Title: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Broughden on September 17, 2008, 11:26:12 PM Heading to Seattle friday afternoon. Going to spend this weekend and next in the city/Olympic Peninsula/Ranier and the week in between paddling the San Juan islands with a NOLS course on LNT practices.
Anyone in the area? Any weather updates? Any great new restaurants we should try? Any other tips or tricks you wish to pass along? I lived in the area (Fort Lewis) some years ago and used to spend my Thursday nights downtown at the Oz dance club. But its been years and years (Pearl Jam was still a bar band) since I have been there. So any updates will be appreciated. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Oz on September 18, 2008, 06:43:38 AM I was just in Seattle over labor day weekend. I recomend eating at the 5 Spot, but you probably already know that. I liked the downtown one that features Coastal Cities food.
Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: TheWalrus on September 18, 2008, 07:26:33 AM Weathers sposed to be shitty this weekend. Grats.
I'm not in seattle, but if you don't hit up Ivars once you're a loser. If you're driving up here, be aware we just passed a hand free law, so don't hold your cell to your ear and drive 85. They'll be looking for you. WAP can probably help you out here more than me. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: WayAbvPar on September 18, 2008, 10:48:59 AM Haven't been to many of the new upscale places, but I know a couple of gems if you are interesting in bar/bistro/casual dining.
Bad Albert's (http://www.badalberts.com/) in Ballard has fantastic food; recommend the Dock Street Burger, the Chicken Parmagiana, the Cajun Crawfish, and just about anything on their breakfast menu (served until 2 on weekends). Peso's (http://seattle.citysearch.com/profile/10787182) is at the foot of Queen Anne Hill just north of dowtown/Belltown. Haven't found anything on the menu I dislike yet; but happy hours is the best time to come; lots of cheap small dishes so you can try all kinds of stuff (tapas style). Took Sauced and voodoolily here when Bad Albert's was closed, so you can get further reviews from them. Sport (http://www.sportrestaurant.com/) is a master chef's version of a sports bar. Plasma TVs everywhere, and the food is outstanding. If you like spicy, try the Diablo Bites, but make sure to have a full beer waiting. SOOOO tasty, but hot as hell. Trotski has been there a few more times than I have, so maybe he could elaborate. Tom Douglas (http://www.tomdouglas.com/) is Seattle's Iron Chef competitor. I have been to all his places save the bakery and new pizza place. I liked Etta's the best, but all his food is good. Save room for the coconut cream pie. I am not a huge dessert fan, but that stuff is worth it. If you end up in Port Townsend (NE tip of Olympic Peninsula), look for Lanza's (http://www.igougo.com/dining-reviews-b148478-Port_Townsend-Lanzas_Ristorante.html). My wife and I stumbled onto it a few years ago. Fantastic little Italian place. Come by the tailgating section between Qwest Field and the viaduct Sunday morning and I will drink a beer or twelve with ya  Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Engels on September 18, 2008, 06:07:37 PM Dragonfish Cafe (http://www.dragonfishcafe.com/) for dinner/lunch
Taste of India (http://www.tasteofindiaseattle.com/home/index.html) for dinner That is all. Oh, and its clouding over, it'll probably rain all weekend. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Broughden on September 19, 2008, 08:24:17 AM Thanks for all the suggestions! We are writing them all down now. As for the rain, I was hoping it would be beautiful as its my wife's first time in the PNW but what is Seattle with out the rain.
WAP...would love to meet up and have a beer or twelve. Would be my first time meeting anyone from F13. I will shoot you a PM to get in touch with me. We have this weekend and next to explore. This weekend we will probably be stopping by Saturday at the West Coast Kayak Symposium and checking out what is new in the industry. Then during the week we will be out on the water in the Puget Sound. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: naum on September 19, 2008, 10:57:16 AM Do a cruise — to Vancouver Island if you have all day+ to spare or just the bay and Lake Washington…
Lots of seafood joints (upscale or fish/sea critters in a basket) along the shore… Check out Pike's Place Market… The obligatory/touristy Space Needle tour… Catch a Thunderbirds hockey game (oh wait, not for another month or so…) Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: WayAbvPar on September 19, 2008, 11:35:42 AM Opening night is tonight in Prince George; home opener isn't until October 4th. They have heavily backloaded their schedule to get most of their home dates in after they move to Kent at the end of December (CAN'T WAIT!!!).

When are they coming up here to admire the Giant's WHL and Memorial Cup banners? Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: WayAbvPar on September 19, 2008, 01:59:06 PM Don't make me post the Canucks roster for the year. It would probably make us both cry.
Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Stewie on September 23, 2008, 02:27:07 PM As bad as the Canucks may be (although i think they will be ok) they are better than the "we have 1 top 6 forward and he is Nik Antropov" Toronto Maple Leafs.
Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Oz on September 24, 2008, 06:37:45 AM Quote The obligatory/touristy Space Needle tour… You know...the wife and i didn't do this when we were there. We did do the underground Seattle tour which was awesome. Wish we could have done the "adults" only tour but we missed it. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: WayAbvPar on September 24, 2008, 03:33:24 PM As bad as the Canucks may be (although i think they will be ok) they are better than the "we have 1 top 6 forward and he is Nik Antropov" Toronto Maple Leafs. Just being in the same conversation as the Leafs makes me weep. I went up in the Space Needle about 30 years ago when so relatives from Montana were in town. It was pretty cool, actually. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Broughden on September 29, 2008, 11:44:28 AM Well we made it home safe and sound last night. Didnt end up meeting up with WAP, which I am actually pretty disapointed about. He would have been the first F13 person I have ever met IRL during my time here in the forums.
Anyway the trip was amazing. My wife had a blast! It was her first time doing more than 2 nights in the woods and she was great. Her hasbrowns and garlic while we were on our kayak trip were pretty memorable. She absolutely loved the PNW as I knew she would and cant wait to return to climb both Baker and Rainier on our next trip....so Jay (WAP) hopefully we can meet up then! Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Broughden on September 29, 2008, 01:23:16 PM Quote Her hasbrowns and garlic while we were on our kayak trip were pretty memorable. Is that a Euphemism? :awesome_for_real: hehe no. We slept in 3-4 man tents so guys had one tent and girls another. She and I could have slept together under a cooking tarp to keep the rain off but as the only couple we didnt want to alieanate ourselves from the group. She actually cooked some amazing hasbrowns with sauteed garlic and melted jack cheese over the camp stove our lats morning. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Engels on September 29, 2008, 01:25:09 PM Nice photos, Broughden. Sorry I was antisocial and didn't make any noises about hooking up or anything...maybe next time!
Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: Broughden on September 29, 2008, 09:54:12 PM Nice photos, Broughden. Sorry I was antisocial and didn't make any noises about hooking up or anything...maybe next time! No problems. My wife and I are spending a month in the Wind River Range next summer (getting our wilderness EMT certs) and a month in Alaska (2 weeks backpacking and 2 weeks seakayaking), both with the NOLS program. My point? On our way to or home from Alaska we will probably stop in Seattle to climb either Rainier or Baker or both. We could definitely all hook up then. Title: Re: Seattle and the San Juans Post by: WayAbvPar on October 01, 2008, 01:12:32 PM As long as said meetup is at a bar or restaurant. Mountains are fun to look at, but fuck climbing them. That is way too much work, and too many n00bs get killed doing it around here every year.
