Title: Sunshine Post by: Mrbloodworth on March 04, 2009, 07:39:57 AM Good si-fi flick, not really the most ground breaking plot, but the visuals FX and camera work are fantastic, and a good portion of the movie has a good "Alien" feel to it.
Anyway, one to watch if your looking for a Alien + 2001 + Event horizon mash up si-fi thing. STUNNING visuals, almost artistic video photography, convincing acting.. Title: Re: Sunshine (2007) Post by: schild on March 04, 2009, 07:42:19 AM Bad Event Horizon.
/cue someone else saying Event Horizon is a bad In the Mouth of Madness. Edit: It's really not an Alien/2001/Event Horizon mashup thing. It's more like, 1/10ths Solaris, 9/10ths Event Horizon. Title: Re: Sunshine (2007) Post by: Bunk on March 04, 2009, 07:44:29 AM Good sci-fi movie with a solid cast, that cops out with a moster-chase ending.
Title: Re: Sunshine (2007) Post by: eldaec on March 04, 2009, 07:45:25 AM What bunk said, the ending was crap. Though I have no idea what a good ending might be.
Title: Re: Sunshine (2007) Post by: Yegolev on March 04, 2009, 07:46:16 AM I'll just say that the movie is full of Bad Science, also a tad obvious. It's not at all bad if you are stupid or ignorant. Ending could have been worse, but I'm not sure if it could have been better.
Title: Re: Sunshine (2007) Post by: gryeyes on March 04, 2009, 07:50:13 AM Good movie but the strange transformation into a slasher ruined it for me.The pseudo science didn't bother me much. And I found the cinematography to be beautiful.
Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: HaemishM on March 04, 2009, 08:30:55 AM Yeah, what others have said. A good flick (junk science not withstanding) that would have been great with an ending that wasn't... well, not really sure what the fuck that ending was supposed to be.
Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: Mrbloodworth on March 04, 2009, 08:37:29 AM Yeah watched it last night, i'm not sure what was up with the slasher thing, lol. I found the rest of the movie very well done, and i stand by my mash up statement, those are the vibes i got from watching it.
Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: Ookii on March 04, 2009, 10:17:15 AM I'm sorry schild, I have to go with Sunshine > Event Horizon, and that's factoring in the Sam Neil awesomeness quotient.

That's because you're insane.Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: Tale on March 04, 2009, 10:47:21 AM I really liked Sunshine.
And they played one of my favourite bands (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JZaB92qUnY) over the end credits. Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: DraconianOne on March 04, 2009, 10:50:23 AM Sunshine was mostly ruined for me not just by the ending but by a stupid, stupid plot point early on. It tried hard for the most part to convey a sense of realism but one thing totally fucked it up.
Wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. Title: Re: Sunshine Post by: Riggswolfe on March 05, 2009, 01:22:37 PM Sunshine was a great movie! There are some quibbles with it, but Sunshine was about 75% great. I hated the cinematography at the end because to this day I'm still not 100% sure what happened or how several characters actually died. I suspect that you'd have to have a past with drugs to understand it. Also: ETA: And Event Horizon was 100X better, though it was also ruined by silliness towards the end. It could easily have been something much scarier if they'd made it more of a haunted house/excorcist situation. I'm the guy that can accept installing a virus on an alien ship (ID4), only needing to dig 800 to drop a nuke on an asteroid the size of Texas (Armageddon), and one guy hacking the entire infrastructure for a nation while up against a guy whose most advanced weapon is a car (Die Hard 4). But those are supposed to be summer blockbuster popcorn-eating shlock. I'm Gabe in that PA edition (which was about Die Hard 4).
For me, Sunshine tried to take itself too seriously, which made the failure of premise all the more noticable. Seemed like they jumped right to the character drama on the voyage with the occasional allusion to some prior failed mission. But if the entire solar system is at steak!!!/, you'd do a crapload more than try one ship a year. And you'd especially not do the same thing the second time that you know failed the first. The throwaway line about using up all of Earth's resources was I guess supposed to engender the sense of overwhelming all-or-nothing, but there again: what happens if humanity was right and this mission succeeds? Anyway, overthinking the wrong stuff as usual, but it's what I felt the one time I watched it. |
