Title: For those Attending Blizzcon: Diablo 3 Warning
Post by: schild on October 10, 2008, 06:09:50 AM
It's going to be playable.

Feel free to discuss it, but please, no spoilers for the game itself, if the demo/playable has any.

Mechanics, classes, how far along in development, fine.

But no spoilers, not even item sets. Let other sites ruin that shit. Thx!

Uh, would it be ok for them to put it in Spoiler tags?

No, because I won't be able to restrain myself.

No need to call me irrational, I fucking know it.

Well looks like at least one new class is mentioned and it is the wizard. Not a huge suprise I figured they would have a wizard or sorc type class pure magic big boomy character.

After finding out that Blizzard had as long as they did to come up with classes and they came up with THE WIZARD, my feelings for the game have hit rock bottom.

Fuck them in their uncreative sphincter.

Wait... I haven't been following Diablo 3 because I have nothing but scorn for its gameplay these days. But is it seriously going to be on consoles? REALLY?

My god, I can't wait until the Diablo 3 fans get the game in their grubby little hands and have a collective coronary over its "consolization."

I wouldn't.  You know they would slow it down and add useless bullshit for all the mouth-breathers.  You know it deep in your heart that this is what they would do.

Also: I'm fairly indifferent about the wizard.  I'm kind of interested to see where it fits in the Diablo lore, but altogether I can't really judge it until I can play it, though the name is almost as vanilla as Mage.

The Amazon was just a rehash of the Rogue. That's why Diablo 2 tanked so hard and Blizzard went out of business in the 90's.

We have 4 WoW accounts in this house, each with BC and each will get WOTLK too. Blizzard sussed out me and my money a long fucking time ago :/  The only thing that will put me off Diablo 3 is a monthly fee, at least until I'm fit enough to earn some sodding money anyway :p

Ah well, I don't really give a shit about RTS in general or Starcraft in particular.

Back in the day I played SC1's human campaign until I got to some mission where I had to fight other humans on some kind of floating space platform, but they kept nuking me before I had a chance to do jack shit. That was the end of my SC fun, and also my SC experience. I did spend AU$20 to get the Battle Pack about 6 months ago, since that original copy was a pirated one. I still haven't opened that BP of course, but now I no longer eye them off in the game shops when they're heavily discounted.

Yea, the 'pay 3x for the one game' thing they've done with Star2 has me puzzled. I realise "episodic content" is the new zoot suit, but honestly, do they really need the money that badly?

With the single-player portions of StarCraft 2 now split into three distinct games, Blizzard lead producer Chris Sigaty has revealed that the individual titles could be released a year or more apart from one another.

Someone failed episodic game design.

Though if we use the game trilogy rule, it means terrans will be playable, and the other episodes will be scrapped.

It's Blizzard!

If he's hinting at a year apart, it could be two years apart each.

As an aside, do I smell the "Annual Franchise" taint of Blizzard's Activision Overlords?

Starcraft 1 was shit anyhow.  Command & Conquer Red Alert was the Win 98 RTS of choice.

Let Blizzard think their success gives them the right to skullfuck their customers.  They will reap what they sow.

That being said I would so wear that Diablo 3 shirt, provided there is something snarky on the back.

Like:

"This is Hell for your average teenage boy or neckbearded manchild."
                                    "COMING XX XXX XXXX"

Title: Re: For those Attending Blizzcon: Diablo 3 Warning
Post by: ahoythematey on October 13, 2008, 04:34:34 PM
It doesn't need anything on the back, considering that it's an injoke that you either would definitely get or not know anything about and not find funny beyond maybe the "looniness factor".  Putting that terrible line on the back would detract from it.

Title: Re: For those Attending Blizzcon: Diablo 3 Warning
Post by: Jain Zar on October 13, 2008, 08:08:22 PM
AoE 2 was awesome as all get out, but it was a couple years after them both IIRC.
(IMHO once the expansion came out it became nearly perfect as far as an RTS can get.  Though I still think RA has a better interface overall.)

It does however make Starcraft's continued popularity look even worse though.

And its Korea's opinion that Starcraft is.  Doesn't mean I give a fuck.
The most important (or at least it should be the most important) opinion to me is my own.
And thus Starcraft can go eat a fat dick because its not fun.  The interface is poor, the design is weak, the gameplay is plodding and dull.

The most fun I've had with an RTS was AOE2. I enjoy being able to build up an impenetrable base and playing indefinitely in one game.

Starcraft bored me on the computer, but I played it a ton on the 64 with friends.

Of course each campaign will come with new units and tweaks that you need for multiplayer. Yes, I'm aware they said they wouldn't do that but of course they will. Expansion comes out, it has new units, obviously people want to play them in multiplayer and obviously you'll need the game for that. It's a stealth subscriber model.

The idea that you need three different games for three different single-player campaigns is just ludicrous. That's more single-player Starcraft than anyone needs and we're talking Starcraft, not Nabokov.

I hate hate hate it when companies are talking trilogies before they even put out the first title. Rarely ends well - counting your chickens before they're hatched and all that. Instead of grand scheme for a breakfast cereal, a card game and a set of bedsheets just make a single good game.

<derail>
Anyone else ever get into Myth (The Fallen Lords, not Myst the tedious photo puzzle games)? Was pure small-unit tactics, like Ground Effect, i.e. no base building or unit production, just take a bunch of dwarves, barbarians, spellcasters, bowman etc into a map and try not to let the bloody dwarves kill to many of your own units.

Loved those games, had serious multiplayer potential but nobody I knew at the time liked it and the multiplayer community dwindled to a few diehard Mac users pretty fast.

And would that still count as an RTS or would you call it a different genre entirely or just a subset of RTSs?
