Title: Quantum Rise on Tuesday - Mandatory "Set Long Skills" post
Post by: Endie on November 10, 2008, 04:44:17 AM
As is traditional, this is your reminder to set long skills training, because CCP patches are not universally successful nor invariably smooth.

Now, a lot of retards on this very board thought that the patch happens at the usual downtime of midday.  This is not the case: you will not be able to log in.  The patch starts at 0200 or so Eve time.  And last time they started early.

As is by now traditional, this thread shall now devolve into epeen waving about what skills we are training during this period:

- Remote Armor Repair Systems V (for capital remote armor reppers and better repping of pos modules in the weeks of fighting in ZS- that lie ahead)
- Logistics IV (I refer the right honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some minutes previously)
- Caldari Carrier IV (two carriers in a system = 24 fighters to assign, so ask Samson about how to make your LVBee characters)
- Armored Warfare Specialist IV (because which of you don't want 20% bonuses to all resists in the gang?)

Thanks Endie, I was training Gallente BS III which would end right in the middle of this downtime.

Switched to Sharpshooter V.  They now have a week to get the game unfucked.  Hopefully that's enough.

Jump Drive Calibration V

Heyheyhey, someone is getting close to going a very long way in capitals.  Have you seen the stuff on the GF forums about making money as a JF pilot?

I'm an odd 1 day away from finishing Sharpshooter V, which is going to get way too damn close for my liking.

Battlecruiser V, ahoy!

Battlecruiser V, ahoy!

In our new, slowed-down world, I cannot help but think that this will be a wise investment.

Not sure what skill. I'm still patching WINE to make EVE fucking log in. That, plus figuring out why it refuses to run at any resolution than my desktop one.

Heyheyhey, someone is getting close to going a very long way in capitals.  Have you seen the stuff on the GF forums about making money as a JF pilot?

11.25 LY trips with 360,000m3 should make for some very nice logistics.  77s to AZN in 3 jumps, or to ZS- in 2.  0-o to ZS- in 2, ZS- to low-sec/empire border in 4 etc...

But no, I haven't looked too in depth at anything for info on JF piloting or moon mining yet.  (I'm also not finding much JF info on GF forums now that I'm looking unless I'm searching for the wrong thing?) I'm still a long ways from the isk to buy one so I figured not much point yet.  I actually owe someone a bunch of isk out of my next batch since I borrowed some I was short to get the pilot character right away so I could get a head start on JDC V.  :uhrr:

It seems like this happens to someone every time.  I was tempted to switch and try to sneak in a 2 hour skill before it went down, but I'm glad I didn't.

Been putting this off on one of my toons for far too long, now that he can fly a Recon (yeah I know priorities) I figured he needed HAC as well (and the short sprint to Adv Weapon Upgrades 4 won't hurt his fitting either)

this happened to me too....I thought I had at least another two hours.  Will CCP reimburse the lost sp?  somehow I think the answer is no, but I can't imagine a valid excuse why not

Title: Re: Quantum Rise on Tuesday - Mandatory "Set Long Skills" post
Post by: Pax on November 11, 2008, 05:24:47 AM
No, they won't reimburse any SP.

Long-term, this downtime-screw-up might have a positive effect, as now players will push for a skill queue even more.

Also, the server came back online about 20 minutes later, so there was a good window of opportunity to chance the skill train afterwards. At least, that is what their argument will be.

Title: Re: Quantum Rise on Tuesday - Mandatory "Set Long Skills" post
Post by: IainC on November 11, 2008, 05:44:22 AM
This comes up every time the server falls over, a bunch of people will shout that CCP is stealing their SPs and that they deserve an SP refund, you can search the EvE-O forums for the usual response to that if you can't guess what it is by yourself. Set a long skill and get on with your life, if you didn't manage to do that then you'll lose a day of training at most - not a big deal.

so I'm supposed to stare at evemon or spam logins?

and no, a day of training isn't a huge deal, but it's more the principal.... if you give us a time the server will go down, then stick to it. overshooting a finishing time is one thing, but starting early is just a pissoff...... what ticks me off about it isn't so much the SP as I just feel like ccp is flipping us the bird.

if they'd refund SP i'd at least feel like they were admitting to a mistake, but i don't think they believe they made a mistake, and even worse, i don't think they'd reimburse me even if they thought they had made a mistake

Chillax.  So you gambled on being able to change skills in a certain window (it was only down for 30-40 minutes) and lost a day's training.  So?  Next time you know to change the skill in advance.  This happened last time, too, and will almost certainly happen again.

(I'm assuming you lost skill traning time because that's a whole lot of rage and self-entitlement otherwise.)

 :heartbreak:
didn't mean to come off that way. is it that wrong to get a little ticked  over getting snubbed like this? like i said, it's not the sp that i'm losing, it's that i'm 90% sure that ccp won't reimburse me for them, when i see it as their mistake.... just because it's happened before doesn't make it ok- in fact, it makes it worse, imo. I didn't see it as a gamble at all.... was i really that wrong to take ccp at their word? naive maybe, but not wrong

where's the sense of self-entitlement there?

They didn't start early, the server fell over. Then it came back up 30 minutes or so later as Endie said. They don't owe you anything except a word of apology for the interruption. Not your fault the server fell over but they don't owe you training time as a result.

even if they don't owe me, i don't see why they shouldn't just do it for a show of good faith.... they had a little mix up, some people lost sp because of it, why not just practice some good customer service? if i had lost a ship because of the server crash, hopefully they would have reimbursed it- don't see why it should be different for SP.

It just is different.

Good customer service in this case is saying 'We're sorry the server fell over, it's back up now and we've fixed whatever broke it so it won't happen again.' They haven't stolen your SPs from you. If you'd checked the forums you'd have found that it was an unexpected failure and not the patch starting early, so you could then have chosen to wait until the server restarted to change your skill if you cared that much about losing a day of training. If you didn't then that isn't their problem.

Back in my Freelancer days we never reimbursed, neither for our screw-ups, nor for our players' screw-ups.
This policy treated everyone equally and proved the most fair approach.

Having said that, SP loss is a minor inconvenience compared to last year's boot.ini nuke.

By the way, did anyone spot this gem in the patchnotes?

Quote
The agent Yuata Ishodaki, who was located at Notoras II - Lai Dai Protection Service Assembly Plant, has been moved and is now located in the station Sarenemi V - Home Guard Assembly Plant. Lai Dai didn’t want that Agent anyway.

Heh nice find, someone with a sense of humour writing up patch notes promote him immediately.

The one on snakes is pretty good too :

"We unplugged your Snakes so you can sell them for a fraction of their initial price to some noob."

Hah that's good, I been going around thisl week telling pilots to collect the insurance on their Vagas cause they'll be worth less after the patch.

From the Behind the Scenes video. Eom Apocalypse ship model on the guy's shelf, not available in the EVE Store.

edit: way too many typos for one simple sentence.

Patch Notes (http://www.eve-online.com/news/Patch%20Notes%20for%20Quantum%20Rise.pdf)

Warp scramblers now affect MWDs too? Another notch in the ganker's belt, apparently. That seems WAY too powerful for a 10k isk mod.

I am still re-learning how the game is played, so someone else please explain what else I need to be enraged about, and what changes are for the good

It's warp scramblers only - 7.5k range, massive cap drain downsides - and not warp disruptors. Mostly it balances MWDs vs ABs, now both are viable options rather than the MWD being the automatic choice for any PvP ship.

This is what i wrote regarding the changes when someone was talking about whether or not it was too severe. I think it holds true here as well

"Regarding new missile balance? I have no clue, the changes are too many and too large to accurately predict based on sisi testing as to how it will play out and whether or not any single change is too much or too little.

I like that afterburners have more of a place in combat, especially on "defensive" ships such as med range cruisers/frigates. I like that webs are no longer "on/off" switches for speed. I like that speed is now damage reduction rather than damage avoidance. I like that there is more an emphasis on flying your ship and that blaster ships no longer get to sit at 500m and blow things into oblivion. I like that locus rigs finally got fixed. I like that 2 meds can make a competent tackler.

But i don't know whether or not its too much."

Also, IainC, scramblers have the low cap use

Interesting, do bubbles affect MWD too?

At least warp scramblers have some use now.  Before they were just the junior cousin of warp disruptors that no one wanted because they do the same thing with 13k less range.

Well, they did suck but they were 2 points instead of one, less cap use, and like 12 less CPU use. Nice for that 2nd week frigate noob that was hurting for CPU/Cap after equipping his first MWD!

They were good back when more fit WCS, you could catch stabbed haulers and such.  CCP did nothing with them when WCS got changed and that was the problem.  I am not sure about speeds after the patch, time will tell.

Time to find out if holding onto 3 True Sansha Warp Scramblers since Providence was worth it.  11km range and 3 warp scramble strength.  :awesome_for_real:
