I was in my favorite chinese-supplied retailer last night buying WoW and I perused the music dvd racks as I always do and noticed a new Iron Maiden DVD was out, with previously unreleased early footage, it's called The Early Years, oddly enough.

It trumped the Spidey2 and WoW I bought, spent a couple hours jamming along with maiden on the bass (fingers...hurt), such a great metal band. The thundering bass and soaring melodic guitar solos had a huge influence on my old band back when, and to me at least, the music really holds up, disregarding the spandex and Di'Anno falsetto which date it a bit.

If you're into 'classic' metal or Maiden in particular, I highly recommend this DVD set (2). I haven't even gotten to the interviews yet, there are several live shows included, their first recorded show, another show from that year (79,80,81 somewhere in there) and a show from the Beast tour in 83 or 84.

Best part? It's "part 1" of a series. Hell yeah!

I have to confess that I've been collecting dvd concerts as a lark and actually find myself playing with a good number of them to relieve stress.  My latest play-a-long is the Rush concert from Rio.  Not the best live footage of the band but still a showing of 3 incredible musicians.  I also seem to go back to a classic a lot: Queen live at Wembley (1983?).  

Anyway, thanks for the tip... being yet another ex-musician, I will definately check it out.

I tried once to find the dvd version of an old Maiden tape I had, I think it was the same tour they used for Live After Death (maybe the name of the video, too?). Couldn't find it, so I was nicely surprised to see this set.

I'm slowly amassing a collection of concert DVDs and other cool music DVDs. The one I tend to jam along with most is the newer Zeppelin dvd, on guitar, mostly (I play several instruments, but mostly guitar and bass, the latter of which I played primarily during my professional career). One of my other favorites is Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii, just don't watch the director's cut, it stinks (the original cut is on the DVD, though). The Floyd DVD was recorded circa Dark Side of the Moon.

I'm not an ex-musician, just an ex-professional musician ;) I'll play until I die, music is life.

I'm not a big fan of concert DVD's anymore, because most new acts just suck it live. But I can say that I've never seen or heard of a bad Rush live show, whether it be on tape, CD, DVD or VHS. They are just the consumate musicians to me.

If it's a concert DVD you want and it's gotta be old, "The Who - Live at the Isle of Wight" (1970) is right at the top of my list.  Oh, it's raw as hell and fraught with all sorts of technical glitches and limitations.  But all the magic and genius of a rock and roll original at the height of their power comes shining through.  Maximum R&B 4 teh win!

I own this one also.  It's getting hard to find concert footage of great bands that are focused more on the musicianship and less on the production.  This is a great video for people that want to see the Who in their raw form.

The one I jam along with on occasion is the newest Allman Brothers DVD.  

I love concert DVDs because they make you sit down and pay attention to the music, like people did before music became background noise for every possible situation.  I like my live CDs and DVDs as raw as possible too.  If there's a mistake, I want to hear it.  If I wanted to hear the exact same thing as the studio record... I'd listen to the studio record.

BTW, stay away from the Hendrix At Berkeley DVD.  I thought it was going to be awesome because I loved his tone on BoG and he had Mitch Mitchell once more.  But his guitar sounds anemic and some of the performances are underwhelming.  I was really disappointed by that version of "Machine Gun", though Mitch is partially to blame for that.  It's RAT ATAT ATAT, not rat a-tata-tata.

I've been wanting to get more concert DVD's, but all I have atm is AC/DC. Any videos of my old favorite punk bands have a shitty Super 8 quality to them, so it isn't really worth it.

Man, I'm listening to Powerslave for the first time in years.  It kicks ass!
