Title: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: shiznitz on December 29, 2008, 10:43:47 AM
1pt per Wildcard
2pts per Quarterfinal
4pts for Semis
6pts for Super Bowl

Disclosure: I am an unapologetic Eagles fan

Wild Card weekend:
Phi @ Minn - Iggles in a close game.
Atl @ Ari - Atl in a laugher.

Indy @ SD - SD. Manning had his chance. It won't come again.
Bal @ Miami - Bal.

Quarterfinals:
Phi @ NYG - I hate to call this. So many ways for it to go right or wrong. Fuck it: Phi.
Atl @ Car - Car

Bal @ Tenn - Tenn will fail. Bal.
SD @ Pitts - SD. Rothie won't be 100% even if he plays.

Semifinals:
Phi @ Car - I want to say Phi again but the odds of them doing what the Giants did last year is too slim. CAR.
SD @ Bal - Not sure who will be home team but SD will choke. Bal.

Super Bowl:
Car v Bal - A snoozer game. Car: 17-6.

Phi @ Minn - This could go either way. Eagles looked good this weekend, so let's go with them.
Atl @ Ari - This will be a massacre for ATL.

Indy @ SD -Indy. Norv Turner's particpation dooms SD before they even get started.
Bal @ Mia -Baltimore. Defense will shut down MIA.

Quarterfinals:
Phi @ NYG - Giants by at least a TD
Atl @ Car - Panthers in a good game

Indy @ Tenn - Tennessee
Bal @ Pitts - God I hope Baltimore wins, due to my loathing of the Steelers. I don't think Leftwich can get it done against the Ravens' defense.

Semifinals:
Car @ NYG - This should be a good game. Carolina squeaks by as the Giants really mis Plax.
Bal @ Tenn- Defensive battle, probably in bad weather. Tennessee on Bironas's leg.

Super Bowl:
Car v Tenn -I think Carolina has too many weapons for Tennessee to totally stop, and a defense good enough to stop their limited offense. Carolina 24 Tennessee 13

You want us to pick them all up front? Last year we did it week by week.

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions

Phi @ Minn - Eagles, unfortunately.
Atl @ Ari - Turner will run on the Cards all day long. Atl.

Indy @ SD -Indy is looking good.
Bal @ Mia -Baltimore, bleah.

Quarterfinals:
Phi @ NYG - Giants will dominate.
Atl @ Car - Panthers D will be too much for Matt Ryan.

Indy @ Tenn - Tennessee's D
Bal @ Pitts - I'm hoping a large earthquake swallows both teams whole. But if Worthlessberger plays, Steelers.

Semifinals:
Car @ NYG - This should be a good game, but I think the Giants running game will be too much. Gints.
Pitt @ Tenn- Tennesee in low scoring game.

Super Bowl:
NYG v Tenn -I think Tennesee's D and O-line will be enough. Tennessee 24-14

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Ravandor on December 29, 2008, 01:21:40 PM
First off, there's no way for Baltimore to play Pittsburgh in the second round.  If Baltimore wins, they're the lowest seed remaining and go to Tennessee.

Wildcard:
Phi @ Min: Phi - Jackson can't throw
Atl @ Ari: Atl - Wisenhunt's hit the wall
Ind @ SD: Ind - SD's defense isn't good enough
Bal @ Mia: Bal - bloodbath

Divisional Round:
Phi @ NYG: NYG - too much for the Eagles
Atl @ Car: Car - same
Ind @ Pit: Pit - Heinz in January
Bal @ Ten: Bal - defense is too good

Conference Finals:
Car @ NYG: NYG - same as the first time
Bal @ Pit: Pit - Steeler defense vs. Raven's offense is the biggest mismatch

Superbowl:
Pit v NYG: NYG - the defensive line is too much for the Steeler's offensive line to handle

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Draegan on December 29, 2008, 01:23:49 PM
Phi @ Minn - Eagles if Westbrook gets 20+ touches, Vikes otherwise.
Atl @ Ari - Rookie QB in the playoffs?  Maybe.  Atlanta

Indy @ SD - P.Manning will be the MVP.  I think they'll pull it off.
Bal @ Mia - Miami (Don't know why.)

Quarterfinals:
Phi @ NYG - Giants won't lose a 2nd time at home and I'll be at this game!
Atl @ Car - Carolina is tough at home.  They have a veteran team.

Indy @ Tenn - Depends on the weather and health, but I'll take Indy in a close one.
Miami @ Pitt - Hows Big Ben?  Pittsburgh is just the better team though.  Solid Def.

Semifinals:
Car @ NYG - If the Giants are healthy they can take this one again.
Indy @ Pitt - Depends on health again, but I think I'll take Indy in this one since how can you resist the Manning Bowl?

Super Bowl:
NYG vs. Indy - I think McNabb predicted a tie.

Atlanta @ New York - New York
Indy @ Tennessee - Indy
Miami @ Pittburgh - Miami

My first week winners:

Minnesota
Atlanta
Indy
Baltimore (although I expect a close game)

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: HaemishM on December 30, 2008, 11:00:47 AM
Wild Card weekend:
Phi @ Minn - Philly's defense wins them this game. Tavaris Jackson probably loses it.
Atl @ Ari - Atl would have to EPIC FAIL to lose this game.

Indy @ SD - I think San Diego's defense wins them this game.
Bal @ Miami - Baltimore is going to HURT Pennington.

Quarterfinals:
Phi @ NYG - After last year, I'm not betting against the Giants.
Atl @ Car - Playoff experience and Steve Smith win this game for Carolina.

Bal @ Tenn - This is a hard pick, but I think Collins experience will pay off. Score will probably resemble a baseball score.
SD @ Pitts - Rothliesberger's injury and San Diego's hot streak will carry this game.

Semifinals:
Car @ NYG - Carolina learns how to beat the Giants.
SD @ Tenn - Norv Turner-itis will bite them and Tennessee will squeak by.

Super Bowl:
Car v Tenn. - Defense. All defense. Jake the Snake will finally get a Super Bowl ring because their offense will be just that much better.

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Nebu on December 30, 2008, 11:06:50 AM
First round:
Philly @ Minnesota - Phili wins with defense.  Tavaris' head explodes on network tv.
Atlanta @ Arizona - Atlanta.  Doesn't matter... winner here goes nowhere. I call this a revenue game.
Indy @ SD - Indy wins only because they have the last posession.  Whichever QB has the ball last will win the game here.
Baltimore @ Miami - Baltimore.  I love defense.

Second round:
Phili @ Carolina - Carolina.  Too much of a ground game.  Low score, but clock control will win.
Atlanta @ New York - New York
Indy @ Tennessee - Indy.  Peyton knows how to win when it counts.
Baltimore @ Pittburgh - Baltimore.  Pittsburgh will still have a shaken QB.

Conference Championships:
Carolina @ New York - NYG.  Balanced team with a solid leader.  Those Manning boys know how to win the big games.
Indy @ Baltimore - I think the better offense wins.  I go with Indy.

Super Bowl:
Indy vs NYG and the Giants win a fun game to watch.

Wild Card weekend:
Phi @ Minn - Probably won't happen but damn I hate you phily
Atl @ Ari - Turner the burner

Indy @ SD - SD will find a way to screw up
Bal @ Miami - Eh just to be different :P

Quarterfinals:
Minn @ NYG - Yeah giants, fuck
Atl @ Car - Carolina's running game is scary good but I'm going with young underdog Falcons to run the table

Miami @ Tenn - Vince Young continues to pine for days when he mattered as the old guy gets it done
Indy @ Pitts - I hate them but I think they can pull it off, they really want Tenn back

Semifinals:
Atl @ NYG - Young and dumb enough to not be scared says me
Pitts @ Tenn - Close one

Super Bowl:
Atl v Ten - Atl my darkhorse pick

Wild Card Round:

Philadelphia over Minnesota — Eagles most schizophrenic in performance this year, but show up this week to dust off Adrian and his purple comrades
Arizona over Atlanta — Future Hall of Famer MVP QB Kurt Warner leads Cardinals to victory, at least for Round 1 of the playoffs, Falcons just happy to be there

Baltimore over Miami — Ravens D wins this game, /gratz to Miami on comeback from the 1-15 Detroit Lions dead
Indianapolis over San Diego — GotW, SD will hang tough, but Peyton Manning engineers last minute score to advance Colts

If I got someone wrong, let me know.

On to the next round of picks. You must pick all the way now (otherwise there is no reason to have increasing point values).

AFC
BAL @ TEN: BAL - a week off hurts TEN's momentum
SD @ PIT: SD - Ben not himself

NFC
ARI @ CAR: CAR - Panthers won't give the Cards all those turnovers
PHI @ NYG: NYG - I have to pick more than one home team and the Eagles didn't look so hot against MIN.

I don't know the homefield situations for the conference finals. If you do, feel free to keep it to yourself for your advantage or not.

BAL v SD: BAL - Norv Turneritis strikes again
CAR v NYG: CAR - No Plaxico, no Championship repeat.

XLIII
BAL v CAR: BAL in a snoozer

AFC
BAL @ TEN: TEN
SD @ PIT: SD

NFC

CAR v NYG: CAR

XLIII
TEN v CAR: TEN

AFC
BAL @ TEN:  I can't believe I'm picking a team based on Kerry Collins' experience, but yes, that's what I'm doing.
SD @ PIT: If Rothliesberger were healthy, I'd be picking Pitt. But he won't be 100% and their running game has been suspect since Parker's injury. Rivers wins again.

NFC
ARI @ CAR: Arizona gets to play a real defense, and they will lose hard.
PHI @ NYG: The Giants find a way to win this one, probably on defense since the Eagles offense has been horrible.

DIV Finals
TEN v SD: Big time defense will finally shut the Chargers down.
CAR v NYG: The Panthers find a way to beat the Giants.

XLIII
TEN v CAR: Panthers finally take it to the house, Jeff Fisher gets disappointed again.

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Ravandor on January 05, 2009, 08:07:42 AM
AFC
BAL @ TEN: BAL - they want the Steelers again, and I don't know if TEN can stop the run well enough
SD @ PIT: PIT - same type of game as before, but I don't think the Charger defense can play lights out like the last time in PIT

NFC
ARI @ CAR: CAR - it's been a good run for the Cardinals, but seriously, Kurt Warner?
PHI @ NYG: NYG - as always with the Eagles, it depends on which team shows up; this week I think it'll be the Giants

Conference Championships
BAL @ PIT: PIT - both this year's games have had an "unfinished" feeling, hopefully this one ends it
CAR @ NYG: NYG - experience wins out

XLIII
PIT v NYG: NYG - too much defensive line for PIT to handle

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Paelos on January 05, 2009, 08:32:28 AM
AFC
BAL @ TEN: Tennessee - They won't make the same errors that Miami did
SD @ PIT: Pittsburgh - The defense is just too good, and offense just good enough

NFC
ARI @ CAR: Carolina - Cards got lucky last time
PHI @ NYG: New York - If the Vikings hadn't pissed away the game, Philly stood no chance, but the Giants won't do that

Conference Champs
PIT @ TEN: Pittsburgh - with feeling
CAR @ NYG: Carolina - Carolina played them close in the last matchup, and they get the win here

Super Bowl
PIT v CAR: Pittsburgh - all the way

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Nevermore on January 05, 2009, 08:49:04 AM
Well, I can't just drop out now.

AFC
BAL @ TEN: Tennessee - It was all the Miami turnovers that screwed them.  Baltimore's offense wasn't really that impressive and Tennessee has a better defense than the Dolphins.
SD @ PIT: Pittsburgh - Assuming Roethlisberger is 100%

NFC
ARI @ CAR: Carolina - Cardinals are playing on the east coast this time
PHI @ NYG: New York - I didn't watch the Minnesota-Philadelphia game, so I'm just picking the home team here.

Conference Champs
PIT @ TEN: Pittsburgh - similar teams, so I'll go with the better defense.
CAR @ NYG: Carolina - Giants have the better offense, better defense and home field advantage.  I'm taking Carolina on a hunch.

Super Bowl
PIT v CAR: Carolina - great rushing offense vs great rushing defense (and best overall defense).  Pittsburgh's offense is ordinary at best, though.  Panthers in a low scoring game.

AFC
BAL @ TEN: Tennessee in a snoozer...think 13-6 or something horrible.
SD @ PIT: Norv will shit the bed on the road. Pitt, with or without Worthlessburger. 27-13

NFC
ARI @ CAR: Carolina cruises. 37-24
PHI @ NYG: Giants. 24-17

DIV Finals
Pitt v Tenn: Tennessee in another boring grind. 17-13
CAR v NYG: Not again, Eli. Panthers 31-20

DIV PLAYOFF ROUND

PIT over SD — Worthlessburger or not, Steelers ride 'D' to victory
BAL over TEN — A lovely season for the Titans, but Kerry Collins to have flashbacks of his Giant SB year, even if the Raven defensive 2008 edition is a notch below that 2000 crew
NYG over PHI — G-men take the rubber match as schizo Eagle sqaud checks out of the season prematurely
CAR over ARI — Arizona struggled all year in east coast visits, and this week shall be no exception

CONF CHAMPIONSHIPS

PIT over BAL — By a score of 6-5
NYG over CAR — Giants just a better model of the Panthers, if it were any other team, Panthers win

SB XLIII

PIT over NYG — Steelers get payback for blowing the lead over NYG in regular season match, Worthlessburger becomes Betterthanburger, come on, if I picked the Steelers this far, got to go all the way…

SD vs PIT - The Steelers D will contain Stoles and a lackluster LT and pretty much shut down Rivers.  Pitt wins a low scoring game.

BAL vs TEN  - Despite the impressive D against Miami the Ravens aren't really all that.  The Titans are a much more capable team on offense and on defense than Miami.  I'm predicting that the Titans make the Ravens look like chumps who are out of place.

PHI vs NYG - I actually think momentum could carry the Eagles, if they get lucky and force a few turnovers and don't do anything stupid.  However, NY just has to play a reasonably solid game to win and so I have to go with them.

ARI vs CAR -  Hehehe, whatever.

AFC Champions - PIT

NFC Champions - Whoever wins between PHI and NYG, so I'll go with NYG as most likely.

SB XLIII - The NFC champ, NYG.

Depends if the points are awarded if you just needed to correctly pick the winner or if you had to get both teams correct.

E.g. I picked Baltimore to win it all but against Carolina :uhrr:

I'm actually doing well this round assuming the Steelers can win it.

You get points for each correct outcome. If BAL wins the whole thing, then you get the points. The opponent doesn't matter other than the points they could earn for you on their way through.

What a brutal fucking weekend. Every pick I made was fucking wrong, and I'm pretty much out of this little competition. Tennessee I could have seen losing. But Carolina? REALLY? And not just losing but being absolutely DICKSTOMPED. Where the hell was this Arizona running game and defense ALL YEAR LONG? I cannot help but think that they are going to pummel Philadelphia. Let's face it, neither the Giants or the Vikings put up any kind of offense against Philly - maybe that was the defense, maybe it was just that the Vikings O sucks and the Eli Manning regressed about 2 years in one game.

Since San Diego shit the bed, I must now root for Arizona to go all the way. Of course, I don't think that offense can beat either the Ravens or the Steelers' D so it will probably be a boring Super Bowl.

As for Philly fans, they will bitch and whine and complain, and if they are smart (which they are not), they won't run McNabb out of town on a rail. That DeSean Jackson kid is the real deal, and I think McNabb can make him a marquee guy. But the Philly fans have tried to get rid of McNabb for two or three years now. It's not that McNabb is Tom Brady/Peyton Manning quality, but if they get rid of him, there's no heir apparent on the bench, no rookie coming up in the draft I'd expect to come in and pick up where he left off, and I'm not sure there's a good free agent choice out there either.

Kerry Collins showed me that you can squeeze new life out of an old QB with the right players & system.  There may be a replacement for McNabb, but I agree that running him out of Phili would be a major mistake.

The problem with McNabb just seems to be 2 fold: he's injury prone and he seems to get in these awful funks where he's chucking every ball into someone's shoelaces.  Both of those problems will really rankle fickle fans like those in Philly.

Personally, I don't want to see the Eagles win and not just because I live in Arizona.  I'm getting a bit sick of this "one city wins multiple championships" crap we've been getting from Boston. Plus, it'd be really hilarious if the Cards made the Super Bowl.

I didn't crunch all the numbers but I'm pretty sure there's only 3 possibilities left since none of us picked Philly or Arizona to make it to the Super Bowl (i.e. there are no points up for grabs in the NFC title game or if an NFC team wins the SB).

If Baltimore beats Pittsburgh then I win! :drill: cause I have the most points currently of the people who picked Baltimore to make it to the Super Bowl.

If Pittsburgh wins the Super Bowl then naum wins it.

If Pittsburgh loses in the Super Bowl then naum and Rasix tie!

Well, I would think that this will now allow for more Flyers' coverage....but I'm guessing all we will see in the Philly sports media will be a ton of boohoo'ing over the Eagles until training camp.

They might even sack both Reid and McNabb to placate the fans....and then the Real crying will begin when the team blows ass for the next few years.

5 NFC Championship games, 1 SB appearance, generally good records over 10 years....And the two guys who made it happen may very well get the boot for all that hard work.

I cannot wait to hear all the Eagles' fans cry over this.

It's time to evaluate which team is playing better. Pittsburgh is playing solid football, while Arizona just won't be denied.

Buh bye, Eagles! Here's a tissue, McNabb!

HAHAHHAHA! I love it.

Anyways...

The Superbowl... yeesh. My brain says Pittsburgh has the upper hand with a solid D. My heart tells me Arizona has the fire and momentum. Honestly, I'm not sure who is going to win. I want to say Pittsburgh, but there's no way I would bet against Arizona right now. I'm just going to have to watch it and see.

I cannot wait to hear all the Eagles' fans cry over this.

Yes, there will be great lamentations of the women. And if Philly fans are stupid enough to shitcan one or both of Reid and McNabb, they will deserve the fate of the Detroit Lions. McNabb isn't great anymore and he's sure as hell prone to sprained vaginas, but he is the best option they've got. Develop that Desean Jackson kid and get a real running game and keep winning.

Both games were awesome. As for the Super Bowl, I'm picking Pittsburgh all the way. Arizona, as well as they've run the ball, will not be able to run against Pittsburgh. That means they will have to pass. Having an extra week off is going to throw the passing game rhythm off something fierce, and if the Cards don't come out and strike early, they are dead. I'm hoping it will be close, but it's only going to take 2 or 3 hard hits on Warner and he will start rushing throws. I'll be rooting for Arizona, but I don't think they can beat either Pittsburgh or Baltimore.

Title: Re: NFL PLayoff Predictions
Post by: Bungee on January 19, 2009, 10:04:55 AM
Been keeping myself out of that discussion for the course of the playoffs, but regarding the Superbowl: I really think it all depends on that ARZ defense. If they can keep up what they began in january and play solid, disciplined football they will be able to keep it close.

If not, as good as the ARZ passing game might be, no-one wins games against the Steelers D playing one-dimensional. As much as I have credit for that Eagle's D and their pass rush- it's just nothing to what PIT has to offer. Warner was very nervous as soon as Philly brought the heat and he'll see a good load more of that in the SB.

Fitzgerald is a nightmare to cover, but it's not as if Pittsburgh hasn't already shut down Andre Johnson, Randy Moss and T.O. during the season. In fact, I think the Steelers secondary matches up pretty nicely with that 6-handed monster that is the Arizona WR corps. They held their own against some very fierce competition when they had to play without 2 starting CBs for some games during the season and ofc there is that defensive genius by the name of Dick LeBeau.

That said: Here we go, Steelers, here we go! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irWFrU7LjWw

1. I figured Cardinals would prevail (after inconceivably making it to NFC championship after I pegged them to go down to Carolina) considering that (a) Eagles really didn't handle Giants, Giants melted down and (b) Cardinals enjoy a huge homefield advantage — if you've not experienced a game in that terrarium that resembles a stadium, you have no idea how loud and how it reverberates (the roof is retractable but Whisenhunt will never allow it to open, believing it to be a huge advantage for Cardinals)… …Cardinals will not enjoy a homefield advantage in Tampa and likely it will be a decidedly Steeler fan majority.

2. Still, Eagles had numerous opportunities to claim victory — even after exchanging FG for TD early on. Missed XP, missed FG, other lost opportunities, still they lost by only one score. My assessment is that the Cardinals really didn't outplay Eagles, Eagels kind of beat themselves, although Cardinals made certain they did not give game away and executed in the 4th quarter (namely, the 4th down conversion that sealed the deal).

3. Either Pittsburgh or Baltimore will pulverize the Cardinals. At least 8 or 9 times out of 10 games played. But it's only one game, so it is by no means a certain outcome.

4. Steelers have nobody that can cover Larry Fitzgerald (I don't think there are but a handful of NFL CB/DB who can). If Cardinals can hit some big plays and snooker Steelers with the trick plays (the same ones Cardinal coach used to power Steelers O in their 2005 SB run), they are capable of beating the Steelers.

5. But OTOH, Steelers D is really peaking at what has been a remarkable season. I'm still in state of glazed astonishment about how Polamalu was so gimpy he couldn't even run at half speed (according to CBS Simms/Nance), yet he was all over the field. Pittsburgh got sufficient pressure on Flacco without resorting to many full out blitzes, we shall see how Arizona O-line, much improved and steady, performs against Pittsburgh front 7, which will be a bigger barometer that Fitzgerald and double teams.

6. Steeler special teams are pathetic outside the threat of Holmes to return a TD (though he's a fumble liability too, and why he does not return as many kicks) and Reed reliability on <45 FG attempts. It nearly cost them dearly.

7. The matchup is really personal for Wisenhunt, something that even NFL channel Sanders is already stirring up — he was not happy about not getting the Steeler spot, believed it was his to inherit, and he's really licking his chops and showing his old management what a mistake they made. And he knows the Steeler personnel well, as the Steeler players no doubt are aware of his likes and tendencies.

8. Bill Cowher had lots of success getting to AFC championship game, but little success winning them, especially home games - losses in 94, 97, 01, 04. Won in 95 (lost SB XXX to Cowboys) and finally in 05 won it all as #6 seed. Most of those games are games they should have won where Cowher went too conservative in 2nd half and got outcoached. Tomlin OTOH seems to be better at making 2nd half adjustments, as witnessed by incredible 3rd quarter performance of Steelers in regular season and playoffs.

9. Willie Parker going to have better success against Cardinals than Ravens. He not going to go off either, as Cardinals D play has been fairly good, but I think he tallies a 100 yard game with one big run.

I want the Cards to win. I usually prefer the NFC team for no rational reason. However, the Cards strike me as particularly susceptible to the pressure and hype of the moment. Pittsburgh is better suited to grinding it out.  In the end, with the Eagles out my wife is off the hook for a party so it will be a quiet night this year.

Lots of Cardinal fans crawling out of the stucco now, and I've been getting razzed for my unwavering Steeler devotion… …yep, the bandwagon is packed with people now, most who paid the Cardinals no mind whatsoever until the recent playoff success…

Will throw a few suggestions out, but it might be helpful to know what part of the Phoenix metro area, as you can travel from one part of the Phoenix area to another for 50+ miles and still be in the metro-area…

* Max's sports bar in Glendale AZ
* McDuffy's or Fox & Hound in Peoria AZ
* Arizona Center, downtown Phoenix
* Goldies Sports Bar (good eatin' here)  in Scottsdale AZ
* Uncle Sams (lots of TVs but no big screens but closest thing you'll get to a Philly cheese steak in Arizona)
