Title: F13 Music Recommendations.
Post by: climbjtree on November 04, 2008, 05:16:23 PM
So, someone just gave me a zune 8gb for free today. Still in the box and everything. This laptop I'm working from has no tunes on it, and I've got about two weeks to fill this thing up before I deploy again. Whenever I try to think of songs or artists I get in a rut and end up only being able to come up with a few, so I'm enlisting the help of fellow f13'ers.

I really dig 80's, New Wave, and electronic stuff.

I also really dig oldschool rap like Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the like.

I also enjoy punk, with my favorite punk bands being The Clash and Rancid. I also dig some of the neo-punkish ska style stuff.

I'm not sure where Enter Shikari falls, but I dig the screamo + solid singing + synth that they do.

Classical music is great, but I only know the 'hits' if you will.

Classic rock is awesome. I enjoy Eric Clapton's work from all his bands. This also makes me think of Bob Seger. Also Santana.

I'm really into the Blues, and all styles. Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, BB King to name some major ones. Delta blues are good.

I guess what it boils down to is that I don't like new or southern rap, I don't like country aside from Texas country, and I don't dig most of the pop coming out these days.

I'm really open to all sorts of music though, and language doesn't matter.

I'm counting on the music nerds here at f13 - don't let me down!

Eh he could be like me when I go to download music I totally blank on bands.

Well that and I don't really listen to radio anymore, so anything new I pick up is through friends who introduce me to it.  Most new music sounds like ass to me.

and yes.. I am getting old.   :uhrr:

80's stuff.. Well, that's pretty broad.

The Cure: Disentegration and Pornography
Any Replacements album
The Cult - two albums, Love and Electric
Gang of Four: any singles collection
Violent Femmes (self-titled)
Roth Van Halen
All Sonic Youth albums from EVOL until Dirty (which reaches into the 90's)

Well, if you like the Clash, you should like the gruff voiced Mike Ness as well (i.e. Social Distortion). One of my favorite bands.. all of their albums have something good on them.

Operation Ivy if you like Rancid

Various punk:

The Stooges - Fun House. You can not not have this fucking album. Also, just get their first one and Raw Power as well.

Really, if anything, just get this album and ignore everything else.

Television - Marquee Moon
Siousxie and the Banshees - The Scream
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation

All Stones albums until Some Girls
Get the early Yardbirds shit with Beck.
Every Doors album except Soft Parade.
Every Dylan album up to Blood on the Tracks
All Black Sabbath albums with Ozzy (think he ends on Sabotage)

If you like Bob Seger, then stock up on the Boss too. He's better.   Born to Run, Ashbury Park, the Wild the Innocent the E Street Shuffle

Hip Hop: Your collection means nothing without

Eric B & Rakim: Microphone Fiend
GZA - Liquid Swords
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst

VNV Nation (German)

VNV Nation are British/Irish.

Fields of the Nephilim sound like your bag - try the Elizium album for some really nicely arranged melodic rock.

Oh yeah, any album from Curve as well.

Yes, it's sort of girly industrial shit, but it's good. Probably good bangin music too depending.

Cuckoo is an awesome fucking album.  I go with more white guitar noise than industrial, but damn that woman has a voice that sounds like she spends half the day fucking.

Get some Polvo - Celebrate the New Dark Age and/or Exploded Drawing - Math rock at it's finest.

Alright! Looks like lots of good recommendations in the list and I appreciate the help. I've got to get to bed, but tomorrow I'll start browsing.

By the way, is Kazaa still worth using or is it totally infested with crap? If it's no good, what's the alternative?

I'm too lazy to see if they fit your taste...

The Hush Sound - Wine Red or Lions Roar to get a feel for their style
Lights - Drive my soul

I'd suggest more, but I'm young, hip and like "bad" music.. or something.

I'm a Jazzmaster player -- Hence, a My Bloody Valentine fanatic.

Yeah, I kind of didn't mean to bundle Curve as industrial. I like them mainly for Dean -- his riffs are sick. It's good noisy guitar music, much like MBV... just a little more electro.

I'll throw in a random Tom Waits recommendation here. He's got an enormous back catalogue that changes style fairly dramatically at times, but try some early stuff (Blue Valentine, Small Change) and some later too (Alice, Blood Money). Albums like Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs kinda bridge the gap between styles.

Amazing stuff, Waits is a genius with the most incredible voice I've ever heard.

My favorite Waits albums is still Closing Time actually -- before the crazy singing (which is great too). Just great piano songwriter shit...that really does sound like something played during "Closing Time".

You old romantic Stray  :awesome_for_real:  I have to admit I'm more into the recent (ie last 20ish years) stuff - the harsher he gets the more I love it. Raw, scary, haunting, all works for me.

Not that I don't love the early stuff too - The Piano Has Been Drinking has to be one of my favourite songs ever :)

I haven't seen Queens of the Stone Age on here, so I'll jot them down. New Order is cool for an 80s fix and !!! is good for an updated version of that. (yeah, they're called '!!!')

I second Evil Rider with Led Zep and Stray with Liquid Swords. I'm surprised Stray [edit:didn't] submit Roky Erikson.

Sven Vath is a badass DJ if you like darker stuff. All of his 'Season' albums are cool- I think there's six in all.

The Matter + Form album from VNV Nation is cool.

Chromatics. Portishead.

As far as classical, I like Stravinsky and Charles Ives.

I figured Roky would be too much.  :awesome_for_real:

I did mention QOTSA at first, but figured he might have their albums. If not, then yeah, definitely.
You old romantic Stray

You got me.

Funny thing is though, my favorite track by him was from... well shit, can't remember.. a fairly recent album. It's called "What's He Building?", where he just plays the part of a worried neighbor, speaking to himself, wondering what dark secret the guy across the street is building in his house. Just fucking rich.. Wish he had a whole album of stuff like that.

Apoptygma Berzerk:  Norwegian
Bigod 20: German
Cosmicity: American
Clan of Xymox / Xymox: Netherlands
Covenant: Swedish
S.P.O.C.K. : Swedish
VNV Nation: English/Irish

An impressive list Schild.

According to your list you should probably look into Funker Vogt (another project by the guy from Ravenous), Haujobb (solutions for a small planet is their best album) early Project Pitchfork and Wumspcut (bad english alert however), Suicide Commando, In strict confidence and others. If you like Wolfsheim you should also consider De/Vision and And One (although they have their fair share of german songs) or even DAF/DOS. I'd also recommend some of the early EBM bands like Front 242 or the successor Cobalt 60.

But you most probably already know most of them anyway.

it's strange however to see someone from the US actually be a fan of German/European Darkwave, Gothic and EBM music.

People think Schild is a closet harajuku girl, but he's really a gothic lolita.

Front 242 for days. Who can not like?

[edit] Uh, on the gothic note, I'll just recommend Christian Death, Only Theater of Pain. Goth music used to be so funny.... Not sure what happened.

And what? A gothic lolita?

I have all of that. And De/Vision. And And One (and I've seen them thrice).

These were recommendations for someone else. I tried to stay on the...less esoteric side of it all.

Edit: Also, Love Kills from In Strict Confidence is probably my favorite cover art from the entire genre. Ok, that's not fair, Wolfsheim's Spectator is pretty meta also. And I dig the Evil's Toy covers.

Did you not see the thread a while ago where I went nuts about finding the Celebrate the Nun CDs for like $2-$4 and then the other thread where we put together the f13 radio station thing? Here we go: http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=1075.0

Edit 2: Oh Snap, how could I forget

Delerium - Spheres and Spheres 2
In the Nursery - Engel and Composite
Deine Lakaien - Kasmodiah

I could go through and give albums from all those bands before. But that's sorta a pain in the ass.

1. I don't have any Hello Kitty figurines. The only Hello Kitty thing I have was given to me by another f13er.
2. I probably have music from 50-100 countries from around the world, the vast majority of it entirely niche.
3. My favorite songwriter is Billy Joel. Elton John a close second. Queen is in my top 5 bands.

I could've listed generic regular rock shit, but why bother. He knows who to look for. You can live under a rock and know about generic rock shit from the past 30 years.

Yes, I take offense at mischaracterization.

I knew a lot of people in the mid-late 90s who could help (like Todd from A Different Drum, he found me a lot of shit, along with some of the folks around the Bella Morte scene in Virginia).

Also, I imported a lot, which cost way too much, but whatever.

No, I won't sell my Burning Empires set or CtN's Meanwhile. Or the Handful of Snowdrops albums. Heh.

If you need anything I'd be glad to dig it up and rip it.

Needless to say, wasn't easy tracking it all down.

One of the crown jewels of my collection I gave away because I couldn't play it, it was a certain piece of vinyl from Cabaret Voltaire, you could probably guess which if you know them.

Oh snap, on that note, it looks like CV put out a 3-disc set where I can get all the stuff I lost. Nevermind. No longer regret giving it away.

Edit: Christ, they put it out in 2001, whatever. Will pick that up when I find $50 to blow on an import CD set. /sigh. TBH, I haven't bought much in the last few years, so I'm horribly out of date on the European scene. I do try to keep up online, just not in the collection. Mine halts somewhere around 2004, with breaks in 02 and 03.

Amethystium - Ad Astra, Autumn Interlude
Blue Foundation - Eyes on Fire, Sweep
Conjure One - Sleep, Forever Lost
Delerium - Silence, Run for It, Truly
Living Things - Bom Bom Bom
Mew - Comforting Sounds
Stoney - Best Laid Plans

Grab something like Pandora or LastFM, enter some search parameters and you'll find all kinds of stuff to fill more than 8gigs.  I just rounded out my Downtempo play list in no time using LastFM group favorites.

Trying to track down specific bands will drive you nuts especially when you start weeding through their good stuff and bad stuff.

Well since you use the words 80's, electronic stuff, ska and synth, seems like you would want more reggae in the mix:

Steel Pulse - True Democracy album
Pato Banton - Never Give In album

You might possibly want to look into some Camper Van Beethoven which always gives me some good times in the 80's flashbacks.

Thirding Pandora, really helped open my horizons to some new stuff.
Quote
I'm really into the Blues, and all styles. Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, BB King to name some major ones. Delta blues are good.
Hoodoo Man Blues - Junior Wells (possibly my favorite Chicago Blues album)
Live In Boston vol 1 - Fleetwood Mac (zomg early mac  )
Gold Collection - Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf (2 disc)
Susan Tedeschi - Just Won't Burn (It Hurts So Bad rules)
Luther Allison - Bad News is Coming (amazing funk blues)
Son Seals - Live and Burning (more great funk blues)
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (the Beano album, Claptop is God, a classic)
Albert King - Born Under A Bad Sign (with the Stax band, one of my favorites)
Otis Rush - The Essential Otis Rush (Otis is a total badass)
George Thorogood - George Thorogood and the Destroyers (Delta Slide is wicked)
Muddy Waters - Hard Again (with Johnny Winter, smokin' late career album)
Elmore James - King of the Slide Guitar
SRV - Live at Carnegie Hall
Etta James - Rocks the House
Eric Clapton - Sessions for Robert J (a bit looser then the actual finished album)
Buddy Guy - Skin Deep (his new album, Lyin' Like a Dog may be the best track he's ever recorded)
Freddie King - The Ultimate Collection
John Lee Hooker - Very Best of

Getting a bit more historical:

Alan Lomax: Blues Songbook (good intro to a lot of stuff)
Big Bill Broonzy - All The Classic Sides (Big Bill is amazing)
Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings
Son House - Preachin' the Blues (maybe the best Delta artist)

8GB, heh. I have a 30GB ipod that's waaaay too small. I just cherry picked some of the better stuff to list here. We could also get into jazz (Django Reinhard or Count Basie) and classical (Christopher Parkening or Cantiga) and punk (Fear - The Record). Neo-ska-whatever I like King Django and the Slackers. You mentioned Claptop, I listed my favorite Claptop album (and also Beano), but his From the Cradle is excellent as well. Santana, heh...Black Magic Woman is a Fleetwood Mac song, and there's an amazing version on the Mac album I listed, it's really an outstanding recording (also features Green Manalishi, later recorded by Judas Priest).

edit: Forgot to add Rev. Horton Heat! And Brian Setzer Orchestra/Stray Cats/Nashvillians, Devil Makes Three, Drive-By Truckers. So much good stuff. Folsom Prison Johnny Cash or Cook County BB King for some big house stuff. Allman Bros are another great band, either the classic stuff (Fillmore) or the modern lineup which is as good or better (Live at Jazzfest 2007 via their website). Aretha Franklin - the Delta Meets Detroit, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Blind Willie Johnson, Charley Patton, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance, Derek Trucks Band - Live at Georgia, Eric Burdon with War, Funkadelic, Godsmack - Faceless, Guy Davis (kind of a modern Gary Davis or John Hurt), Taj Mahal, Hound Dog Taylor, James Brown - Say It Live and Loud (BEST FUNK ALBUM EVER), Jelly Roll Morton, Hendrix - Jimi Blues, Johnny Winter - Progressive Blues Experiment, Kenny Wayne Sheppard - 10 Days Out (great great documentary), Kyuss (stoner rock), Leadbelly, Leon Redbone, Les Claypool, Lightnin' Hopkins, Little Walter, Los Lonely Boys, Magic Sam - West Side Soul (classic), Mars Volta, Meat Beat Manifesto, Melvins ( Buzzo), Mushroomhead, Otis Redding, Otis Taylor, Our Lady Peace, Paul Butterfield, Pepe Romero, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder (bluegrass awesome), Roosevelt Sykes (great piano blues), Sonny Boy Williamson, Sonny Landreth, Tom Waits - Small Change, Tomahawk (or anything Mike Patton does), Warren Haynes/Gov't Mule, Wilson Pickett, Zen Guerrilla...that's just another snippet, scrolling through my playlist and picking some of the better stuff.

Embarrassing to admit but I usually code to Sting or REM, fits in the pleasant yet non-engaging, non-distracting, background music to code by category.

So if you ever plan on loaning me your music player to listen to while coding then you have to put both collective works on it.

Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, and Black Sheep for your old school hip-hop.

I don't really know what is considered electronic, but Goldfrapp, Massive Attack, Royksopp, and Ladytron.

Also try Rosetta Stone,Psychedelic Furs, Suspiria and Velvet Acid Christ for moody melodic rock or ambient EBM. New Model Army are great for 80s alt rock flashbacks too.

Das Ich are in the same mould as the industrial stuff Schild posted earlier but a bit more shouty - they have done some cracking remixes of VNV Nation stuff though.

Depending on what you are listening to or looking for it's worth having both Pandora and LastFM.

Here's some free/legal stuff to find explore.

http://www.beatmaka.com/index.php  (http://www.beatmaka.com/index.php) - Little bit of everything.  Requires a sign up, I've never gotten any spam or anything other than a news letter once every couple months, if that.

http://music.download.com/?tag=navtab (http://music.download.com/?tag=navtab) - You can spend hours, if not days, here.  Plenty of free stuff, especially classical.

http://evanescencereference.info/music/ (http://evanescencereference.info/music/) - No brainer.

http://www.purevolume.com/ (http://www.purevolume.com/) - Hit or miss.

Schild and I said Frou Frou within a day of each other!  What are the odds?  Maybe he really IS the long lost non-biological son of mine.  Funny that.  He doesn't seem to muster up any signs of maternal instinct.  Maybe it's my overwhelming dread fear of drunken children without jobs.

Since you mentioned classical, here's a random list:

Bach - Organ works:    Toccata and Fugue in D Minor 565 is the famous one.  They are all good.

Vivaldi - Four Seasons:     Simple yet very effective.  Very diverse in emotion but very tight and focused.  Generally translates quite well to modern listeners.

Mozart Piano Concerto #24:   His piano concertos are all impressive but often showman-like and not particularly serious.  This one, on the other hand, is some serious shit.

Mozart Symphony #40:  Great not in the initial theme but the development.  With alot of classical hits this is the case, but listeners only recognize the initial theme.

All of Chopin's piano works

Schubert - Unfinished Symphony:  Probably one of the most violent and intense over-the-top first movements ever.  Simple and beautiful regardless.

Dvorak - Symphony for the New World

Grieg - Peer Gynt:   You'll recognize it.  It's alot of fun to listen to.  Translates very well to modern listening.

All of Beethoven's piano concertos:  This is where his greatness really shines.  Later ones are quite possibly the peak of western classical music.

Debussy - anything will get you the picture, so to speak (hur hur)

Prokofiev - Romeo and Juliet

Holst - The Planets:  Mars at the least is fucking badass.

Okay, so my connection is slow and I've had to pick and choose between what I'm sampling for now. I must say, y'all have good tastes in music.

There's lots of really good stuff here that I hadn't heard of before, and you guys have made some really good suggestions that I'd just totally forgotten about. Specifically I'm thinking of Psychedelic Furs, which reminded me of The Bolshoi, so thanks for that!

Some long list of blues musicians is great, too. I'm always glad to be exposed to more stuff.

Just looked at what I have with the P-furs on my iphone.  I've got them with;
INXS
Echo and the Bunnymen
Gary Numan
OMD
Love and Rockets
Depeche Mode
The Cure
The Clash
The Church
Squeeze
Pet Shop Boys
Thompson Twins
English Beat

....and on and on

Prince is like Billy Idol and Madonna to me... Totally awesome persona/gimmick/what have you, great vox, people I admire, but only like 5 songs that were truly great to me.

My personal favorite pet (Canadian) indie band:  http://www.jakalope.net/ (http://www.jakalope.net/) Several full length samples on their site.

They're a Dave Ogilvie/Phil Caivano project, female singer from Alberta, Trent Reznor is the associate producer, and includes guest stuff from Bob Pantella (Monster Magnet), Alex Lifeson (Rush), and Bill Reiflin (REM) among others.

Well I agree and I disagree. I don't listen to whole albums of Prince, but he's got more than a few songs I can listen to, but then I like a lot of Madonna too.  I know, It's sad.  I think part of it is it's the music I remember from the age of 8 and up.

Did anyone mention Bowie? I didn't see Bowie or Eurythmics/ Annie Lennox in here either. rar!

I think my music taste is broken at times. I go from the above to Slayer/ Pantera to Mr. Bungle then off to Depeche Mode before a series of Weird Al songs on my iPod.

Shit.. Don't feel bad.. seems like the tastes of quite a few of us are eclectic and "broken". That's a good thing!

Bowie is an absolute through the 70's. I pretty much bypass the 80's and 90's. Some of the recent albums are cool though.

I think, to your chagrin, you'd be surprised how many younger people don't know Bowie, Springsteen, etc.  Much like most people my age don't know Dizzy Gillespie, Al Jolson, The Big Bopper, Frankie Valli, or Buddy Holly other than by name. (Or, "oh hay weren't those guys in that La Bamba movie?")

Music stars have a narrow window of fandom, unless the are ICONIC. Bowie isn't iconic in any way shape or form like The Stones or The Beatles.
What a bunch of tired old stuff you all listen to.  And that's coming from someone who is probably older than very nearly mostly all of at least one of you.

The new stuff I listen to is of the hard rock variety.  Modern pop, R&B and Rap aren't my thing.  It happens, we get old music moves on.

Title: Re: Halp! I need 8gb's of music recommendations.
Post by: Signe on November 05, 2008, 04:51:00 PM
I don't listen to modern pop, r&b or rap either, for the most part.  I do like some rapcore but that's hardly the sort of rap I think you mean.  I mostly passively listen to whatever Righ is into at the moment which ranges from  Hawkwind (eek! talk about old!) to Porcupine Tree to something or other that was invented just a minute ago.  I can't keep up with him.  An evening relaxing with music for me is usually a spli.. umm... lemonade? and some kind of progressive trance or house.  Electropunk or Industrial or something if I'm feeling edgy.  Some of it's old, but not ancient!  Don't let them turn you into a weirdy beardy, Climbjtree!

(I do still have a soft spot in my head... I mean heart... for Slayer, though)

I like to think that, like any musician, my taste is solid, old and new, eclectic, and not-giving-of-the-fuck of what sounds hip or outdated or obscure or conventional. It's just all noise in the end. Most of it is just the same variations of the same 6 or 7 chords being clanked away under different recording situations. And as long as there's some sincerity to it, it's alright by me.

[edit] currently, i've been delving into the "nordic" folk black metal shit, looking for some be-all-end-all representative of that sound... haven't found one. interesting genre though (sometimes a bit tacky... and in many cases, totally fucking insincere  :|).

In addition to Hard Rock Hallelujah is the Arockalypse.

Listening to Lordi makes me want to cut the sleeves of my t-shirt and ride around in a 80's model t-top TransAm.

Edit: Actually, Arockalypse isn't the name of the song. I'll be back with the real name later.

Korpiklaani's earlier stuff might meet that.  they have become more metal with recent albums.

Ulver's classic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kveldssanger  might be up your alley.

if you like enslaved, have you checked out the newer Nachmystium?  their past 2 albums and ep are heading into psychadelic black metal or something like that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nachtmystium
check out Instinct Decay or Black Meddle Part 1 (pink floy reference ftw)

oh also Wolves in the Throne Room

fyi wolves and nach are both american bands.

*edit* to the OP

Townes Van Zandt
Steve Earl
newer Emmy Lou Harris (specifically Red Dirt Girl, or Wrecking Ball)
Jesu (Godflesh frontmans Justin K Broadricks *new* band, shoegazer type stuff)
Camera Obscura (great english indie rock what have you with female vocals)
Tegan and Sarah (great indie rock, and not the annoying kind... plus they are twins... and hot... and Lesbians :awesome_for_real:)
Minor Threat
Dead Kennedys
Seven Seconds album The Crew
Infected Mushroom - psych trance from isreal

and if you want something to play now and then that will make people say "holy mother of god what is that you are playing stop stop before you destroy the world" anything by one of these bands

Origin
Aanal Nathrakh
Berzerker

or some german power noise:  Winterkalte

So I'm changing the title of this thread so that it can just become a place for us to ask for and make music recommendations.

And here's  a couple of recommendations of my own:

If you haven't heard of The Streets, you should give it a listen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2c6g6eG1mQ) It's an english dude named Mike Skinner and it's got a good feel to it. The song I linked is my favorite from his latest album, Everything is Borrowed.

Also, Lost (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s92p6vvMRs) from Chloe day is pretty good. Her stuff is kind of electronic/industrial/goth, and I think I got her from someone on these forums a year or two ago.

So - I see what everyone else is doing here, and I'm going to be lazy, group of friends and I came up with lists of 30 songs we would want to have with us on a desert island. Just saying these are songs I probably wouldn't get tired of hearing for a long time. edit (Wow - this is like a year old list, I'm sure I would make a few changes like the Marky Mark and Katrina and the waves right now - ok - I did change a few.)

1. Hallejula - Maybe the Buckley cover. Depends on the day. KD Lang does this beautify as well. And Leonard has that haunting voice.
2. Famous Blue Raincoat - Lenard Cohen Tori Amos Leonard
3. Count your money - Crazy 8's
4. Landslide - Smashing Pumpkins
5. Prince - Erotic City
6. Styx - Lady
7. Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver
8. Johnny Cash - Hurt
9. Beach Boys - God only Knows (Not the version with Brian in lead.)
10. Peter Murphy - I'll Fall with Your Knife
11. Adam and the Ants - Wonderful
12. Toto - Africa
13. Katrina and the Waves - Walking on SunshineBob Marley - No woman no cry.
14. Queen / Bowie - Under Pressure
15. Almost Irish - Ceann
16. Phantom of the Opera - Think of Me & Angel of Music
18. Weepies - World Spins Madly On.
19. Greg Brown - Who woulda thunk it
20. Jimmy Buffett - The Weather is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful
21. Highwayman - The Highwaymen
22. Marc Cohn - Walking in Memphis or Thunderbird
23. Marky Mark - Good Vibrations (One of those songs that just makes me smile and laugh) CCR - Fortunate Son (Can I get a Sweet Home Alabama Backer with this from Skynard?)
24. Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf
25. Fairytale of NY - Pogues (Probably some version with Kate Melau)
26. Tear you apart - She Wants Revenge
27. With or without you - U2
28. Summer's Cauldron - XTC
29. Heaven (candlelight version) - DJ sammy
30. Close to me - Cure
