Can't you just disallow emails from free services?

Too many people use gmail. Sure, spammers use it now, but I have a handy thing in the upper left hand corner that tells me when someone registers.

I can dig that lots of people use gmail. However, every one of those people also has a sekrit home email address tied to their ISP. It isn't like F13 sells email addresses or spams people (although I get the occasional mail when Signe reports one of my posts to the moderators  :why_so_serious: ). I don't have a problem using my semi-private email for reputable sites. And this one  :grin:

I moved the board I managed to vBulletin because it's been the only thing that seems to keep the automated registrations at bay.

It was how I collected your private email addresses to sell later on.   I don't do that anymore, though.  I run a legit business now from my virtual office in Nigeria.

Removing the report post button might have something to do with it, too.

Signe's relentless clicking keeps the report button hidden from view.

We added something else to the registration page, if it works we can open registrations back up.

I wasn't relentless.  I hardly ever reported anyone.  Maybe five times in all my years here!  Such drama.

I suggest we go back to the good old days of waterthread.

I wonder how many people actually know their ISP related email? I certainly dont.
Due to moving so much I never bothered using them, as I would always have to tell people about my new email address. Same reason why I dont change my cell phone number. It stays the same no matter where I move to.

11 years is an exaggeration I think. Even if he's counting from back in the original Lum the Mad days that all started in late 1998 if I remember correctly. So maybe 10 years if he was around then.

Hmm, I had thought it was before 1998, UO was up in 1997. I had registered on Lum's board (not as Angry Bob, forget what name) when the users were Lum, Romp, some other guys from ToM, and me. At least 100 years later Greybeard linked to the site and a bunch of other people showed up. For accuracy's sake, lets say 10 years with a margin of error of 1 year. And obviously, this was a succession of websites that "the community" migrated to as internet drama and postmodern ennui closed the different sites down. It's a cycle that's repeated several times. It's like the new Battlestar Galactica cyclical time thing, but instead of the universe it's a message board where people re-argue the same shit each time a new game comes out.

I was late to the party on UO and didn't start playing until September 1998 when it was already a year old. I discovered Lum's the fall of that year or maybe even the winter of 1999. I'm pretty sure it hadn't been around a whole year at that point but maybe I'm wrong. It didn't even have real forum software at first - just this Ktalk thing that let anyone leave a message without registering.

Winter of 99 here.  My family had just gotten its first computer, I posted there and at the old version LOTRO board (the version that had permadeath). 

Yay, message board epeen thread! I migrated to Lum's from the UO newsgroup around ten years ago. Took me several months to realize there was message board beyond just the threads for the front page articles.  :uhrr:
