Title: "Project V13" (AKA: FALLOUT MMO!)
Post by: Mrbloodworth on September 25, 2008, 08:22:39 AM
Quote
The company also announced that Chris Taylor, a game designer who was a part of the original Fallout game development team at Interplay in 1994, has rejoined the company. Taylor will serve as Lead System Designer for “Project V13,” the working title of Interplay’s next generation Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) currently in development. Taylor joins other original Fallout team members on staff at Interplay’s internal game studio, which recently opened an office in Irvine, Calif. Additional development staff members continue to be hired as the project ramps-up.

Why didn't you just make the title Fallout MMO? Comeon now.

That said, I hope they don't try to follow in Bethsofts footsteps even if Fallout 3 turns out awesome.

I wonder when they'll finally get around to hiriing a programmer for the project.

When they get funding to pay for it, I imagine. It's not the programmers that're expensive anyway, it's all the artists.

Interplay also holds exclusive distribution rights to certain existing Fallout and Redneck titles.

Did the titles make that much money? All I think seeing that in a press release is the Top Gear American episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2syY12OPkwI#t=3m30s).

If Interplay / Masthead have started on Project V13, then that might be enough for Interplay to keep the license. Interplay has been saying they've been in pre-production for about six months.

Of course, it could all be a bid to hold onto the IP for a while longer.

Anderson was the creative director on the project prior to leaving to join inExile.  When the creative director (and one of the creators of Fallout) quietly jumps ship it suggests forward progress is not being made on the project.

It was working yesterday. I would assume the load from having to serve the "Web site" as a single gigantic Flash app blew things up on their end.

Clicked on it,
went to the toilet,
took a pretty big dump,
came back and saw it was at 42%.
In fact it's still loading now ...

Is it some sort of a simulation of what the internet will be like after the nuclear holocaust hits?

It's a sign when your website loads slower than the game it's advertising.

Mostly it's a sign that no matter how cool you thought the idea was, it didn't need to be ONE GIANT GODDAMNED FLASH APP.

edit: it finally loaded. What is this, a fucking social experiment?

ALL THAT GODAWFUL SLOW FLASH APP DOES IS DISPLAY A STATIC IMAGE AND TAKES YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS FOR THEIR MAILING LIST, THEN REDIRECTS TO INTERPLAY'S FORUMS.

What the unholy shit is in that app that takes so long to load for one, and for two WHY IS YOUR DUMB WEB FORM A FLASH APP.

It's slow on purpose.  Most people experience slow load time and occasionally someone loads normally to lure the unsuspecting.  They're seeing how much interest is in a Fallout MMO and this data is determined by seeing how long the average person is willing to wait to see this "new info"

Digging this thread out again...

There's apparently been a settlement between Bethseda and Interplay. (http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/bethesda-vs-interplay-case-finally-settled/)

No details yet, but soon, probably.

Side note: I like the abbreviation for Fallout Online as FOOL (on the Duck and Cover link). It just works.

So the details of the settlement are out, and...

Interplay's lost the MMO to Bethsoft. (http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/09/bethesda-and-interplay-settle-fallout-mmo-lawsuits-interplays/)

Quote
Bethesda announced that "under the terms of the settlement, the license granted to Interplay to develop the Fallout MMO is null and void, and all rights granted to Interplay to develop a Fallout MMO revert back to Bethesda, effective immediately."

Incidentally, Interplay's lost the rights to the Fallout back catalogue as well; they can continue to publish FO1, 2, and Tactics until Dec. 2013, at which point they fall under Bethsoft's purview.

I assume pretty much anyone on these forums who has ever had the slightest interest in Fallout probably owns the old games, but if you don't I'd probably GOG them up before their status there becomes iffy.

Other sources mention Bethesda agreed to give Interplay $2million, and each pays their own court costs.

The one guy I know at BGS is cheering, he thought it'd take a lot more to get Interplay to fuck off.

I'm not in the know, but I thought the Interplay of today is not the same as the Interplay of old? As in, studio was bought up -> internal studios were shut down & staff laid off -> eventually Interplay itself was shut down and then re-born from the ashes or something. Or am I mistaken on that point?

As I understand it (disclosure, wife works for Zenimax but not in a department that's involved with any of this), Interplay got the licence for a Fallout MMO back in 2003-4 contingent on them actually making one. There were deliverables and milestones to be reached that would demonstrate that they were actually working on it otherwise the licence defaulted back to Bethesda. Zenimax claim that Interplay hasn't kept their end of the deal; Interplay counter-claim that Bethesda is acting in bad faith because it wants to pull the licence back and a lot of lawyers buy Bentleys for Christmas.

Title: Re: "Project V13" (AKA: FALLOUT MMO!)
Post by: Modern Angel on January 10, 2012, 09:17:47 AM
Do you think that Bethesda was actually working in bad faith? That seems awfully flimsy to me... how does Bethesda working in bad faith (assuming they are) affect your milestones? Did they withhold money or something?

Interplay was really just one asshole trying to hold onto the name and the IP despite having run the company into the fucking ground over 8 years ago. They made great games at one point, but that point has long ago passed. When the company went tits up, I think he might have sold off the IP rights for a song, then regretted it and reconstituted Interplay as a zombie dev house before finally announcing a Fallout MMO then delivering nothing more than a few emails over the ensuring 8 years.

Interplay is now well and truly dead with about $2 million (minus lawyer's fees) in this guy's pocket.

That is about what I had understood as well. Last I heard Interplay had three employees, the owner and two part time staffers. It was all about milking the IP.

In 2001, French publisher Titus Interactive completed its acquisition of majority control of Interplay. Immediately afterwards, they shed most of its publisher functions and signed a long-term agreement by which Vivendi Universal would publish Interplay's games. Founder Brian Fargo eventually departed as Titus had changed Interplay's main focus from PC Gaming to Console Gaming.[7] However, Titus went through financial and legal difficulties, culminating in a close of business in 2005 after unsuccessfully trying to sell Interplay. Titus left many of its employees, both local and the international wholly owned developers, without redundancy or owed back-pay, and left creditors with large debts. Titus CEO Herve Caen then assumed the same capacity at Interplay.

Yeah, that's the part I'm thinking of. Herve Caen, complete cocksucker.

Yeah, this dude is insisting that Bethesda is a big bad and Interplay was so close to having their shit together if it wasn't for this motivationless crime. I'd press things further but since I'm doing some freelance work for him I'm going to tie my hands to the chair in order to restrain myself.

Even if I grant that Bethesda was trying to box in Interplay, the bringing in a subcontractor in an explicitly no subcontractors contract really can't be laid at Bethesda's feet.

I worked for a studio owned by Titus in the late 90s. It was quite amusing after quitting watching them fly the company (subsidiaries and all) into the ground. I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop like this for like 10 years.

Interplay was really just one asshole trying to hold onto the name and the IP despite having run the company into the fucking ground over 8 years ago.
