Title: Buck Rogers on DvD
Post by: Riggswolfe on November 16, 2004, 04:25:37 PM
I picked it up today. I'm almost afraid to watch it. I loved it as a kid but am not sure it will have aged well. Other than Erin Gray's character. Who I could stare at all day...

It's cooler now than when it was released (actually I was probably too young then to appreciate it then. It was more my brother's thing). Haven't seen the DVD, but I did pull out some VHS's the other day. Funny shit. Just a fun show, no matter when it was released. Does it come with the first TV movie or what?

Sounds great. Another one I need to get on DVD is Flash Gordon. I wonder if anyone can pull off campy serial sci-fi like this these days. What happened? Sci-Fi just got all serious and shit.

Anyone here remember Super Fuzz?

Beedebedebede!
Tweekie = greatest robot ever.

Kind of curious to see just how cheestastic this show would look after the 25 years it's been off the air.

ETA:  They really need to rerelease Greatest American Hero while they're at it.

It was released on DVD but then went out of print.
There's always eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=617&item=6339761351&rd=1).

Edit: Looks like it has been re-issued in region 4 right now so hopefully there'll be a region 1 re-issue in the near future.

Edit: 25th anniversary re-release will be coming out next year on DVD.

I used to love Greatest American Hero. It may age even worse than Buck Rogers though.

And yes, I'm wondering about the cheesiness too. Gonna watch it tonight after work.

Most definatly agree. Tweekie was the man.

A 25th anniversarry Flash Gordon?  Sweet, I've needed some over-the-top campy stuff to round-out my DVD collection, and the British comedies aren't quite cutting it.

Erin Gray made my pre-puberty intersting. HA HA tingly parts.

I can imagine the show would hold up, because it never bothered to take itself too seriously.

As for Flash Gordon...

FLAAASSSSSSH!! AAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

You can see a streaming episode here (http://www.buck-rogers.com/enter.html).

Netflix also has the Buck Rogers DVD set. I had it in my queue but aftering seeing the streaming episode I'm not sure I want to watch all 12 DVDs worth. A little to much 70s in there.

Since this is in the theater of the mind, I'll have both.....simulatneously.

BTW, you are reffering to Ornella Muti (http://www.ornellamuti.it/).

There are some lovely NSFW photos of her on that site.

Kind of weird this came up, because Flash Gordon was just on the Movie Channel. I take it back...Damn, that movie sucks. Haha. Max Von Sydow is still cool, but it might be best that I just leave it in childhood memories. It's not even that funny in a corny kind of way. At least Buck Rogers was a comedy.

That's the same woman that was on the show then, but now? Or then?

Either way, much hawtness.

No, Ornella Muti was the Princess from Flash Gordon; the pictures are the princess from Buck Rogers (Pamela Hensley).

Either way..."Bedi Bedi Bedi...What a body Buck!"

Queen had some great soundtracks. Highlander and Flash.

As for current cheesey sci-fi....I've said it before Andromeda is fairly cheesey, in a good way. I watched some out-takes from it last night with the wife, and it appears Kevin Sorbo asks every new woman on the show "Have you seen my force lance?" when he misses a line, which is quite often.

I disagree.

Where is this "Buck Rodgers was a comedy." crap coming from?  No, it actually wasn't.

I agree. Buck Rogers was no more a "comedy" then A-Team was.

Spots of humor here and there, with lite action-drama for the most part.

I dunno, I think I was getting a pretty bad contact buzz the last time I watched, so that might have been it.

Though when Tweekie starts getting down to disco, it seems like they're not exactly shooting for seriousness. It's basically the whole 20th century guy transported into the 25th century thing...That concept works great for comedy, and they obviously play on it. Plus, the guy thought he was such a pimp. He acts more like a character from the Love Boat than he does anything Sci-Fi. Hell, just the name "Buck" is pretty funny.

Battlestar Galactica I would call serious. Buck Rogers didn't really get into more drama until the last half of episodes.

The Buck Rogers books circa 1989 from M.S. Murdock et. al. are pretty good if you like post-apoc/cyberpunk/space opera. They are out of print but it looks like Amazon has them used for dirt cheap.

Well I watched a bunch of Buck Rogers last night while waiting for HL2 to install.

Initial thoughts:

Music...sooooo 70's. Especially in the pilot movie. I must've blocked that song out of my memory prior to watching these dvds.

Women: Hot. Hot. Hot. Not just Erin Gray and the princess, but most of their guest stars. They also tended to be from the less is more school of clothing.

The action is generally cheesy but fun to watch. I also enjoy seeing little things I missed as a kid, like how Col Deering and Dr Huet play off Buck's arrogance to get him to help them with stuff. And like how Buck apparently beds every woman he comes across (at least so far) and Colonel Deering puts up with it while giving him doe eyes.

I think if I was Buck Rogers Earth would be doomed. I'd have had a hard time turning down Princess Ardalia.

Not a comedy?  It has a phallic-headed robot voiced by Mel Blanc and a character called Tiger Man.

Wasn't there a Hawk Man too near the end of the series? I don't remember Tiger Man so one of us may be confused.

Yes.  He was creativly named, Hawk.

Oh. My. Fucking. God. I was tempted to check out the DVD but that ugly reminder saved me. Sometimes nostalgia is best left undisturbed.

Tiger Man was one of the Ardala/Kane's henchman.  He and Buck went mano e mano in a gladitorial death match in one episode if memory serves.

Grrrrr, I'm Tiger Man!

EDIT: Just noticed he is in the second picture of Ardala up there, although sadly out of focus. I think he was her bodyguard.  I also forgot to mention Gary Coleman's "What you talking about Buck" supergenius kid planet president, Mark Leonard with a removabale head and great plotlines/ep titles like Cruiseship to the Stars and Las Vegas...in Space! .  Glen Larson at his finest. That show was comedy gold.

BTW, I like/d it quite a bit.

Well actually there is more than one Tigerman. Buck kills the original in the original movie by stuffing a bomb down his pants and kicking him off a platform. The other must be his brother or something.

Tiger Man 2, Electric Boogaloo.
