I distinctly remember as a 7 year old all of the naughty jokes we'd make from the Hot-N-Juicy slogan.  Damn, but we were clever.

Are you telling me that you weren't exposed to several years of the Wendy's "Where's the beef?" commercials? Damn man, that old lady (Clara Peller) was famous - people mourned when she died.

Ok, after checking, I have realized that Schild was about four when they came out, but still...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug75diEyiA0)

Wendy's chicken burgers are actually among the best fastfood one's I've had.

Of all the fast-food options I tried when I lived in the US, Wendy's was by far the nicest.

I worked at Wendy's for about six years through college, etc.

I have an extremely clear understanding of their food prep methods and goals.

I still eat at Wendy's on a regular basis. Their food is clean, healthy, and the worst they can do to screw it up is to over cook your burger.

I worked at Burger King for two months in high school.

I avoid eating at BK at all costs.

YMMV but Wendy's is actually well made fast food. The spicy chicken kicks some serious ass, and I can go in today and get a double stack combo and a spicy chicken wrap for less than $5 in San Diego and be full. They have good prices if you shop smart. Their sides instead of fries menu allows folks to inject all kinds of healthy stuff into the option, and it tastes good.

If you prefer McDonald's or BK over Wendy's when it comes to burgers and chicken, you have just developed a taste for overly processed foods.

Bonus Trivia: Want your food very fresh and have a little extra time? Order your food "no salt" instead of normal. If you do this the crew will put down a fresh burger and order of fries when you order it (so you have to wait) and serve it without seasoning. Which means it comes to you right off the grill with fries still hot from their trip through the oil. Beef without salt is a crime, so you can salt it yourself -- but this will guarantee very fresh food.

I have not heard of it, but there are chains here that are North, south, east, and west type of thing. My comments was really about the big 5, Wendy's is the best.

I had a very similar experience. The only major difference is my other job was McDonald's. I still eat there but there are some things I don't get from them anymore.

But yes, Wendy's is pretty much the best fast food, both in taste and preparation methods.

Seriously, there's the spicy chicken sandwich, and then there's everything else in fast food.  Nothing I've had compares.  I suppose Carl Jr's is ok as well for big greasy burgers, but I usually feel funky after eating one.  I don't ever feel bad after eating a spicy chicken.   I am addicted to sodium though, so I'll admit the 6 dollar western bacon cheeseburger also holds a place in my heart.

My ex worked at Wendy's for years, it's one of the few places (and only fast food place) I've seen behind the scenes and continue to eat. As a corporation, they have their shit wired pretty well, the whole fresh burger chain works pretty nice. Though you are at the mercy of drudge-wage workers, so if the local manager sucks, results may vary. Our local unit was really, really good for about ten years but it's very uneven right now due to mismanagement. Still the only fast food place, excepting pizzerias, I frequent.

We just officially shunned Appleby's after way too many bad experiences there. Learn how to cook vegetables, for fuck's sake. Unfortunately, the rest of my town loves the place and it's in no danger of closing, the most popular place in town :| We do have one smaller place that was bought out by the chef, hostess and general manager a few years ago. They're doing these great seasonal menus and it's usually a good wait to get in, so there is some hope.

Turns out it's strictly a Canadian chain. Number 4 behind the big internationals (Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King).

Their burgers are still the best though.

Appleby's has been known as "Crappleby's" to me for a while now.  I will not eat there again, ever. Their food is disgusting. Chilli's is well on its way to getting there too.

There's a Wendy's down the street, and I eat there at least 3 times a week for lunch or dinner. I know it's bad, but it's pretty much the only fast food I can stand. And damn, their chicken sandwiches are good.

I'm really happy that they offer iced tea over soda now. I get unsweetened tea and feel even less bad about eating there than I did when I drank soda.

I lot of the Wendy's here are half Wendy's/half Tim Hortons, which is AWWWWESOME. Wendy's is pretty much the only fast food I'll eat.

That's because Wendy's bought Tim Horton's a while back.  They've since sold them off again but those double stores never shared staff so there was no reason to change them.

The Wendy's value menu is bad ass. I am disappointed that they lowered the amount of nuggets in the .99 version from 5 to 4. They snuck that one in on me when I wasn't paying attention, so I'll probably remove that item from my rotation. Still...

Double Stack
Value Fries
Caesar Side Salad
Value Frosty

All for less than $5. Winna!

Living in Columbus, we have Wendy's on every block.  It really is the best of the fast foods, although Chick-fil-A is rated as healthier overall.  A fuck of a lot more expensive than Wendy's, though.  That said, the quality has dropped considerably since Dave Thomas died.  It's gotten better in the past year or so, but from 2003-2006 it was shit here in town.

Funny Wendy's story... when I was 15 or so, living in Toledo, Ohio, my dad took me to Wendy's and we got cold fries that were only half full.  He went up to exchange them and the manager said no... fucking unbelievable.  She said they were warm and full when she put them in the bag.  So after getting pissed off, he sits back down with his back to the registers and starts lobbing cold french fries over his shoulder, hitting patrons and employees.  One by one, fry after fry.  Amazingly, they never asked us to leave.  I think they were afraid of him he was so pissed off.  I don't think he's ever been back to a Wendy's since.

I liked BK's burgers the best.  Wendy's spicy chicken is amazing though.  I strip off the bun and suffer through the breading when my friends want to eat there.  Damn good even if I shouldn't have any.

I can count the number of times I eat fast food in a year on one hand these days, but when I do it's Wendy's.  For fast food, it's tasty stuff.

When I lived in California and was younger and poorer, I learned three things:  In and Out had a very limited menu but what they made was quite good; Carl's Jr. had the best 'I shouldn't be eating this but it's too good to stop' burgers; and Jack-in-the-Box serves toxic waste, not food.

On a not-really-fast-food note, I used to *love* Baja Fresh when I lived in Long Beach.  There's a few in Florida now, but none in Central Florida.

If we have any choice about it, we do Wendy's when we're travelling (the only time we eat fast food ever). It tastes more like real food. I like the fact that you can get something other than a hamburger as well. I'm quite fond of the chili.

Wendy's is awesome but greasy. Best burgers from a national chain next to Steak N' Shake. In-And-Out is still the best burger I've ever had, but it's limited to the west coast, argh.

Title: Re: Wendy's
Post by: trias_e on November 19, 2008, 09:16:16 PM
In-And-Out is certainly awesome, but if you are on the east coast you may have access to five guys burgers...which is absolutely fantastic.  My quality of burger life increased immensely when a five guys was opened in salt lake.

Everytime I ever take a road trip westish, in-and-out is the alpha and omega of our destinations.

It doesn't get better than Whataburger for a fast food burger. They also have this really really addictive ketchup that comes in these little tubs. That stuff was sent from some higher power. It's just too damn tasty. Regular ketchup can suck it.

Wendy's is really good though. I get the triple and a frosty. I'm a fatass.  :awesome_for_real:

I know for a fact that when I was in London in 1994 I had 1 meal at a Wendy's, everything was the same as in the US except for the mustard, I was used to the old mild mustard you get, in the UK they used a spicy HOT mustard. I was glad to have the frosty.

Austin has so many monster amazing burgers (Dan's, Phil's, Casino El Camino), I can't see a reason to eat fast food ever again. Of course, since I finished my diet I can't remember the last time I ate fast food - but I do remember it was all CJs, In-and-Out or Whataburger near the end. I have immense disdain for wendys (everything including the fries taste soggy), McDs, or BK. When I was at GoDaddy on the east side, I'd eat Sonic because it was right outside.

Whataburger is delicious when warm and fresh.  Somehow the warmth drains from their food in about thirty seconds though.  It boggles me they could engineer a material with so tiny a heat capacity.  If it could be liquified it'd make the best thermal paste ever.

There used to be a Wendy's in Shaftersbury Avenue in London but I'm pretty sure it's now closed. The fact that they served real mustard at all intrigues me though, McD's and BK only ever serve the American stuff that's just a little, sour I guess? Just tastes like someone dumped some weird processed yellow shit onto my food not mustard.

Oh my... I love fast food. I really do.

That's why it always breaks my heart when you guys start a threat about that dozen fast food chains you come to choose from over there... I get, well McD, BK and KFC...

I rarely go to McD even though it's just 1 minute away ( I can't stand their burgers at all, except for the Big Tasty and its cousins), I get to eat a good old Whopper like once every 3 months because the BK is that far away, and I only eat KFC stuff because it's just a darn good fit for watching football every other week (30 hot wings bucket ftw).

Oh, I think the local Kebap Mafia counts towards fast food as well...
Well, don't get me startet...

I want a freaking Subways or a Wendy's or just a plain good fast food restaurant near me FFS!!  :heartbreak:

Since I now live in Manchester I can happily say I would choose the kebabs on the curry mile over any fast food restaurant any day of the week. That said I'm not a huge fan of most fast food places, KFC being the best of the big three we actually have in the UK. I no likee Subway.

Title: Re: Wendy's
Post by: apocrypha on November 20, 2008, 03:31:38 AM
KFC is about the only UK fast food I can cope with too, and then very rarely. I don't know if it's because they're all franchises or what but they seem to be very variable. There's a KFC near us that we know now to just not bother with - really slow service, dirty restaurant, food badly prepared. When the KFC urge takes over us we drive about 6 miles to a different one instead that's so much better it's hard to believe they're the same thing.

There used to be a great mini-chain in Brighton called Uncle Sams that did awesome chilli burgers, but I think they've all shut down now (there was only 3 I think).

I eat KFC once a year, because the day after I remember why the fuck I avoid ingesting shit like this. It takes me three hundred sixty-four days to forget what happened, decide that I want to try KFC's fried chicken breasts, order an all white meat bucket and start the cycle all over again.

 :awesome_for_real:

Also, when traveling in fly-over country in the US I stop at Wendy's and order their tex-mex (I think that is what it is called) chicken salad with chili.  Not haute cuisine, but I have yet to get sick and it tastes pretty darn good, gosh darn'it.

My fiancee does the same thing, though she'll eat some of the bun but pick off most of the breading.

She likes French's yellow mustard. It sits like an abomination in my fridge, as my Nathan's (my equivalent of yellow) and Hoffman's (my favorite german mustard) look on disdainfully.

There's an Arby's in Virginia that's a concept Arbys, the quality of food is better, there's a second burrito place in side called "Barbacoa", the decor is pretty fucking fantastic for a fast food joint - we're talking way better than average, and you can order wine and beer, and actual human beings bring everything to your table. See... that's not a fast food joint.  That's a regular restaurant with Arby's branding.  I'm talking about shuffling through a line, ordering a number 4 with a Molsen or a McWine like you were at any other fast food joint, except somehow instead of a Diabetic-sized soft drink you get beer.

I did go to a La Belle Province in Montreal:  basically a hot dog joint.  They had poutine, hot dogs with vinegar cole slow, and michigan hot dogs.  I love to have poutine about twice a year,  even if I feel like my chest is seizing up the rest of the day.

I had a beer at a BK with a Whopper Combo when I was in Barcelona last year (after 2 weeks of hamon serrano breakfast, lunch and dinner I needed a break).  It's pretty much only in the US where you can't get an alcoholic drink at, at least some of, the fast food restaurants.

Beer at a fast food place sounds like a strictly Quebec thing. The rest of Canada is way too uptight to allow that sort of behaviour. Sheesh, it wasn't that long ago that you had to order food in a restaurant before you could buy a drink and bars had to close by 9pm on Sundays here in festive Ontario.

I've been horribly spoiled as far as burgers are concerned.  There's an up-scale deli place I eat at regularly that makes a hamburger from freshly ground beef, pork and veal,  well seasoned,  and perfectly cooked.

I really like the Clinton Corner Cafe (21st/SE Clinton). Slow Bar on Grand/Morrison is pretty good too. And the kobe sliders at the Rogue Brewery in the Brewery Blocks downtown are outstanding.

I have heard horror stories from a friend who worked there in high school about having to disassemble and clean the "clogged" Frosty machine to only find out what it was clogged with.

That makes no sense. The frosty machine is a horizontal tube with a screw/blade running through the center of it. The screw turns to keep the frosty mix from freezing completely and dispenses it on the end. Like any soft serve machine. The machine is emptied, cleaned, and sanitized nightly by policy.

Even assuming the worst and a store that skipped that step, there wouldn't be a place for the fly to lay eggs in comfort, the inside is hard to get into, and is constantly moving. Plus the machine has to be refilled more than once a day, even on slow days. I call bullshit on this one, the sheer number of failures involved in having the machine sit in a manner that a fly could lay eggs that would then hatch into maggots is too high to be likely.

I did watch a dragonfly dive bomb the french fry machine and lose to the hot oil, and all we did was turn it off and clean it later that night (no more food was cooked), that was funny.

Other normal fast food horrors abound I'm sure, but that's a topic for another thread entirely.  :uhrr:

All this talk of fast food isn't making me desire any for some reason.  I last had Burger King regularly in 2000 I think - they did something to their recipe at the one in the town I was living in and the management changed for the worse, so I stopped eating there.  Jack In The Box is the only place out here that I have frequented, and usually only because someone else was buying or it was the only choice.  It's been... at least 8-9 months since I can recall eating any fast food.  Sonic is the only place I really miss, and that's more for the drinks.  The burgers were always hit or miss - either really good, or REALLY bad.

Maggots in the food is a myth that loves to get perpetuated.  A Grillz went out of business in my youth because someone claimed to have found live ones in their burger, yet it was just a hoax like the Wendy's finger-chili.  And a tasty burrito company suffered the same fate in another town for the same reason 10 years later.

I last had a McDonald's in Egypt this summer. Last chain fast food I had was probably about 3 years before that (I had a McArabia, Kofta with flatbread it's probably the tastiest thing I've ever had in a McDonald's as in it had actual herbs in it).

It _is_ fast food, but it's like fast food as seen in Demolition Man. Or at least I think I'm thinking of the right movie.

Taco Bell was a 5 star restaurant in that movie.

Also, I'm not getting the A&W love, the 2 nearest to me are disgusting shit. On level with cafeteria food.

Temperatures would also be too low to allow any insect egg to grow and pop.

Either way, quite a few maggots are perfectly edible.

If it comes down to a choice between extra maggots or melamine in my frosty to increase its protein levels, I will gladly go for extra maggots.

This was in the 90s, in Oregon City. I'm just going off what she said.

Jack in the Box eggrolls are cool. If it's 3:00 AM, and you have a hankering for eggrolls.

I've worked at a lot of restaurants. My favorite maggot story was from one hot summer working at a big country dinner theater. We were running the day's garbage out to the long, construction-style dumpster. It had just been emptied, but apparently not very well. There was a one foot soup of organic liquid waste and maggots in the bottom. Most maggots I've ever seen in one spot. Wish I'd have had a camera.

I know they are sick.  They are made from horribly poor, if not downright spoiled, ingredients.  They look gross.  They do not resemble their source material in either taste, appearance or style.  And yet, I would donate my liver for a few Jack in the Box SUPER TACOS.  Christ, but they are awesome.

The last time I lived anywhere near a Jack-In-The-Box they had these retarded breakfast sandwiches.  I think they had three layers of egg and meat and cheese with some kind of extra-goey sauce on them.

Eating one of those was an instant way to ruin your morning with indigestion.

The only way to explain the continued success of Jack-in-the-Box is they must be using tomacco in their recipes.

My bet is that the secret sauce contains crack.  I used to love me some White Castle back in the day... but that was usually at 4am after a gig.  I think I loved messing with the other patrons more than eating the food now that I look back.

That's what Denny's is for.

Gods was that fun back in college.  We were regulars and tipped well, so the servers liked us, but I'm sure we annoyed/freaked the other patrons out.  I almost miss those days.
