty demands that aren't particularly worth investigating.

 :oh_i_see:

Is it possible to get email notifications for people replying to your nogs? (That's what I'm calling it, nog, deal with it).  Needs something to remind people that you can comment/discuss each post.

Maybe we get a "nog this" button in f13 to cross post? :)

I guess what I'm really trying to get is some sort of cross awareness of what's going on in NG.com while in F13.

While I love the layout, I don't like scrolling very much.  Would it be possible to maybe drop the font size a bit?  fmylife is a good example I think.  It's clean but there's still lots of posts right there in front without too much hassle.

Can you get rid of the "RSS" text in the RSS buttons on the side? The icon should be sufficient imo.

I'm lazy.  I don't like to open windows.  I don't like to copy and paste.  I don't like to scroll.

Cater to me!

Edit: The banner up top, I think it'd be cool if the "noise grid" text up top spilt over the blue posting box below it.  So basically, the image banner is lined up (same width) as the blue posting box, but the noisegrid text is all on it's own over the side.

Like this:

NG should provide its own url expander.  If I drop a url in a post it should just convert to a http://noisegrid.com/goto/abcdef or whatever thing.  That way you don't have to deal with a third party *and* you can gather useless metrics on link clickage or whathaveyou ^^

Perhaps you don't see the appeal there, and I'm fine with that. But the What are You Playing thread could never turn into conversation on a simple topic of what someone was playing, with this format (and especially when we switch over to P2), it can easily be an entire avenue of discussion for the community that was unexplored before.

Also, Twitter doesn't have threaded comments, whereas noise grid will, and that makes all the difference.

You can't blame the Twitter style of instant conversation for being the problem over there, you can blame the people.

Also, hey pal, WE didn't piss in your cereal. :oh_i_see:

Can't twitter at work, same as every other fancy Web 2.0 thing. Give me http that looks innocent to the casual webadmin.

Of course, but this is far more efficient, and interesting. No one is actually forcing you by the way. Was there a particular game that you wanted to talk about or mention? Yes, I know I'm being a smartass.

You're telling me f13 looks more innocent than that other site? Am I not getting the joke here, one is very obviously a forum, the other is a page with text.

There, I changed the subject since it's not really like twitter, since it has threaded replies. Also, as someone points out, the What Are you Playing thread was more like twitter since everyone just replied and didn't talk anyway.

I'm more interested in what other people are playing at the moment and why. And thats the advantage of a single thread over everybody talking in detail about their obsession of the microsecond on his own.

Yes, both are interesting to different people, but they are not the same. Neither in form nor in content. Some might use both, some neither.

And yes, a forum is innocent for my line of work. Nobody checks if there is one timewaster forum nested between the tech forums  on my monitor.

I'll unlock the other thread, but if you don't tell us what you're playing, I will pop you right in the jaw with a sock full of lemons.

How could I refuse that offer? Thanks, I take a look at the other thing at home, but it screams gaming too much for work. The list of games at the right side in easily readable letters doesn't help my paranoia.

Fair enough dude.  It's all RSS too, so you could just run it through your reader-du-jour.

This is a lot of fun, so much so that I'm afeared of abusing it.  Trying to keep it low-key, containing my numerous ideas in the womb of my mind until I determine it is safe to birth them onto the cold slab of The Noise Grid.

There is not a big blank spot or anything, they just poofed off the listed... You can still click the tag link in someones post, but some aren't listed on the right anymore.

Title: Re: µblogging and You: Noisegrid.com
Post by: schild on March 26, 2009, 05:07:08 AM
It's the most popular tags, not a full list.

But (for example) I've used the Battlefield: Heroes tag three times, and the list on the right is displaying things used once. Also it seems to be taking only from the top (pre-E), but leaving everything on the bottom (lists to Z).

Or am I confusing popular with most used?

You know, it doesn't really matter, once P2 comes out, I'm switching it to a different tagging system. As such, let's not worry about how the current one sorts them. (awesome solution, imo)

Fixed them because I got tired of seeing it start with F also.

It is purely a band-aid though.

It's getting there. Does not work in Chrome and it's something I'll be fixing.... No Time Soon (if ever). (chrome viewership on the site was 0% anyway)

Title: Re: µblogging and You: Noisegrid.com

Alright. Fin (for now). Works great in firefox. Works OK in IE. The blank tag on the top of the tags list should be above the comments (it's an RSS feed for all the tags). I can't find a way to make it not show up in IE. In short, IE still sucks for doing dynamic shit like this on the web. That said, when you post a comment, it instantly appears without refreshing, same with a full new post. It's all very slick now. Enjoy. Also, I'm on Wordpress 2.71 now (previously 2.6), so I'm gonna dig up stuff and see what other plugins can make it a... better experience.

Edit: It does not, and will not (probably ever) work in Chrome. I don't know what the hell is going on there. If you want to try Safari and Opera and let me know, that'd be great.

Awwww, use Firefox then. Chrome is funky. It does not like all the dynamic stuff at ALL.

The biggest problem (if you will) with this thing is that it was splitting content/posts off of f13. Also. harder to read and a seperate thing to remember to look up. I'd actually (legitimately) forgotten about it after my last post, more than a month ago, which was still on the first page.
