Title: Non-Crap Alternatives to WordPress?
Post by: CmdrSlack on October 15, 2008, 03:28:03 PM
So, in an effort to upgrade WordPress, I've been forced to nuke my blog from orbit and reload. I ALMOST had it working last night and something went goofy.

I've been working on it all afternoon, including another nuke from orbit and try again. For some reason, it's looking for a file that's not there. I'm tempted to clear my browser cache and whatnot before I totally give up, but if that doesn't work, does anyone have a good suggestion for a non-wordpress solution?

I can't recall the name of the software I used prior to WordPress, but it was pretty crap in comparison.

I just want something simple that runs on my hosting (mysql and php supported), etc.

Any suggestions?

Mephisto (http://mephistoblog.com/)!

Just wait for Trippy to tell you not to.

Doesn't run on PHP.

f13.net runs on Nucleus CMS (I think Ookii picked it). It's okay, may work for your purposes:

I've heard that Squarespace is good, but I'm no tech wiz.

Mephisto runs on Ruby on Rails. That's why I told people not to listen to you last time. Not nearly as many servers are setup to run RoR compared to PHP. Nor are there that many IT people that know how to set it up, troubleshoot and maintain it compared to PHP or .NET.

What version of WP were you on and what are you upgrading to?  In the five or so years I've been running WP I've never had a problem.

You did back up your db, didn't you?

You could go with Drupal, but then again you couldn't upgrade Wordpress correctly so who knows if you could operate Drupal.   :awesome_for_real:

I'm doing everything right with WP. I have backups, etc. The problem is that a specific PHP file is looking for some directory that isn't even PART of WP. I'm not entirely sure what's wrong, and that sucks.

As far as Drupal goes, that was the crap one I was using prior to WP.

Well if you have backups and want to get WP back up I'm sure I or someone else here could help you get it back up and running.  Really all you need is a backup of your MySQL database, that is where all the juicy stuff is.

Yeah, I guess I need to upload my .sql file to the new DB I have set up...then change the info in teh WP-config.php file to reflect the new server info.

Grr. I should have left well enough alone.

Joomla is dead easy to use and very flexible. The downside is that you need to search around for the components you need to get it to do what you want it to do (such as comments), although there is an official list of them here http://extensions.joomla.org/ so it's not that hard.

Can anyone recommend any CMS for managing corporate web pages? The focus would be on web pages like documentation etc. and not so much on blogging (though it would be nice if there is support for a blog as well). One important feature would be to have revision control over the page content. Even though the site would be edited only by employees, someone is bound to delete an entire page at some point accidentally and there really should be a way to get it back without resorting to actual backups. It would also be nice to have a decent WYSIWYG editor (for the technically impaired). It should run on Linux (Ubuntu) and be free. We have complete control over the server so it doesn't have to be implemented in PHP as we can install anything needed.

Define "revision control".

Page history. We can revert edits, see who edited what, what changes they made etc.

I also like Joomla, which has really come on in recent releases.  That said, for a while it suffered with security (as in defence against omghax).  I dunno what state that is in, now.

A lot of that is answered by Joomla, but I didn't use any revision control stuff so I can't answer on that.

I use Broadvision in my working life, and that, I can tell you, is horrible.  Especially once you use stuff like Sharepoint and test the fresh air of sane functionality.

Drupal would probably work. Not sure if Joomla would.

I tried Joomla, it doesn't do revisions. There's a commercial plugin for it that would do it though.

We have some people here that have used Drupal before and they say it is horrible, so I'll try to avoid it.

Might check Plone next. Looks complex though.

Plone's an interesting beast. Its setup is very atypical but if you can get a handle on that it does have revision control in the latest version.
