Title: Internet in the Houston region
Post by: Boedha on October 12, 2008, 06:19:11 AM
So,

My parents recently moved to Kingwood, north-east of Houston. Quite the adventure as 50-something Europeans. I noticed some of you guys live in the region and since they, and I, know next to nothing about internet providers in the US, I was wondering if I could get some pointers? They already have a cable modem from a previous place they stayed. So, what are their options? Is comcast any good?

Comcast is horrible but odds are your options are limited. I'm sure someone knows everything available though.

I personally prefer Comcast, as I don't have to worry about PPoE and signing on or the other crap.  I plug my router into my cable modem and I am done.  They provided mine, so I don't know how their system handles things if you use your own.  Comcast can be good here, surprisingly.  My connection has been great.  In Kingwood it should be fine as it's one of our ritzy suburbs.

The only other real option is AT&T.  Some of my friends like their U-Verse package.

Any other provider such as Earthlink goes through Comcast.  It's only worth it if they are offering a substantial discount, and then it will depend upon the provider and you have to deal with two companies should anything go wrong.

I've got AT&T U-verse in dallas/fort worth, and it's great, far better service than we ever got from Time Warner.

My only complaint is really on the cable tv side, you can only pause/rewind/record on one box, although you can watch recorded stuff on any box in the house.  Aside from that, it's great.

Ok, thanks for the info!
They'll probably end up with comcast then, I have absolutely no trust in them as far as configuring modems and such. :)

Depends on what providers actually service their area, and it may not always be a choice between two, and many places only have one provider service them IF ANY.

Try this site: http://www.whitefence.com enter their street address and zipcode, and the providers it shows are the ones you can "choose" from.

I'm betting it's exactly like 80% of the rest of Texas and there's only AT&T DSL (through what used to be Southern Bell), and TV through satellite.
