Title: New cell, not iPhone, AT&T's selection sucks...
Post by: Hoax on December 14, 2008, 09:47:56 AM
I need a new phone, I have one of those Sony Ericsson W580i's, which btw is a pos phone.  I mean there is some good, but the fugly huge proprietary jack and the stupid proprietary headphones & memory card make me want to kill Sony.  What else is new.  Its at the end of its lifespan.

So I'm on AT&T, until Verizon gets an Android phone, I'm not even thinking of switching.  I don't mind signing the 2-yr to get a good price.  Might be my last contract renewal but whatever.

I don't want a fucking iPhone, I hate them, I hate apple, but AT&T has been hell bent on selling me one since it came out.  I need a QWERTY keyboard in the worst way though, fucking texting is unavoidable these days.

So I've got two options which is two more then I had 5 months ago.

The Pantech Matrix ($130 w/ $50 MIR) (http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=Pantech+Matrix+-+Navy+Blue&q_sku=sku3020343)
Which is the improved duo, which was basically the phone they did for Helio but different.  The duo scored well with wired for what that's worth. (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/10/review-pantech-.html)

or

The HTC Fuze ($350 w/ $50 MIR) (http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-details/?device=HTC+FUZE(TM)&q_sku=sku3090226)
Which from some quick google searches seems to be a phone that some people were looking forward too.  Its way too fucking expensive I think, but it does look slick.

So anyone know anyone with either of these?  Or have a phone review site they trust?  All of them seem so bootleg and who fucking cares what CNET thinks about anything amirite?

TIA.

After having 2 WinMo phones for a good while and switching to Android, I suggest you tough it out and wait for Android. Sorry pal, phones in the US suck.

Just get a Blackberry Bold.

I disagree in general about AT&T's phones sucking though. They have a nicer selection than everyone else. Sprint's is pretty abysmal for a company that large. T-Mobile has some cool things, I guess, but not better than AT&T as a whole.

I know some of the hardware looks interesting, but avoid Windows Mobile devices if you plan on reading and writing a lot of SMS's or emails.  I really wanted to love my last HTC, but after two hardware exchanges, I gave up.

If you really hate iPhones, go with a Blackberry.  Not sure about the Bold, but the 88xx and 83xx series units were quite good based on my brief experiences with them.

I'm wondering now if he even wants a smartphone. Maybe that Pantech is the right choice, if you just want something basic and with a slideout. And don't want another Sony.

Always check Amazon prices first. They have the HTC Fuze for $174.99. What about the HTC Tilt (http://www.amazon.com/AT-T-Tilt-Smartphone/dp/B000UWDU5K/)? Free after rebate.
