Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke, hands down. I still don't get the Frost/Nixon love. It's a complete reenactment of the TV interview, why not just watch the interview instead? If you want an awesome Nixon watch the Stone flick. Penn already has to many Oscars therefore will not win.
Best Actress: Most probably Kate Winslet but given the academy track record maybe not. Academy will most probably do a Scorsese though and give Winslet an Oscar.
Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger
Supporting Actress: not really a great movie lineup, maybe Tomei

Foreign: Waltz with Bashir, because it's an awesome movie and the competition is worse. Funny how there's basically no competition in either makeup or in visual effects, for there to have been Dark Knight nominations in each category. Because it's pretty basic as far those two categories go.

The plot and narrative in Dark Knight was kind of a mess.  The underlying theme is also pretty apologetic towards violations of civil rights to stop a madman/terrorist,  which is a tough sell for awards consideration.

No, it wasn't apologetic at all, but I think we've covered this ground before in the original Dark Knight thread.

Dark Knight was never going to get nominated for anything other than the technical achievement oscars with the exception of Ledger. As much as I loved it, the direction wasn't that great (Nolan still can't do action) the writing was above average but by no means exceptional (and I also don't think Wall-E should have been nominated either) and the acting was pretty meh.  But the art direction was great and the cinematography was exceptional.  Make-up is Hellboy 2 if there's any justice and sound editing (or sound mixing - whichever one Ben Burtt is up for) has to go to Wall-E.  It has to.

I highly doubt that TDK will get best VFX either but it's possible. Iron Man was stunning in terms of effects and the way they seamlessly blended CGI with practical models. Benjamin Button featured wall-to-wall VFX too from what I gather so I wouldn't be surprised if that won.

Waltz with Bashir will get best Foreign Film. Also surprised that Gomorrah didn't make it but even that wouldn't top Waltz.

Can't say about a lot of the films that have been nominated as they've not been released in the UK yet (Milk, Frost/Nixon out tomorrow, Revolutionary Road out next week, Benjamin Button and Vicky Christina Barcelona the week after that) I do know that the Frost/Nixon film that Jeff can't get a handle on is more than just the interview. It's a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and is all of the interviews that they did and all pretty much done as if it were a boxing film. And hey, it's not like actors haven't won for portraying real people before much is it?

Well Langella has a lot to live up to (for me personally) when I see it. I really liked Anthony Hopkins as Nixon, even though he didn't look a thing like him, nor sounded like him really. The character he played was highly interesting in itself.

He's actually in both, though the way the names are listed I think Sound Editing would be considered his main category:

I love In Bruges, but it has an uphill battle here in the U.S., and Milk won the Best Original Screenplay award at the WGA awards.  I'd rather see Rourke take the Best Actor award, but I think Penn has the advantage.
There's a good chance Wall-E will win Animated, but personally I thought Kung Fu Panda was the better movie.  Of course I'm on good terms with some of the folks from Dreamworks, so I might be a bit biased.

This five-pronged kiss ass method of handing out the acting awards is unbearable.

Yeah, if this ends up being the worst rated Academy Awards ever, it won't be because of the selection of nominees.  The majority of the show has been complete crap.

The biggest highlight for me was Jack Black's "I do a Dreamworks movie, then bet everything on Pixar" joke.  He carried through excellently when they won with a nice fist-pump.

I tried watching for five minutes, and the delay between visual and audio killed it for me. It looked like the presenters and everyone was lip synching.....badly.

I've gotta see Milk and Frost/Nixon, I guess. I usually see most of Penn's movies, but both gay interest and political movies, let alone both, aren't what I rush to see. I love Hopkins' Nixon, so I guess I outright ignored Langella here. Penn was cool for calling out Rourke specifically at the end of his speech.

On a sidenote though, what's kind of sad to me is that he got offered that new role in Iron Man 2, but they were only shelling out $250k, so he might not do it (http://www.superherohype.com/news/ironmannews.php?id=8104). Kind of sad when, say, Charlie Sheen gets a whopping 825k per episode of "Two and Half Men"... among a sea of other ridiculous salaries for shitty stuff.
