Title: Is your grief strong?
Post by: doubleplus on November 22, 2004, 04:48:11 PM
As my inner fanboy is screaming after Haemish's PK review, I was cruising the pk warcry site and noticed a competition they're offering.

http://pk.warcry.com/index.php/content/griefer/wgg.php

Fill it out, win $5,000. I think it's warcry's first contest for actual prize money. Interesting to see them try it with such a small population reading the pk site.

Nokia or Sega, yeah. Or Best Buy trying to interest some "good" customers.

Or none of the 3.

That would be a cool contest if it were run like George Carlin's ultimate sport: put all the griefers in an arena with some meth and baseball bats and let them beat the living hell out of each other until one man stands. Then shoot that man. Winner: everyone else.

Didn't Shadowbane try this whole appeal to griefers tactic? Didn't they drop it after a while?

Read the lore of Pocket Kingdom. The final NPC is an exiled griefer. Humor++

A real griefer would DDOS the website so no one else would know about the contest and win by default.

Or hack into the database to see how they plan on scoring the first round.

That's cheating, not griefing.

A hardcore griefer would hack the server in order to change the questions to embarassing personal questions and then mass mail them to nuns throughout the country.

It's using cheating to grief. I'd say it's metagriefing, if you want to split hairs ;)

The type of game it is, I don't think they'll have too much trouble getting away with appealing to whoever the hell they want.

When you're trying to put forth a more traditional MMORPG, griefers can cause all kinds of various trouble. They've got a pretty open world, a keyboard, and, sometimes, knowledge about the magic box they're playing on. The way this game is, I'm not sure a griefer would be all too effective. You can PK my castle, which is sort of the point, or, uh, I guess you can try to haxxor my n-gage and put a big goatsecx on the screen. I really don't think the latter will be too much of a problem.

Besides, this is the first time they've released a MMOG for any handheld system, that I know of. I think the trick is to make mistakes while grabbing up as many people as possible, then work out the kinks later.

Problem is they did not screw up too bad. I hear it is a lot of fun so far.

Yeah, total blast so far. Haemish was spot-on, as usual. The interface holds it back to a painful degree, but it just means standing in line at WalMark will occasionally mean selling stuff for phat loots rather than pwning some random griefer.

Oh, I agree. Not a bad little game at all. That's not necessarily what I was referring to.

How much play time have you logged? I'm about to get out of the single player area an into the arena. I wish to pwn you.

Jesus, you just now got KOTOR? See you in six years when you play Bloodlines (which is better than KOTOR, amazingly).

No shit eh?

WELL HERE'S MY KOTOR REVIEW.

jk.

It's good, but it's not really what I expected. Anyone play Jedi Power Battles for PS1? I sort of expected a beefed out version of that. This is like... different, dude.

It was sort of just there when I got my Xbox, and it was a "platinum hit" for 24.99 or whatever. Seeing as most other "platinum hits" are shit like Crash Bandicoot or what the fuck ever, this seemed like a good idea. It was. I intend to buy #2 when it comes out here in a little while.

Nm. Game was short and the ending was goofy as hell.

Make that game about ten times longer and tack on a proper ending, or even multiple endings, and you've got *OMG GAME OF THE YEAR*.

Er, well. I guess games are lame enough nowadays that KOTOR probably is the game of the year.

Let's go back to 2D so we can get some fucking length in our games.

I prefer games be rental length. $3 for 20 hours is a lot better than $50 for 60 hours. But that's just me.

Nobody told me it was rental length. I assumed otherwise.

I suppose I really shouldn't in this day and age, but I think I've got very oldschool expectations of RPGs.

I'd rather it be short and fun rather than long and a grind. But I hated every Final Fantasy after the first one.
