Title: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 25, 2008, 05:55:23 PM I have no idea what the fuck happened, everything was working fine last night, and now, not.
When I launch the eve .exe the splash page loads, and then nothing. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted all files and copied mokis working eve directory over, same thing. Splash screen and then nothing. exefile.exe runs another copy of itself every time I launch eve, but the game itself isn't loading or showing on programs. What the fuck? Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Jayce on November 25, 2008, 06:08:52 PM There's a safemode, have you tried that?
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 25, 2008, 06:09:40 PM Yeah, same thing, I found a thread on eve-o about it, but the solution of hitting alt-enter does jack and shit.
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Grand Design on November 25, 2008, 06:28:35 PM Obvious questions:
Have you installed anything at all since the last time it worked? Do other programs work? Try many. Do you trust your father and is it possible that he's stolen all of your stuff and pulled a capacitor from your video card? Other than that, have you run a full chkdsk? A bad sector could cause problems even after a reinstall. Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 25, 2008, 06:32:12 PM No.
All of them. *glares behind me* doubtful Running chkdsk now. Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 25, 2008, 07:42:45 PM Copied mokis directory again and now everything works.
*checks assets* Yep, all good. Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: lac on November 25, 2008, 11:22:37 PM If stuff started working again after a chkdsk, you might want to make sure you have a full backup of that disk because it might be going tits up soon.
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 25, 2008, 11:25:53 PM No, it wasn't the chkdsk, it started working again after I deleted my eve directory and copied Moki's over to my own. I ended up doing the same thing on patch day, too. I kept getting some error and it wouldn't let me patch, copied over the old mans and it all worked fine.
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Reg on November 25, 2008, 11:55:26 PM That sounds an awful lot like a corrupted file caused by a bad sector to me. You should do a full disk scan and repair just to make sure.
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: 5150 on November 26, 2008, 12:40:34 AM I think I know what's wrong, occasionally a file in your cache will become corrupt and prevent eve from launching. Quickest way to get round it is rename the cache folder but you'll lose alot of settings doing that.
I'm at work now so can't be exact but the path to the files is something like .... C:\documents and settings\{login name}\local settings\ccp\eve It's usually only 1 file (date of which is probably last [successful] login) once identified you may want to keep a backup of it for future use. Another way around it is to download and use eve launcher but again you'll lose your settings /edit - Damn you iPhone keyboard and spell checker Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Predator Irl on November 26, 2008, 03:43:02 AM Have you installed any windows updates lately that may have caused it? For example a graphics card driver? If so, do a rollback.
If not, see if there is an update that you could apply. Also, it may not be a bad idea to run a system file checker. Open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow. Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Jayce on November 26, 2008, 07:00:59 AM From your OP it looks like your second copy of the eve folder was successful. What if the first copy landed on the bad sector?
Try the same thing twice and it only works the second time is always sort of :uhrr: Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: Nerf on November 26, 2008, 11:19:41 AM I wasn't copying the latest updated folder when it didn't work the first time, I was copying over the one from QR patch day. I'll check the hard drive though, just to be sure.
Title: Re: Eve broken- halp! Post by: 5150 on November 26, 2008, 12:26:32 PM Just in case its relevant the path to the file I mentioned earlier is:
C:\Documents and Settings\{login name}\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\settings The file (in my case) was one of the .DAT files (PC.DAT I think) |
