Title: Replacing default "failed to load" page
Post by: sinij on February 17, 2009, 01:31:48 PM
How do you replace default failed to load page or even prevent it from showing?

I upgraded my hosts file with blacklisting of some dark places on the internet and now I occasionally see "failed to load" pages in banner space. I previously used no-script but discovered my SO being careless with enabling everything when using my computer. So I had to hard-block everything via hosts. Please advise.

You can post a web page somewhere and point your hostsfile to that for those links.

Alternatively use Ad Block Plus on those sites.  (Cue Schild telling you not to use Ad Block because it stops revenue generation.)

You shouldn't use Ad Blockers, it stops revenue generation.

Set up a cheap box as a Linux firewall and proxy server. Don't block in a host file, just have the proxy serve whatever you want, such as a transparent.gif image.

If you only care about blocking sites while Web surfing and you only use Firefox get something like BlockSite.

I don't need Ad Block Plus myself. Over the years my brain has (d?)evolved to the point where I automagically filter out ad-banner and never really notice them. Except the annoying ones that make sounds when I accidentally move my mouse over them. Those go into Opera's content blocker list.

Issue here is not securing my machine, but fool-proofing it. It was implemented via hosts blacklistings.

Undesirables redirected to black hole, is there a way to redirect them to a transparent gif without getting 2nd box involved? I could setup server on my machine, but I think it is excessive to just serve transparent gif.  Maybe I can configure my WRT router to do it... hmn...

The proxy can be running on your machine, it doesn't have to be a separate box, but I've never set one up on Windows before so I couldn't say how hard that would be.

Sounds like you need to keep your SO off of your machine.

It would be dead easy. You would just use some sort of VMware type thingy so you could do it on Linux.
