Title: Bioshock 2
Post by: Hawkbit on March 08, 2009, 11:10:53 PM
I didn't see this posted anywhere, but there's a teaser site that's getting updated quite often (daily?).

Despite being disappointed where BioShock ended up, I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Perhaps the Big Daddy mentioned here is one of the ones that got cut from the original game.

I don't know why, but Bioshock just didn't click for me. Not real interested in a sequel.

A new Freedom Force game, though...would love that.

I really enjoyed Bioshock.  It felt like a truly unique world, even if it was the same game design that's been done time again.  Had a decent story, and enough creep factor to keep me interested but not enough to scare me away.  I hope in Bio2 they make it so that weapons and abilites are seamless and don't have to be switched between.

I just hope the sequel doesn't drag itself on with lots of repetitive crap for the sake of increasing playing time.  Bioshock 1 was a fucking brilliant game for the first two thirds or so, and then you could tell they ran out of ideas but didn't feel like the game was long enough to justify the price tag yet.

Bioshock had gorgeous setpieces, like 4 types of enemies including bosses, and a single twist.

The setpieces are so unbelievable that they make the game. I remain unconvinced that they're capable of making an entire experience. I'd have been just as happy to have no mobs, have stories play at scripted choke points and just get to walk around their little pocket universes.

Look, I get the fact that back in the day a couple mobs made a game. Hell, even today with most indie stuff, I'm ok with only 1 or 2 enemies in total, that's never bothered me as changing the clothing on something generally doesn't make massive changes to the game. But when it comes to a title like this, and that one main enemy (besides the Big Daddy) is a fucking crazed hobo, well, that's just unacceptable. Also, the action was largely piss poor.

Also, the action was largely piss poor.

The first time you fought a big daddy was pretty epic. You're unloading machinegun rounds in his face and the damn thing JUST. WON'T. DIE.

As you get more powerful and can just elec shotgun them to death, yeah, the action becomes poor.

Some other staged pieces, like when the classical music starts playing at fort frolic and a mass of splicers comes your way were durn good too, although I'd say that walking around the trapped hallway in that place with spider splicers chasing you   was also pretty fun.

Shitty puzzles. Ammo dispenseries. Constantly jamming a syringe into your arm.

The few cool bits didn't outweigh the fact that the game just didn't live up to the potential of the environment and Irrational's track record.

You folks are crazy. Bioshock's worst failing was that the enemies got a little reptitive towards the end, and the main climax seemed to occur too quickly for the story. I look forward to #2.

Ryan doesn't have to be dead.

It will probably answer the question of "what happened to Rapture after you save the Little Sisters?". There's a reason why young girls are being taken and that reason is that Rapture needs more Little Sisters.

I read somewhere that this is supposed to be a prequel, but isn't the original game set before 1967?

Yeah frankly I thought the gameplay flat out sucked. Bioshock is probably the most overrated game of all time. A cool theme and detailed environment do not a complete game make. They would have to really mix up the gameplay model for me to be interested in a sequel.

Yes, BUT: They should have put the tour of the Little Sister facility somewhere before then, because that was pretty cool.  Seeing that backstory, I mean, not the stupid Big Daddy treasure hunt that was wrapped around it.

Ken Levine apparently not involved in BioShock 2 at all. In fact, all of 2K Boston is working on something entirely different. BioShock 2 is being developed by 2K Marin. (http://au.gamespot.com/news/6206477.html?tag=topslot;thumb;4)

Awesome.  :oh_i_see:

Actually, I'll wait and see what they produce (2K Marin being developed from taking some 2K Boston folks and 2K Australia folks who wanted to keep their jobs) but Levine is certainly seen as being the driving force behind BioShock.

I am cautiously hopeful. I read the Game Informer article and am intrigued. Playing the prototype Big Daddy? The little sisters having a bigger role? An older little sister as the main villian who can and will hunt you through Rapture if you do to much with the little sisters? Being able to use plasmids and weapons at the same time?

It sounds like baby jesus on an awesome tricycle of awesomeness to me.

Then again, in 2010 I may be posting in rage at how they ruined my memories of the first game...

I think that Bioshock 2 will be carried by the atmosphere established in the first game, the 2k team working on the game haven't managed to bring anything new to the table and honestly it looks more like a mod than a new game. That said, it can be some fun playing with Plasmids and the big fat drill  :awesome_for_real:

In this game you play as a Big Daddy instead of a regular man.

I don't really understand why they keep hyping the underwater sections. All that makes me think of are those awful fucking watersuit sections in KOTOR. Amusing for about 15 seconds, then mind numbing as you have to wade around at about 2 mph.

Plasmids + weapon = great improvement.

Hopefully you won't have to jam a syringe into your arm every few minutes, that almost ruined the game for me.

So you can't understand why they'd hype underwater sections, because one time you played a game that implemented underwater sections poorly?

Likewise.  I can't believe that this game STILL won't run in Vista.  I have to go to compatibility mode and play in DX9.  Is it too much to ask for a patch?

Title: Re: Bioshock 2

I'm running Windows 7, so the complaint is more about the boring part and not the crashing. It behaves very weird under W7. If it crashes it reverts to default settings and to be able to change them you have to turn off compatibility, change the settings and then turn on compatibility to get the audio to work.

I held off buying it because of the DRM, then bought it when the price dropped and the DRM was removed, but never got around to installing (or even cracking the shrinkwrap), then bought it off Steam for 5 bucks, played it a little on and off, thought it was ok, then forgot I was actually playing it a few months ago until I saw this thread today.

So, clearly, I'm excited at the prospect of Bioshock 2 and it'll be Day 1 for me.  :why_so_serious:

I'm pretty sure I'll be disappointed in this title. Might still buy it day 1, but BioShock worked due to the atmosphere in the Medical Pavillion and was downhill from there; I'm not sure how being a Big Daddy is going to give me a whole new experience.

In fact, playing BioShock as a Big Daddy sounds more like it should be a player mod, not a fully fledged sequel.

From what I've read, instead of an evil industrialist objectivist male (or evil opportunist criminal male, depending on who you saw actually running Rapture), we've got an evil religious socialist female in the main villain role.

Again, everything I've heard makes it sound like a fan mod rather than a fully fledged sequel.

Heads up.  If you buy it through steam you'll need to register the game before it even starts.  The serial is available via a right-click menu in the games list.  It's most definitely not the serial number that the retarded Securom application prints out for you underneath the input box.

Heads up x2.  In order to save your game, you must log into Games for Windows Live.  Whatever fuckstick thought that up needs to be tied into a potato sack and drowned in horse piss.

Heads up x3.  Once you log into GFW Live, it will download a patch of some kind.   It leads you to believe that it's an update of GFW Live, but it appears to do something to dig its scabrous hooks deeper into Bioshock.  Once you've signed in, you're literally boned if you try to sign back out.  It stops your game immediately and throws you back to the main menu.

I want my goddam money back.

Thanks for the heads up on the GFWL requirements.  That's a guaranteed no-sale from me.

I have come to terms with DRM being in my media and it's not worth the fight anymore if it's a minor annoyance.  But GFWL is simply too cumbersome to me.  It ruined GTA4 for me... I was never really able to see why everyone hated it so much because I always got tired of spending 3-5 minutes logging into shit just to play.

Again, thanks.

From what little SP I've done (about an hour+) the gameplay is more ambush oriented and you're usually fighting a group of splicers at once. Haven't been far enough to really comment on the story.

The MP is very addictive if you can tolerate all the hassle of matchmaking that goes with it.

I was going to wait for the 5 dollar steam sale, but I promised myself to never let GFWL touch my computer again.

Its fucked up, but I'm not even interested in stealing this game because of this. I guess the anti-piracy shit works.

The MP is very addictive if you can tolerate all the hassle of matchmaking that goes with it.

Oh fuck. I remember trying to matchmake with DOW2 using GFWL. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated with a video game. Sitting around for 20 minutes looking for a matchup, only to be faced against a rank 70 poopsocker and his friends - or people leaving on countdown.

Games for Windows LIVE: It's like ship cancer.

I haven't bought the game yet but I read on another forum that you can create an offline gfwl account and play without logging in to gfwl.

My experience with GFWL has been rather tolerable, in the sense that after a horrible install and setup process, you can pretty much leave it alone and never fuck with it again.  I can confirm offline play as well.  As a service, it sucks, but it has the decency to mostly leave you alone after that first session.  It's certainly not enough to prevent someone from buying a game because of it, imo.

I only just bought this game, haven't read the thread because of possible spoilers.

The windows live fucking bullshit I had to go through to initially play and now each time I start up the game is going to be the final nail in PC gaming.  There is no way I'll be buying another game that has this shit in it and it seems like Microsoft is trying to push it on everyone so I might as well just give up, buy a PS3 and play my games there because the frustration of trying to use a gamepad in an fps is now far less than what used to be the simple act of starting up my fucking pc games.

Fake edit: I see the last few posts in this thread are also about this, good.  And yes I know there is no point in complaining about this because it's just another annoyance they are going to ram down our throats whether we like it or not.  I am growing increasingly sympathetic to the unabomber.

I know GFWL is a bit of a pain to set up initially (had to do it for Fallout 3), but once set up, I had no real issue with Dirt 2 (for instance). Just put in the account info and select 'sign in automatically' and then forget it.

Do I like having YET ANOTHER (other than Steam) online verification 'service' go through making sure I'm on the up and up? Nope, of course not, but it seems that's just how its going to go from here on out.

Same with me gfwl really isn't that big a deal.  Frankly though this game isn't looking good enough to warrant buying regardless.  Maybe super cheapy steam.

Honestly, the only terrible experience I've had with GFW is Fallout 3, which was only partially GFW's fault.  The interplay with the Steam first-time install failing on itself, needing to patch Fallout 3 through its own crappy patcher for wharever reason, and needing to update GFW multiple times was such a clusterfuck that it left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

I still think it's stupid that it has to patch after I start the game up (which is also something that annoys me to no end on 360) when it has some external application as well, but it wasn't a nightmare when I played Red Faction late last year.

Oh fuck. I remember trying to matchmake with DOW2 using GFWL.

I downloaded the DOW2 demo and after spending 5 minutes trying to figure out how to even run it I uninstalled.

Yahtzee review pleases me by conforming with my lazy assumptions about this game  (that it is not good) (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1494-BioShock-2)

Just spotted this on sale for AU$30 (for the special edition - down from AU$150. I almost bought the PC version, but checked the back of the box because I remembered "hey - there was something about the DRM on this one", saw GFWL listed, then thought "fuckit" and bought the 360 version instead.

Tossing up if it'd be worth going ack and getting a second one for the multiplayer - is it any good?

Having played through BioShock 2 (Xbox 360) and its Minerva's Den DLC, I actually enjoyed BioShock 2. Lamb isn't as strong a villain as Ryan / Fontaine and yes there is a stretch to fit her into a pre-existing universe, but the story was solid and I enjoyed the ability to set up traps before sending my Little Sister off to harvest Adam from a corpse. It's a bit of a change for an FPS to have you entrench a position in your own way rather than just fight through waves of opponents.

The part where you play as a Little Sister was very nicely done and a great change of pace. Overall the DLC was worth the points: a nicely contained story, even if the OMG SHOCK TWIST ending was fairly foreseeable.

But then I think I like Rapture as a game environment and as a setting.
