Title: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Soln on November 17, 2008, 07:41:43 PM name it, explain why
Edit: note I say" favourite", not" best" //-------------------------------// On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064757/) Most beautiful (and most talented) Bond Girl: Diana Rigg (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001671/) Best theme: it is (no poor vocals) Best story: Bond's an assassin, gets married, becomes a widower, Novel link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Her_Majesty%27s_Secret_Service_(novel)) Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Viin on November 17, 2008, 08:06:05 PM Well you spelled Favorite wrong, so I don't even know what to say ....
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Soln on November 17, 2008, 08:14:09 PM its British spelling like "honour"... come on, seriously
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Viin on November 17, 2008, 08:18:20 PM Also wrong! I'm just teasing :sad_panda:
My favorite is Goldfinger, mostly because it was the first Bond film I saw. Plus the most risque name of the 60's: Pussy Galore! (http://www.virginmedia.com/images/1bondgirl-gal-pussy.jpg) (hotlinked and loving it) Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: apocrypha on November 17, 2008, 11:12:46 PM Dr No.
They never got better than that IMO. It was funny and camp without overdoing it and it still had a touch of gritty darkness to it that stopped it being just a kids film. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Azaroth on November 18, 2008, 12:29:45 AM Isn't it more fun to talk about BAD Bond movies?
I mean, come on. Die Another Day wasn't only the worst Bond movie I've ever seen, but it was one of the worst movies OF ALL TIME. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: DraconianOne on November 18, 2008, 04:14:13 AM The only thing I like about Die Another Day was the hovercraft chase at the beginning and the only reason for that is because they filmed it in Aldershot at a place where they also hold a race called the Grim Challenge which is very wet, very muddy and very cold (first year was an icebreaker in January) and also a lot of fun.
(http://farm1.static.flickr.com/29/56268688_acb132198f.jpg) Other than that it's diabollically bad. My favourite Bond film, however, is more difficult. Of the Moore era it was "Live and Let Die" because of the boat scene, the voodoo vibe and the classic theme tune. Of the Connery era I'm going to say You Only Live Twice because it's got Donald Pleasance playing Blofeld. Other than that, I'm about the only person on the planet who really likes License to Kill because - I don't know - probably fancied Carey Lowell or something. Or maybe it's because it reminds me of the summer of 1989 which was quite probably one of the best summers I ever, ever had. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Cyrrex on November 18, 2008, 05:13:58 AM Octopussy and Never Say Never - and I think mostly because of how old I was when I say them and the fact that they are the only two Bond films I ever saw in the theater...I.e. I was fairly young and they were pretty damn exciting at the time.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Bunk on November 18, 2008, 06:13:44 AM From Russia with Love. Classic Connery, Robert Shaw, Rosa Klebb and her shoe dagger. It felt more on the line of the Flemming novels than the silly later stuff.
As for the newer movies, I'll admit to loving Goldeneye. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Jeff Kelly on November 18, 2008, 06:31:46 AM I'd select one for each era.
Connery era: I'd go with Goldfinger because it's the first one which got the formula exactly right although Thunderball is also great. I really like on her majesty's secret service with Lazenby because it provides a backstory to Bond and adds some drama and emotion to the series. I never was that much into Moore's interpretation of Bond but I liked Live and let die. I can't say anything about Dalton's Bond because I never watched his movies. My favorite Brosnan Bond is 'The world is not enough' Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Signe on November 18, 2008, 06:49:40 AM I don't remember the name but it's the one where they ski down the hills for a bit while people shoot at them and they drive off the side of the road and the car explodes and they jump out of an airplane and some pretty girl is killed at some point. That one.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Classic Connery, Robert Shaw, Rosa Klebb and her shoe dagger. It felt more on the line of the Flemming novels than the silly later stuff. From Russia with Love is my favorite. Well paced, detailed plot, people doing things for reasons you can understand, etc... This one is followed, in no particular order, with Goldfinger, Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and then the Daniel Craigs. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Johny Cee on November 18, 2008, 10:25:29 AM I love Goldfinger, even if it was the pattern on which all the shlocky Bond movies were based. "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"
From Russia with Love and Dr. No are both more classic spy movies. Both great. Bond in Dr. No is about three parts manipulative asshole. As ridiculous as they are, I'll watch The Spy Who Loved Me and Live and Let Die if they're on. The Dalton movies are still better than the Brosnan movies except for Goldeneye. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: HaemishM on November 18, 2008, 12:01:56 PM The only Brosnan Bond worth it is the World is Not Enough, for no reason other than Michelle Yeoh. For classic Bond, I'm thinking Dr. No and Goldfinger and for Roger Moore movies Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me are probably the only decent ones. Though I did love Moonraker for the Pew Pew Lazers, and always dug the Jaws character.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Paelos on November 18, 2008, 03:01:09 PM Thunderball
Goldeneye Casino Royale Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Ingmar on November 18, 2008, 03:19:47 PM GooooooooooooldFINGAH.
Best movie, *and* best theme song. Shirley Bassey > *. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Trippy on November 18, 2008, 03:28:02 PM The Spy Who Loved Me
I had seen bits and pieces of some of the other Bond movies on TV but this was the first one I saw in the theaters as a kid. Obviously it was the most awesome movie I had ever seen besides Star Wars (underwater Lotus Espirit for teh win!). Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: trotski on November 18, 2008, 03:47:56 PM Goldfinger
From Russia With Love Live and Let Die GoldenEye Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Kail on November 18, 2008, 03:53:26 PM The Living Daylights.
The downhill skiiing fight in the cello case clinches it for me. Plus, it gets points for having other 00 agents in it. I also liked most of the Brosnan ones, largely because the effects were way nicer. The only one I really can't stand is Live and Let Die. It just really doesn't click for me. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: K9 on November 18, 2008, 04:08:08 PM The only Brosnan Bond worth it is the World is Not Enough, for no reason other than Michelle Yeoh. Wat? Goldeneye is a far better film on multiple levels. I don't know what my all-time favourite is, I have a real soft spot for Moonraker because that's the one I'd watch if I was sick and missing school way back when. Goldeneye, Casino Royale, Goldfinger and the Living Daylights I also love. The living daylights being also sweetly ironic nowadays. Quote from: Ingmar GooooooooooooldFINGAH. Best movie, *and* best theme song. Shirley Bassey > *. Live and Let Die was the best Bond Theme Song imo Quote from: Kail The only one I really can't stand is Live and Let Die. It just really doesn't click for me. Baron Samedi is fucking creepy in that film. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Grand Design on November 18, 2008, 04:15:42 PM I don't remember the name but it's the one where they ski down the hills for a bit while people shoot at them and they drive off the side of the road and the car explodes and they jump out of an airplane and some pretty girl is killed at some point. That one. That would be Thunderpussy. I literally just fell out of my chair. Goldfinger is my all time favorite. Casino Royale (the recent one) may eclipse it upon further review. It was the only Bond film that got me emotionally involved in the story. Also, Chris Cornell made that the best theme, in my O. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? It's all gimmick, no heart. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: NowhereMan on November 18, 2008, 05:10:15 PM From Russia with Love
Goldeneye. Live and Let Die I will also allow in for sheer :awesome_for_real: ness. Best Bond seduction evah! Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Velorath on November 18, 2008, 05:52:20 PM I've always had a fondness for Never Say Never Again since it was the first Bond movie I ever saw.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Jeff Kelly on November 19, 2008, 12:37:06 AM The only Brosnan Bond worth it is the World is Not Enough, for no reason other than Michelle Yeoh. She was in 'Tomorrow never dies' Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: ahoythematey on November 19, 2008, 07:26:23 AM Jeff beat me to it. I was starting to question some very basic assumptions about the people saying they thought The World is Not Enough as their favorite Brosnan, because that movie was just about as bad as it gets. Tomorrow Never Dies had Michelle Yeoh and, apart from Goldeneye, was the only Brosnan bond I can still watch.
Connery: You Only Live Twice Moore: Live and Let Die Dalton: The Living Daylights Brosnan: Goldeneye Craig: Casino Royale Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Bunk on November 19, 2008, 08:17:00 AM Lazneby: On her Majesty's Secret Service
Niven: Casino Royale :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: HaemishM on November 19, 2008, 08:22:03 AM Shit, that's what I get for not looking up the stuff on IMDB. Yeah, Tomorrow Never Dies is the one I meant - Michelle Yeoh is teh awesome. World is Not Enough - fuck what a piece of dogshit that was. Denise Richards as nuclear scientist named Christmas Jones. :uhrr: :ye_gods:
Goldeneye was decent, but it had that scene where he catches the plane at the beginning that's falling over a cliff. That one broke me. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: K9 on November 19, 2008, 09:58:17 AM The problem with all post-Goldeneye Bond films is that they got too caught up with the notion that fancy gadgets were what had made previous Bond films successful. If you're going to argue that the catching the plane scene broke Goldeneye for you then I'd return that the defensive driving using your phone as a remote-control scene was breaking for me. That said, the world is not enough wasn't a bad film overall; Die another Day and the World is Not Enough showed us the depths that could be plumbed.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Rishathra on November 19, 2008, 10:26:32 AM So while it seems the consensus is that the Brosnan Bonds were mostly shit (and I agree), I think Brosnan as an actor made an excellent Bond, he was just saddled to shitty shit shit writers.
Also, Goldeneye. And Michelle Yeoh. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Mrbloodworth on November 19, 2008, 10:54:48 AM All of them.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Strazos on November 20, 2008, 07:56:17 PM I haven't put much time into the older Bonds. I think I like Goldeneye the best, out of the newer ones.
I can sit through pretty much any Bond movie, I imagine. Even the weird one with the model guy as Bond. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Numtini on November 21, 2008, 06:52:05 AM I'm torn between On Her Majesty's and my affection for the delightfully offensive You Only Live Twice
Best would be different, either Russia or Goldfinger. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: stray on November 21, 2008, 07:25:35 AM From Russia with Love. Classic Connery, Robert Shaw, Rosa Klebb and her shoe dagger. It felt more on the line of the Flemming novels than the silly later stuff. As for the newer movies, I'll admit to loving Goldeneye. Russia here too. I like Goldeneye because Famke's my favorite Bond girl. And possibly, villain. ;) Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: ahoythematey on November 22, 2008, 12:23:15 PM I agree. Izabella Scorupco is the only reason I watched Vertical Limit, and Famke Janssen can break me whenever she'd like.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: stray on November 22, 2008, 01:51:15 PM Not to say she isn't always hot (she is), but she was damn near perfect in that.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Xerapis on November 27, 2008, 06:34:15 PM Hmm...I always loved The Man with the Golden Gun.
In spite of the comedy, and solely because of Christopher Lee as Scaramanga. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Ubvman on November 28, 2008, 01:17:17 AM I have to say that I LIKE the gadgets in Bond movies. But like all things, they have to be done in moderation and with some bit respect to the moviegoer. Thats one reason why I never liked Die Another Day - Akira death ray satellites I can take, but invisible cars is just making fun of us. Moonraker was just plain stupid - James Bond in space...
Sean Connery: You Only live Twice Connery did several gadget heavy Bond movies, but IMHO - if done right as in here, it is a classic. Rappelling down the mouth of a disguised volcano serving as a launchpad for space capsule eating rockets - WINNER. Roger Moore: The Spy Who Loved Me Submarine convertible Lotus Espirit and supertankers that eat SSBNs. The only Moore Bond movie that i can stomach to any real extent. Pierce Brosnan: Tomorrow Never Dies Michelle Yeoh. Matt Damon: The Bourne Identity Huh... Could sworn that the last two Bond movies actually featured Jason Bourne... Since Quantum of Solace is a big hit, the next Bond movie will actually feature more of the grim n' gritty tough guy riff. Mores the pity because thats just not "James Bond" anymore. No more gadgets, no more Q, no more suave agent with the girls - just glum, depressive and almost suicidal Daniel Craig. Craig's Bond does not enjoy being James Bond - and that IMHO puts him far below all the other Bonds (except maybe David Niven). PS: Quantum as the new ongoing supervillain criminal organization? Bah! Why can't they resurrect SPECTRE!? PPS: Yeah, I know SPECTRE is tied up with the whole Thunderball/McClory lawsuit - pity. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: stray on November 28, 2008, 01:20:38 AM i think bond was closer to craig's gruff moodiness in the books.. or so i hear.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Grand Design on November 28, 2008, 05:02:06 AM Where's the Thanksgiving weekend Bond marathon here in the states? A quick scan through the channels reveals nothing. I'm starting to get nervous, very nervous.
Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: Merusk on November 28, 2008, 05:52:53 AM Where's the Thanksgiving weekend Bond marathon here in the states? A quick scan through the channels reveals nothing. I'm starting to get nervous, very nervous. Last night it was on sci-Fi of all places. Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough. It seems that Spike isn't running it anymore. Of course, today they're running Mork & Mindy all day, and tomorrow is a Stephen King movie marathon.. so yeah, looks like no Bond marathon at all this year. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: shiznitz on November 28, 2008, 06:31:57 AM Spy Who Loved Me was my first one and will always be high on the list, but From Russia With Love is my favorite: good gadgets, good villain, good naive hot bond girl. I thought Brosnan was going to mark a huge revival in Bond movies with Goldeneye, but we all agree on how that turned out, I see.
We should rank top ten and then score them like that MMO thread. Does The Living Daylights make anyone's top ten? It wasn't bad and it had some great scenes but the package just didn't quite come together. Worst Bond films? The World Is Not Enough and License to Kill. The latter was killed by horrible Bond girl. Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: NowhereMan on November 28, 2008, 08:15:26 AM Craig's Bond does not enjoy being James Bond - and that IMHO puts him far below all the other Bonds (except maybe David Niven). It wasn't bad and it had some great scenes but the package just didn't quite come together. It is definitely in mine. I think Dalton made a good Bond but is generally reviled more because of the suckiness of License to Kill than for anything wrong with Living Daylights. One of the better title songs, too.Title: Re: Favourite Bond Film? Post by: ahoythematey on November 28, 2008, 11:12:34 AM I liked The Living Daylights, it was actually one of the first bond movies I remember crushing over the bond girl. I always thought it was kind of neat how they brought back Joe Don Baker as a Bond ally in Goldeneye after he played a main villain in The Living Daylights. Makes me hope for a Daniel Craig-Sean Bean mashup at some point.
