Title: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Mrbloodworth on October 02, 2008, 01:31:04 PM Quote from: Mark Jacobs Folks, Obviously one of the things that players want us to improve is our chat system. We are currently in the process of doing a revision on it but before we go too far, I'm interested in hearing what you want to see in it. So, please use this thread for suggestions for what you'd like to see in a new and improved chat system from us. Please keep the thread on topic and I will not respond to any questions on this thread other than ones that pertain to chat. Also, please don't turn this thread into a "My idea is better than yours" thread as that really isn't helpful. So, if you have some things you would like to see in our chat system, let me know. Oh, and you don't need to suggest item-linking in chat, it's already on our list. Mark Link to thread (http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1880367) My response: "Please see all other Modern MMO's, Case in point, LOTRO." Nothing else, at all, matters. I disagree. That's a big one (should have been there), but things like interacting with names by right clicking (and a report gold spam ALA:LOTRO) are much needed. Sure, but the thing is, I don't want them worrying about anything besides item-linking, everything else is of minor importance compared to actual game issues. I understand different people work on different things, but don't publicize the minutiae like this, in the grand scheme of things, it just doesn't matter. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Ingmar on October 02, 2008, 01:38:36 PM Right-click interaction is just as, if not more vital than item linking IMO. (And item linking is vital.)

I hear ya, but its not to much to ask for a chat system that is up to current "standards*".....is it? I honestly think its funny hes even asking... I would wager, having never played, DAOC has a more "Standard" Chat system. Making /reply work correctly, would be a start :why_so_serious: *Standards: Though not defined, we all know there is common features across all MMO's, and things that should be Standard. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: schild on October 02, 2008, 01:46:55 PM /reply works fine for me. Also, standards? What the fuck are standards? This is the MMORPG market, where programmers create the oldest bugs in the newest ways. And designers ignore the oldest rules. Blah blah etc etc.

I haven't used it to day (post-patch) but, uh, reply was sending tells to the last person YOU sent a tell to, not the last one to send you a tell. :why_so_serious: Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: fuser on October 02, 2008, 01:51:25 PM * loot linkage
* make the tab alert(flash the tab name) on private message I'd say there's just too much chatter in the main window, that's all. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Hawkbit on October 02, 2008, 01:54:45 PM More default windows would be nice, so all my personal chat is in one area (guild/tells/say) and the other chat is in another window. Yes, I can set this up myself. But it always seems to change itself when I log off and I can never remember what I set it to before. It needs to be more intuitive and less text spammy.
Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Mrbloodworth on October 02, 2008, 01:57:17 PM I would recommend, that if you have true suggestions, post them there. If you really care to be heard.

It needs to be more intuitive and less text spammy. Thank you, this is it! Right now its the broken EQ2 system before it was all fixed up to remember settings. The options are there but it keeps breaking on me :( Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Cylus on October 02, 2008, 06:15:56 PM Have an alliance channel for each teir. If by alliance channel, you mean a server-wide Order/Destro channel: Seconded. Should consider both Tier'd and a non-Tier'd one for folks that play alts if they can't find any RvR.Ignore limit may need to be raised dramatically for that, though. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Righ on October 02, 2008, 09:55:36 PM He got the only thing it's missing, item-linking. Nothing else, at all, matters. Pfft. Just incorporate all of IRC, so that we can create our own channels, set operator privs, boot miscreants, and dcc send lewts. You could probably reuse 95% of the code that somebody else wrote. that is all. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Triforcer on October 03, 2008, 12:18:30 AM A chat command that nerfs the BW's dot line for every BW in the game. That comes under the heading of "chat system," right?

Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Azazel on October 03, 2008, 02:41:13 AM My favorite post from that thread:
Quote Summarizing every post before this one with: 1-Buy World of Warcraft. 2-install game 3-load game 4-look at chat menu 5-duplicate chat menu 6-finish. There now you can get to work on what were already obvious features people would want from 2 years ago. :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Koyasha on October 03, 2008, 02:59:11 AM Feh, World of Warcraft has a pretty limited chat system and the custom channels are downright horrible. Not a good place to point people for that. Try City of Heroes or EQ2. Maybe LOTRO, I don't recall the chat system cause I didn't meet anyone worth talking to in my time playing it and didn't come with friends (which is probably the main reason I didn't even play the full duration of the free trial).
Although the above comment of 'duplicate all of IRC' would be quite effective and I have little doubt it would be reasonably simple to do, too. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Hawkbit on October 03, 2008, 06:10:55 AM What about a series of predefined user settings that are set up as profiles that you can set a window to? like...
Lootwhore: enables all the spam text from items and coin into chat or Chatty Cathy: enables only guild/warband/alliance/say/party, but leaves out emotes and monster say. Predefined. But make up a bunch of them so we have a series of profiles to use. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: bhodikhan on October 03, 2008, 06:17:33 AM I want to know where someone is. In WOW you shift-click the name and it shows their location, rank, and class. Great for heading over to a group.
I also want to right-click and get a menu. IGNORE | ADD FRIEND | REPORT SPAM | INVITE etc. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Nija on October 03, 2008, 06:45:14 AM There needs to be a MOTD that lists active channels that you can join. There should be a couple active, default channels that exist. Stuff like T2RVR, T2Keeps.
Oh, hey, how about some official fucking forums to help with community? I hate having to look at my 'server board' in 4 goddamn locations. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Numtini on October 03, 2008, 07:37:43 AM Right click menus with open api
Linkable objects Default channels by tier (open party system isn't really a success) Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: slog on October 03, 2008, 07:52:09 AM Why wouldn't he just copy WoW's? No need to reinvent the wheel (besides EGO I guess)
Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Lakov_Sanite on October 03, 2008, 07:54:14 AM Why wouldn't he just copy WoW's? No need to reinvent the wheel (besides EGO I guess) Warhammer took the wheel and added big pointy spikes to it thinking that it would make it mare hardcore, turns out wheels with big pointy spikes don't roll well....but they look awesome! Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Righ on October 03, 2008, 08:33:33 AM There needs to be a MOTD that lists active channels that you can join. That would be /list [<channel pattern> <server>] as defined in RFC 1459. The MOTD command is in RFC 2812. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... The following client changes have been made, these changes will take effect once you run the patcher (if currently in game you will have to log out and re-run the patcher if you are experiencing these issues) * Pressing ‘R’ will once again cause players to begin a reply to the last player who sent them a /tell * Chat font settings will now once again save properly upon relogging. * User settings for graphical options will now save properly * Basic chat functionality (/tell, /send, /p, /g, etc.) will now work more reliably As always we're continuing to make your game experience even better each day, have fun! Post by: Seanzor on October 03, 2008, 11:55:19 AM - Item linking: hell, even the game my sig rails on had this, and that game had the chat system used in the MMO we'll all be playing in hell.
- Some kind of public communication outside your guild/party/alliance/warband. I'm looking, specifically at /1 /2 etc... While this technically exists, there is no global chat channel of any kind, and it seems like the number of people you can reach with /1 could be counted on one hand. Y'know, just the stuff that any idiot would a least know to automatically put in a chat system. Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: Hayduke on October 03, 2008, 12:10:22 PM It'd be cool to have cross server chat, but I can't see it as a high priority. The major faults in the chat system are pretty apparent, I don't know why MJ had to ask for feedback. I guess it's just good PR.
Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: tazelbain on October 03, 2008, 12:19:00 PM >I don't know why MJ had to ask for feedback.
Plausable deniablity for when they blatantly rip off WoW's chat system? Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: schild on October 03, 2008, 12:37:29 PM That's not why. It's so he can focus our anger while they fix things that weren't done at launch. The chat system really isn't that bad, just needs item linking.
Title: Re: MJ wants to know what you want in a chat system....... Post by: UnSub on October 04, 2008, 02:53:37 AM WAR really should have had a beta to answer questions like that.
Part of me wants to shade this statement in green and with smileys. The part that wanted it left white won. |
