Title: Hinterland Post by: sidereal on October 29, 2008, 10:43:14 PM Unless I'm an epic search failure, there isn't a thread on this game yet. How can this be? The feature list is basically what every PC RPG dork came up with when he was sitting in the basement smoking weed with his buddies talking about the ideal game.
If nobody scares me away in the next 20 minutes, I'm going to download it off of Impulse and BIIF it. Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Stephen Zepp on October 29, 2008, 10:49:12 PM factoid: It's made with Torque ;)--first game using any of our engines to make it to Steam.
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: schild on October 29, 2008, 10:51:45 PM Had it for a while (was in the beta also).
Like it a good deal. Simply forgot to make a thread. Be warned - it's really REALLY fucking indie, and that includes all the downsides of shit being indie. Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Tebonas on October 29, 2008, 11:38:01 PM It was fun for a few weeks and definitely worth the price. Got bored somewhat after the patch (which seemed to have reduced the loot on the mobs), but by that time I already had my moneys worth out of it.
Nice game for a quick romp after a busy day when you don't want to overthink it and just relax. Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Yoru on October 30, 2008, 02:36:52 AM Ah, I remember reading some articles about this a few months back. I'd like to hear what you think of it, as it's definitely something I'd like to pick up once I'm finished with PAA 2 and Fallout 3.
Schild - can you give a few examples of where the indieness shines through? Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Sky on October 30, 2008, 07:22:17 AM Ah, thanks. I'd been meaning to check this one out.
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: schild on October 30, 2008, 08:09:16 AM Quote Schild - can you give a few examples of where the indieness shines through? The GUI had up until the most recent release, which I hadn't checked out, Times New Roman as it's font. I think they might've switched to Arial recently for some stuff. Perhaps some Impact here and there. Actually, a screenshot says more than I ever could: (http://www.tiltedmill.com/hinterland/images/ss/hinterland_town_rest.jpg) The coolness of hinterland is purely in design and how watching them try to keep streamlining post-release. The graphics, GUI, etc. make me wonder if they actually have an artist. By indie, I meant experimental but with a budget that doesn't really support their experiment enough for it to gain a wide enough exposure. Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Yoru on October 30, 2008, 08:21:20 AM Funky; they have pretty nice 3D art, while the 2D stuff is... yech. But really, the use of stock fonts bothers you? :oh_i_see:
If you're going to be all graphics-snob, indie isn't where you want to be, usually. I'm absolutely fine with them. I like Tilted Mill and I still play through a full game of Hinterland every few days. Where did I say it was a problem? :ye_gods: Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Ard on October 30, 2008, 09:50:43 AM Dittoing the above. It's not a bad game, but you get what you pay for. It's more for short arcadey bursts, there's not really alot of depth. Don't expect Diablo 3 and you'll be fine.
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: sidereal on October 30, 2008, 11:13:31 AM A lot of the fine-art work in loading screens and portraits is quite good. I think they're just bad at interface design, not 2D art.
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Ingmar on October 30, 2008, 12:32:10 PM Sjofn has been playing it quite a lot lately, she seems to like it. I haven't given it a try as I am swamped with games, but the price is cheap enough that its hardly worth NOT trying, you know?
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Sjofn on October 30, 2008, 02:39:26 PM I really enjoy the game for the reasons already stated. It's a nice little game to blow some time on when you don't want anything particularly deep.
I'm a Tilted Mill fangirl though. Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Slyfeind on October 30, 2008, 03:00:58 PM Oh crap, you can run low on food while making maces? Holy crap, I am SO there!
Title: Re: Hinterland Post by: Yoru on October 30, 2008, 05:06:10 PM I gave it a shot this evening and yeah, it's not terribly deep, but it is some good lightweight fun. Only problem I've seen so far is that the time commitment for a game is in that grey area between cheap fun and deep fun.
That and once I found a chest containing a full set of Gear Of Asskicking +jesus, the rest of the game got trivialized fast. I'll have to try a long game so I can play with more of the mechanics in detail. |
