Title: 82% of the copies of World of Goo are pirated Post by: UnSub on November 16, 2008, 01:11:56 AM 82% of the copies of World of Goo are pirated. (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/11/15/world-of-goo-piracy-rate-82/)
The game costs $20. It released a demo. It was DRM free. It was an indie release and got good reviews. This is why we can't have nice things. E.g. this indie game with DRM (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17350) had a 92% piracy rate. They also calculated that for every 1000 pirate downloads they were able to stop they got *1* extra sale.

The game has a demo and can be purchased for $20. That means it has a DRM at all. What it doesn't have is the method of post-purchase call-home nonsense. But that's just a feature. Not all DRM is created equal. Verifying a purchase is fine. Quote by the way, just in case it’s not 100% clear, we’re not angry about piracy, we still think that DRM is a waste of time and money, we don’t think that we’re losing sales due to piracy, and we have no intention of trying to fight it. They also seem willing to look at the actual numbers and methods and accept the results instead of just heaping Starforce onto a title. And how much food does sweet, sweet pirate kudos put on the table again? Adopting the Net's stoner attitude toward piracy isn't going to win them any more paying business in the long run. But I'm sure having pirates love you will be really cool when you go back to the call center. Title: Re: 82% of the copies of World of Goo are pirated Post by: Rishathra on November 16, 2008, 08:18:27 PM It puts more food on the table because they didn't have to spend any money on DRM. Not sure how that's a stoner attitude. Or are you aware of some DRM scheme that actually works?
Also, it's not just pirates; paying customers appreciate lenient or no DRM in their games as well. Having happy customers helps business in the long run. In other news Adobe's demos lock me out before I've even used them. Fucking retarded. |
