Title: Lord British in space!
Post by: Ubvman on October 13, 2008, 12:30:06 AM
I haven't seen it posted in any of the forums here yet so:
(move to general if more appropriate)

US game designer blasts into space with DNA cargo (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081012/ap_on_sc/as_kazakhstan_russia_space;_ylt=A0WTUcO39PJIZngBfTCs0NUE)
Tourist Blasts Off in Russian Rocket (http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/world/international-space-kazakhstan.html?_r=1&oref=slogin)

 Godspeed, Richard Garriot!  :awesome_for_real:

Need more stories about the fact the latest space tourist lives in a castle with a moat and dungeon. I picture him walking into the ISS and saying "Your time has come".

His dad was an astronaut too - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owen_K._Garriott

If I had a spare $30M, not sure I'd splurge on a space trip… …but then, it's the thing to do for today's billionaire…

I'd do something stupid... like change the lives of people in third world countries.  Then again, I'm crazy like that.

Is it wrong to hope the ISS or his re-entry capsule turns into a meteor while he is aboard?

I'd feel horrible about the other astronauts, but I do think I'd cheer.  At least until the first bit sunk in. :|

(Which I know.  Having a shuttle disaster the day before my birthday was still close enough to muck it up for several years.)

I think Lantyssa just wants to keep him from convincing dumbasses to give him money again and taking it away from other companies - which will surely be his MO upon his arrival back to earth as a SPACE HERO.

In which case, I agree.

Much better.

(You're not gonna freak because I edited the quote, are you? I didn't know doing it twice, one of which was purposefully poking a button, constituted a habit. :uhrr:)

The irony of an astronaut murdering him and then taking a picture with "PK'D! LOL!" on it would be all kinds of awesome.

I really find this whole thing fucking stupid.

He bugs me as an individual. I don't want him to die, I just wish that the whole Tabula Rasa debacle (and by debacle, I mean existence) had never happened.

But you know, I'm just a peasant working for his money. I wouldn't understand the complexities of game design from the castle owning, $30m ticket dropping, spoiled bastard perspective.

(rich people make me butthurt)

Edit: Nevermind, I think the whole thing is insane. Just gonna leave it at that.

Its not like other billionaires do more useful things with their money, so let him have his fun. Hell, I loved Ultima up to VII/2, so he deserves some credit for that.

His later games sucking doesn't invalidate the fun he brought me. I just didn't buy Tabula Rasa, so I don't have to be angry about it.

I'll point out that ultimately this is all I want, since some people seem to think I actually might wish harm on someone.

It's internet bluster, about a pointless article, on a pointless waste of money, for someone whom I consider at best pointless and at worst hurtful of the gaming industry in the last few years.  It's worthy of being in Serious Business, so I'm going to treat it as such.

I don't actually wish ill of anyone.  Even the loonies I can't stand I just want to go away and be quiet.

See Nebu's comment for my feelings on this.  His first one, not the one playing along with my posts.

Space is cool.  I like the space program.  Visit APotD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) daily.  I'm Big into Sci-Fi.  Would think it really cool to go myself.  I still consider it a waste of money.

Yeah I'm just being a pedant about 'pointless'. While I love space (as a child I could tell you the distance between all the planets in the solar system, their mass, etc) I also would probably do something different if it came down to having that much money. But that's a question of what you would do with you money, not if what you're doing has a point.

He wants to go to space. He gets to go to space.

Now, to properly derail this thread:

Hitler had a point, he wanted to wipe out the Jewish race. It was an abhorrent point, sure, but it was a point. If you happen to agree with him that wiping out the jewish race is a good thing then he might seem to you to have had a wonderful point.

If we have 30million to throw about our choice between "going to space", "wiping out jews", and "helping the homeless" isn't determined by one of them having a point and the others not but by our personal evaluation of the extent to which the point of each is valuable and worthwhile.

Post by: Tebonas on October 17, 2008, 01:50:25 AM
That comparasation is bullshit.

Wiping out Jewish people negatively affects Jews (obviously)

Garriot pissing away his money on useless stuff (and he has a history of doing that) does not affect anybody else.

The man is a big child. He has his own castle for heavens sake. Does he use his money in a responsible way? Certainly not. But its not like he stole that money from anybody. People bought his games. EA bought his company. They could have given to charity instead just as easily as him. Hell, I give to the Red Cross and to the WWF anually, but if you suggested it was my obligation to do so I would tell you to go fuck yourself.

I still think killing or not killing people is never a question of personal evaluation, but I might have gone somewhat over the tangent here.

Blame it on the second language thing, I guess thats better for me and I won't have to apologize!  :awesome_for_real:

While I hope Richard gets back ok, it would be kinda funny to hear the transcript of a problem:

"Houston, we have a problem."
"Sorry, I cannot help thee with that."

(I know it's not NASA, stfu)

He sold Origin Systems to EA in 1992 for $35 million. Invest that money wisely before the tech runup and that's a lot of salad.

Title: Re: Lord British in space!
Post by: Righ on October 17, 2008, 08:02:13 PM
Also, he may have paid $30 million for the flight but he in turn has been paid by a number of sponsors, so he's only out of pocket by a fraction of that. It was in the article or something. Hitler wasn't.

If he invested his money in stocks wisely, he's recently lost a fair amount of it. We've have heard from him about that, but in space no-one can hear you scream.

He also made quite a bit of money when Destination Games was sold to NCsoft (not sure as to the exact amount but it was a significant portion of NCsoft stock).

That being said he postponed his trip a few times due to the cost.

He has several sponsors I believe, one of them is Seiko:
SEIKO Spring Drive Spacewalk: The Quiet Revolution goes into space (http://www.seikowatches.com/baselworld/2008/press/details/10_spring_drive_spacewalk.html)
Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk (http://www.seikospringdrive.com/spacewalk/watchinfo/index.html)

He's wearing a nice watch indeed:
(http://www.seikowatches.com/baselworld/2008/images/press/details/10_01_spacewalk.jpg) (http://www.seikowatches.com/baselworld/2008/images/press/details/10_05_spacewalk.jpg)

Its a very expensive watch, several thousand dollars - but my other hobby is collecting watches, so I'm gonna have a look at it...

On another note,
People here are so blasé - either about space travel or even gamers in space. C'mon - its LORD BRITISH IN SPACE!!!!

Tough crowd - I'm kinda stoked for him...  :awesome_for_real:     :why_so_serious:
