Title: Considering resubbing, some quick questions.
Post by: Raging Turtle on January 30, 2009, 09:59:27 AM
So I'm thinking about falling off the wagon again!

Three quick questions before I plunge the needle into my vein:

1.  I upgraded to TBC before I quit the last time - seeing as I've never gotten a character past 45 or so, I won't be buying WotLK for a while, but is it possible to download the full client from blizzard once I resub?  I seem to remember doing something like this before, and my old install CDs are in another country.

2.  How often are new servers released?  Once a month?  Never?  I'd much rather start on a fresh server that isn't dominated by level 70's and up, if that's possible.

3.  I'm done with RP servers.  Bad experience with a guild last time... so the question is PvE or PvP?  Which do you prefer?

1) Yes, you can download the client.  If you log into your account at the community site, there should be a link for downloading the installer.  Expect it to take a while to do the actual installation.  Also, since you have TBC you should qualify for the LotLK 10 day trial.  Though I suppose since you don't have any characters over 45 you couldn't really take advantage of the new stuff.

2)  No idea on this one, sorry.  I've only been back playing for two weeks myself.

3) PvE.  I don't like getting ganked unexpectedly.  To me, PvP is like sex:  consensual can be awesome, non-consensual not so much.

A new one was opened just now.  Like, today.  This means there will be 70's by the end of the day.  I am not kidding.

PVE vs PVP: PVE servers tend to be more populated and with a little finesse you can play the AH on both the alliance and horde sides via arbitrage.  PVP servers attract better players because newbies look at the PVP server type and go 'aw hell no!'

A couple new servers show up once every month or so, but they aren't "fresh" servers. There massive dump off points where overpopulated servers can bleed excess population.

You also don't want to play on a 'fresh' server regardless. The last fresh start servers they put up, were populated for a week, then turned into ghost towns once 90% of everyone went back to their old mains. THEN they just became excess pop dump servers anyways, so it would still be full of 80's.

Pick an established server and sell lowbie ore/herbs for ridiculous prices and enjoy. There are always enough alts going up again to find groups for most of the old dungeons of that is a concern. The dungeons that don't suck total balls at least.

I went PvE, random gankage isn't my thing.

What's the name of the new server?  Not seeing an announcement on the general forums.  Is it a transfer server or not, and does that have an impact on turning into a ghost town?  I remember a week or so ago seeing Borean Tundra go up as a non-transfer...

Still not sure on PvP or PvE - I'm definitely not a hardcore player, but at the same time an element of risk can be fun.

If you try the Lich King trial, download the Wrath installer from the version installer program first.  You'll have to do it again if you grab the BC for regular play then try Wrath.

That said, it might be worth you waiting until hitting 55 to try the trial.  I don't know if you can play a BC account using the Lich King installer.  Logically I'd say yes since they should work the same in those parts of the game, but I haven't tried.

I'm in the Czech Republic, but I have (had) a US account.  So probably US.

Saurfang, it's EU.

Risk can be fun.  But as a more of a time starved player than anything else, I prefer not to lose time when I don't have to.  Plus, I don't like to be bothered when I'm not asking for it.   But, that's just my personal preference.

And PVP + DIKU = meh.

The death penalty in wow is so minor that I would never consider playing on a PVE server. I guess now that they have transfers of PVE > PVP it doesnt so much matter. But I guess thats me. Do I gang lowbie alliance all day long? No. But if I am questing and clearing to a quest mob, or a node or quest item and some alliance runs up and grabs it in front of me, I NEED the option to be able to let them know they just made a bad decision.

As for servers, pick an established one. The communities are better in general, and take a gathering tradeskill, you will be rich. On Tich, Mithril Ore is selling for 50-70 gold per stack, and Thorium even more. Also lowbie gems for for between 10 and 50 gold.

Yeah, I'm considering this too.  Is the Death Knight  population obnoxious or is it not too bad?  Not sure I want to play something where everyone is "x" toon.

Obnoxious.  And I play one.

Nice.  Can anyone recommend a server for a re-roll?  Gonna start this and go nice and slow if I'm going to do it.  Not looking for a highly populated server.  Middle to lower usually suits me fine.

I've never seen a  double-digit queue on my server (Shu'halo, I've only seen a queue like twice ever), but it's somewhat of a podunk backwater. Not a place to go to if you're looking for a competitive raiding scene.

As a lot of people predicted, the fact that the DKs start at level 55 makes them ideal for rerollers who want to go play with their friends on a new server. So yeah, there are quite a lot of them.

If anyone wants to resub on a US Server, I'd love to send them a "Scroll of Resurrection" (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/scroll/)

And I'd like a Zhevra, if anyone wants to start a new account.  (And I subscribe after my trial.)

I'm still pissed they introduced the zhevra like two weeks after I got my sister to subscribe.  :angryfist:

I've got the Zhevra, it's not all that. Although I gave it to my orc rogue mostly because I fucking hate the crappy running animation of the wolf that they STILL haven't fixed.

They took the 'tail flick' off of the Paladin Charger.    I kinda miss it.

Zebra.  Unicorn.

(Maybe it's a little girl fantasy nostalgia thing.)

No, I totally get that. If it was a proper unicorn I'd be much happier with it.

But it isn't. It's a zebra. With a rhino horn. Considerably less cool.

This thread is now about cool unicorns. Sorry.

All I know is that the first time I saw one in the Barrens, I immediately dumped my pet and tried to tame one.  I was very disappointed.

Why not just get a 2nd account, RAF it and dual-box for a bit, then transfer the 2nd acct char to main acct at 60 and get your zhevra?

RP-PVP = no queue ever. Also no RP and 50/50 as to whether you get ganked or not which makes it exciting and interesting.

Or maybe I'm just lucky

I just canceled my sub.  Got a bunch of good gear, raided a little bit.  Got exalted with a bunch of places.  Don't need any more badge gear or heroic stuff.  Only things I can get that are better are from Naxx etc.  I don't have a guild, went through a few and they all sucked.

The game was incredibly fun and worth playing through.  I got a few months out of it so it's worth the money.

Pretty much the same here. The last patch broke Wintergrasp on my server for a few nights, by the time it was fixed I'd lost interest again. Good fun for a couple months, and I'll likely resub again next time there's a temporary f13 guild going, or another big patch. WoW is fun, just not quite enough fun to keep me playing for long.

Resubbed, downloaded it overnight, patched up in the morning, hopped around on an old character on a server that had about 2-4 people on the zones with quests for my character.  Blah.

Spent a little time trying to find a new server, picked one, logged in, did the first noob quest, stared at the screen for a while, then logged out and started playing FFH (civ mod).   :oh_i_see:

LOL

Me and my friend started a general MMO type of thing.  I just havn't had any motivation to write anything right now.  I will be going to the Comic Con in NYC.  Maybe that'll motivate me to write about my experiences with Champ), Jumpgate and DCUO if I actually get to see em.
