Title: Real music that would work in games Post by: Margalis on January 17, 2009, 07:32:48 PM I don't know about other people, but often times when I listen to music I think that certain tracks would work well in games, and even imagine certain scenarios that the music might be attached to. For example a KMFDM or Ministry track that would work in a typical machine/factory level. So I figured I'd make this thread for people to provide clips to music then explain how it would work in a game.
First, I give you two tracks from Dream Theater's "Scenes from a Memory" Starting at 4:10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiACKhmqEhE Starting at 2:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-w3A1KOPZc If you don't hear this music and think of a certain game series something is wrong with you. The second track would be perfect for the Castlevania 4 level that had "Paula Abghul" and "Fred Ascare" as bosses. Bach -> Stravinsky Every guy in between those two you can use as well. Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: trias_e on January 17, 2009, 08:36:08 PM Older Autechre in any quirky or dark sci-fi game would be a no-brainer.

Anything with the snare on every 2nd or 3rd of four beats, with bass drum on each non-snare beat and the high-hat playing on every eighth note in medium tempo works. The most well known example is Kraftwerk's Autobahn, but a better example is Neu!'s Hallo Gallo. But there are modern examples including ones where the tempo picks up which are even better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ9KB5eJ7UE The screaming Finnish vocals means this would be a rally driving game. Also, Circle  Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: stray on January 18, 2009, 10:04:37 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LsViCNZPJs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LsViCNZPJs)
Fugazi - Nightshop.. That 2:35 mark always sounded like some hectic boss fight music to me. Sample it and put it in a Blaster Master remake. Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: stray on January 18, 2009, 10:30:19 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUt3LyjBOkY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUt3LyjBOkY)
Throw this in some platformer too. Heh Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: toywiz on January 18, 2009, 11:01:47 PM Mostly "exploring" music:
Fantasy: Rurouni Kenshin - Alone Again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaNMDY0DlN0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaNMDY0DlN0) Last of the Mohicans Soundtrack - Top of the World, Promentory, Main Theme, & Finale http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWGRnHOhGiE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWGRnHOhGiE) Lord of the Rings Soundtrack - Many Meetings, The Council of Elrond, The Ring Goes South, Lothlorien, and The Great River As far as fantasy exploring music is concerned, I have just about everything Jeremy Soule has created which I got from the actual games or at http://www.directsong.com/ (http://www.directsong.com/) This provides 100+ tracks to play randomly while exploring fantasy worlds once you tire of the original soundtrack which is usually only 45-60min in most games. Space: Orbital - Belfast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HNtsdtnBfk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HNtsdtnBfk) Peter Schilling - Major Tom (Okay kind of silly but I still like to hear it in the mix sometimes. This version is more electronic than the original.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA) Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan - Battle in the Mutara Nebula (pretty cool when this comes on during an Eve space battle.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KilBvojsMdw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KilBvojsMdw) Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENl4JK6LJ0Y (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENl4JK6LJ0Y) Strauss - Blue Danube Waltz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0VUXLsBSjo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0VUXLsBSjo) Thanks for the Autechre suggestion. Good stuff. I envision a 60's Spy/Hip Hop/Ninja game loosely based on Enter the Dragon ( :uhrr:). You're crawling on some ceiling beams in an Asian whorehouse, trying to be concealed. You need to make your way to the end of the building, to slice the Big Boss' throat in secret. Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: Moaner on January 19, 2009, 08:37:28 AM Murcof works with most games. Roguelikes and space games especially.
Autechre sounds good while doing anything. Tri Repetae+ and Quaristice.Quadrange.ep.ae dominate my mp3 player. Solar Fields (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=78433002) - Cocoon Moon is a favorite. I always thought he'd make great game music. Seems DICE agreed with me. (http://www.ultimae.com/en/news/310.html) I have a fake-"official" soundtrack for Asheron's Call 1 that includes a lot of Dead Can Dance and Medieval Baebes, in addition to pieces of the soundtracks from Gladiator, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea. I also have a big swack of songs I've picked out as a soundtrack for my space opera Civ4 mod. I'd have to go home to get a list of them all. Obviously a lot of spacey ambient, though. Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: Nonentity on January 19, 2009, 11:41:25 AM I just want Jeremy Soule (http://www.jeremysoule.com/) to write music for every game. Is that so hard?

Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: stray on January 19, 2009, 07:08:23 PM The worst song for a driving game ever is Drive by The Cars. I'd make some surreal atmospheric racing game that like Wipeout, but paced like a normal racer, and include nothing but Bowie and Bowie like singers. Pablo Picasso (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fXhS6k8Y-I) (yes, yes.. modern lovers.. but bowie's is better for driving) Into the Galaxy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srWd1VFzD0A) Dark Entries (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrlrwoSdyS4) Title: Re: Real music that would work in games Post by: Fabricated on January 19, 2009, 07:26:20 PM Just about everything from Pendulum for action games, if you can get voiceless tracks.
