Title: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nebu on October 29, 2008, 07:55:05 PM I'm bored out of my mind now that WAR has been a disappointment. Can anyone suggest a well crafted Diablo clone for the PC? I'd prefer something with a single player rather than control of a party. I'm a lone wolf like that.
Thanks Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: schild on October 29, 2008, 07:55:46 PM this thread makes me want to cry
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Trippy on October 29, 2008, 08:00:32 PM If you just care about the loot there are some okay games for that like Titan Quest or Sacred. If you want something other than Diablo that has the "omigod the screen is filled with baddies and my mouse is about to expire from clicking so much" gameplay you are out of luck.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: sidereal on October 29, 2008, 08:03:47 PM Titan Quest and Sacred are the canonically acceptable Diablo clones
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Trippy on October 29, 2008, 08:05:19 PM Which is why schild wants to cry.

Can anyone suggest a well crafted Diablo clone for the PC? I'd prefer something with a single player rather than control of a party. I'm a lone wolf like that. Thanks Titan Quest is the only Diablo-like that has entertained me since Diablo 1 (not the biggest D2 fan). The orginal + xp is only $20 on Steam. Like Trippy mentioned the monster density isn't near what D1/D2 could pull off. And thus, it kind feels slower paced. I liked it though, but never got too far because I think something big and must-playish came out shortly after I started it. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nebu on October 29, 2008, 08:22:08 PM Titan Quest it is. I like slower paced, personally... so it may be a great fit.
I appreciate the help. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Furiously on October 29, 2008, 08:36:39 PM Well - if you like slower paced. Maybe go with Rogue...
Or nethack. Or a graphics version of either. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nebu on October 29, 2008, 08:56:01 PM Well - if you like slower paced. Maybe go with Rogue... Or nethack. Or a graphics version of either. That's old school. Played a lot of Rogue and Nethack in my day. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: sidereal on October 29, 2008, 08:57:49 PM Wait, wait. If you're going curses roguelike, Angband and ADOM are your only responsible choices. Specifically, OAngband with randarts and preserve off.

Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nebu on October 30, 2008, 11:15:04 AM I got my answer and downloaded Titan Quest and the expansion last night.
I also learned about Steam in the process. You really can teach an old dog new tricks. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Sky on October 30, 2008, 11:35:29 AM Divine Divinity or Sacred.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Ingmar on October 30, 2008, 11:35:41 AM IMO neither ADOM nor Angband (or any of the 10 billion variants that I tried) ever really got the essence of things down like good old Nethack. ADOM was probably closer.

Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nija on October 30, 2008, 01:53:46 PM Sacred 2 is out in two or three weeks.
Probably has AIDs as copy protection though, so wait for that to get sorted out. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: IainC on October 30, 2008, 02:01:15 PM Dungeon Siege was Diablo without the gameplay depth. If you just want to LEFT CLICK FOR VICTORY!!!! then it'll probably serve.

If you just want to LEFT CLICK FOR VICTORY!!!! then it'll probably serve. I've played through Dungeon Seige and found it to be pretty unsatisfying. I'm really looking for a diablo-like rpg that I can a) control a single player and b) enjoy at a slower, more strategic pace than just the mind-numbing clickfest that is diablo. I'll see what I think of Titan Quest. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Reg on October 30, 2008, 02:17:58 PM If you pick up the game + expansion make sure you start your new game with the expansion executable. You play through all the same stuff as the original game plus the extra expansion content but you also get a new character class and a few new gameplay options that are only available in the expanded game.
I made the mistake of playing the original game and only playing the expansion when I finished it and I missed out on some stuff that made the game more fun because of that. Schild was telling me the same thing last night. Is there a class or something specific I should look for to make sure the expansion is activated before I start playing? Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Reg on October 30, 2008, 02:24:34 PM The new class is Dreamwalker (or something like that). You'll be able to tell you're in the expansion because the first town you're in will have a Caravan Master that let's you store stuff to transfer between characters. That makes twinking your alts much, much easier.

Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: WindupAtheist on October 30, 2008, 02:48:04 PM I like me some ZangbandTK. Shitloads of neat races and classes, and some nice tilesets including one that makes the game isometric. I guess it's another dead one, but what do I care? I'll never see everything in it.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Signe on October 30, 2008, 03:35:40 PM I like Nethack and ZangbandTK more than Titan Quest.
Just sayin'. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: stray on October 30, 2008, 03:40:23 PM Divine Divinity Probably the only game I've banned just for it's name. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Signe on October 30, 2008, 04:10:06 PM I never understood that name. I always felt it was some sort of joke that I wasn't getting.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: ezrast on October 30, 2008, 06:00:37 PM The game has Belgian developers and a German publisher. It was supposed to be called Divinity: Sword of Lies but then CDV changed the name. If you were to ban a game every time a publisher did something retarded, you would pretty quickly be left with no more games ever.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: UnSub on October 30, 2008, 06:09:28 PM As something different, there is Throne of Darkness - control a team of 4 out of a group of 7, set in feudal fantasy Japan, the AI generally isn't retarded, don't know how hard it would be to find.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Nebu on October 30, 2008, 06:10:53 PM Been playing Titan Quest and have one question: Is there any way to change the camera angle? It's driving me insane to the point I can't play it anymore.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: schild on October 30, 2008, 06:12:49 PM Heh. All you can do really is zoom in and out. It is the standard diabli angle after all. :|
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: stray on October 30, 2008, 06:15:27 PM you would pretty quickly be left with no more games ever. It's OK. I'm pretty much like that anyways. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Sky on October 31, 2008, 06:59:51 AM Divine Divinity may be a dumb name, but who gives a shit? Great game.
Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Ard on October 31, 2008, 02:30:28 PM Divine Divinity may be a dumb name, but who gives a shit? Great game. Beyond Divinity was the better game anyhow, but it's technically party based in that you have two characters. It's also much more story driven and not very random. It does however look and feel dated. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: Phred on November 01, 2008, 01:01:28 AM Divine Divinity may be a dumb name, but who gives a shit? Great game. Title: Re: Best Diablo clone for PC Post by: schild on November 01, 2008, 01:03:42 AM Beyond Divinity:
1. Had Starforce. The hardware crippling kind that you can't remove no matter how hard you try, short of formatting. 2. Was a piece of shit. There's no way Ard is talking about Beyond Divinity, at least I hope not. :ye_gods: Otherwise he probably still has Starforce. To date, I think it's the _only_ PC game without absolutely proper cracks. Though it might've been cracked recently with some complicated .dll shit. Larian removed Starforce in the 1.49 patch (http://www.larian.com/riftrunner/support.php). I think BD was one of the games that didn't install Starforce until the first run, so you could install and patch it without getting infected. (or was that X3? One had the happy no-Starforce patching process, the other the unhappy one where you had to install, get infected, patch, and then (try to) remove Starforce with one of the official removal tools and/or some registry editing.) The game wasn't as good as Divine Divinity, though it had some interesting features (the Battlegrounds, at least for the first few of them before they turned into pure experience grinds). The voice acting and the buy/sell inventory interface were not among them. The voice acting and the buy/sell inventory interface were not among them. I liked it more, but I've got odd tastes to begin with, but yeah, the voice acting was horrific, but I thought the actual text was more amusing than not. And last time I actually looked for it, I didn't have starforce lurking on my computer, but I also bought the game WAY after it launched, and never played it without patching it. The 1.49 does remove starforce, which I had to go double check since you just managed to freak me back out again on it. |
