Title: The Last Remnant
Post by: Trippy on March 02, 2009, 10:47:21 AM
Just how bad is this game?

It's coming out soon for the PC. I just tried the demo and was like :uhrr: but the sheer (apparent) complexity of the combat intrigues me. I have a 360 Controller for my PC (assuming I can find it) so the UI is less of an issue though Square is one of those companies, like Capcom, that really shouldn't be doing PC ports of their games.

Game is nearly unplayable with the keyboard and mouse. not to mention the 'quality ptoblems' square has with demos. the game might be good but there is no way im playing it on the 360 or pc. Waiting for ps3 version itt.

That's pretty much what it is. Apparent complexity. Thew about 20 hours in it, and, while being a fun game with above average voice acting, it most certainly isn't deep. All you gotta remember for most boss battles is "kill the adds first". Pretends pretty well, though. DO NOT deactivate QTE's, otherwise you'll fall asleep during battles.

Runs in a reasonably acceptable manner if installed on the xbox's hd.

Has anyone tried it with a PC and controller?  Or won't that work?  I'm wondering since there is a free trial and I'm really bored today.  REALLY REALLY REALLY bored.

There was a controller config option on the PC format, how in depth that goes I don't know.

The mouse/keyboard config options were crap and as a result it was unplayable. 15 mins playing with trying to adjust controls to a playable state resulted in 5 mins before I uninstalled, and I'm normally pretty patient and willing to adjust regarding stuff like this.

I'll wait for some console version, I think.  I don't want to be bored and annoyed at the same time.

360 version has been out for 6 months.

PS3 release date should be announced shortly.

Oh, now I remember. Thats the game I bought together with Infinite Undiscovery and which vanished in a box somewhere.

Never started those games once. I think The Lost Odyssey broke my will to play JRPGs for a while.

All I want from the PS3 version is the same level of awesome that are the 360 controller buttons showing up on screen for the PC version, instead of whatever you have them mapped to.  It shows a real drive to actually port their games  :oh_i_see:

I finally dug out my Xbox 360 Controller and the demo plays fine with it as you would expect being a console port.

That's awesome, but does the game suck?

Nope. It's actually quite fun. Not terrible. Not worth 50usd either.

Sigh, story line didn't sound promising. I hate these 'save your family / girl' setting. I barely know my sister and I'm supposed to save her. yeah right. Howabout some character familiarization first? PASS.

Storyline?  I'd fail Infinite Undiscovery on that right off, however I enjoy the crafting.  The rest of the mechanics don't do enough for me to compel my attention, unfortunately.

I really don't pay attention to storyline in JRPGs very much, generally they are lame or stupid and likely derivative.  Sometimes I find one that is interesting but the mechanics turn out to be a cockblock (Lost Odyssey).  Rarely both are great (Digital Devil Saga).

Awful framerates and mediocre story made me ragequit this for the 360. Does it run any better on PC?

I thought it was a neat system, but the grind points and completely fucking random orders availability were murder.

You. You heal people. I gave you healers for this. Why when someone's hurt do you not have a HEAL THEM option, dicks.

Never tried the Xbox 360 version but the PC demo runs okay on my (now) crappy A64 X2 3800+ (2 GHz) and 7800 GT. There are extensive graphics settings and they defaulted to mostly "medium" quality on my machine.

PC version is out now in stores. The game requires Steam to play, even if you don't buy it on Steam (which isn't available till April 9th). At least it doesn't require the discs to be in the drive to play as well.

The PC version apparently still has the "Disc 1 content", "Disc 2 content" split like the console version so if you are type that likes to complete all the quests you might want to do some research into how to get all the subquests on "Disc 1".

what he said

Yeah, this is even bigger win than the xbox buttons showing up in the demo.  Is Square even trying anymore?

It's a config option. You can change it to show the PC keys, even in the demo. They should've made that the default setting but it's not like they didn't realize people without controllers would want to see the keyboard commands.

Ah, my bad, somehow I couldn't find it in the demo options, and I was even looking for it.  I didn't even make it through to the end of the demo though, my computer started having really bad issues processing everything after I did one fight.

Still, the fact that they still require the second disk bridging on a PC is flat out retarded.  Building PC games based on Xbox failures, go team!

Edit:  Unless I'm missing something obvious, which I probably am, now that I've stopped to think about what I just said.  Does it actually require the second disk, or does the first disk's content just become unaccessible once you get past that point in the game?

And don't get me wrong, I really wanted to like this game, I'm not just randomly hating on the Xbox for no good reason.

The PC install is two discs. But you don't need the disc(s) in the drive to play so I believe it's the latter where some content gets cut off once you are past a certain point in the game.

Okay, just making sure they hadn't gone full retard there.  Thanks.
