Title: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Draegan on September 11, 2008, 06:49:36 AM I'm about to order new parts for my computer (Basically almost everything) and I'd like to some one to double check my choices. It's early in the morning so I need all the help I can get.

On the 500 gig HD I have already; Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Morfiend on September 11, 2008, 10:24:08 AM I would STRONGLY suggest that you wait on the mobo/processor. The new Nehilem chips are going to be hitting the market in a few months, and thats going to change everything. We are talking about a jump like going from p4 to C2D. Everything else will be obsolete.
I want to upgrade also, but I am waiting. Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: rattran on September 11, 2008, 10:32:03 AM Seconded on the 'wait for nehalem/CoreI7 if you can'
And why go crossfire with 2 4850s when you can get a 4870 for about the same price? Some games don't play well with crossfire/sli so you're leaving yourself with a subpar solution for those games, and leaves you with little option for further video upgrades. Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Draegan on September 11, 2008, 10:37:48 AM I can't wait a few months. I'm not concerned about upgrades since there will always be something better.
This should do quite well for now. As far as the video cards, I'm going for the best bang for my buck now. I have a friend with a similar setup and it does wonders for him. Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Draegan on September 11, 2008, 10:39:10 AM dbl post.
Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Morfiend on September 11, 2008, 10:42:23 AM Dont say we didnt warn you. The Nehilems are amazing. They are showing up to 30% increase over the top of the line chops right now.
Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Draegan on September 11, 2008, 10:51:41 AM Well if Warhammer or whatever I'm playing at the time is killing what Im getting I'll upgrade then.
I don't need to be top of the line. Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Trippy on September 11, 2008, 03:07:41 PM Only an 80gb hd? I've never seen #'s that made running dual video cards made sense over spending that $$$ on a single card option.
Title: Re: Gutting my Computer Need a 2nd Opinion on Parts Post by: Trippy on September 11, 2008, 08:29:32 PM Dual 4850s is faster and cheaper than a 1 GB 4870 and not that much more expensive than 512 MB 4870.

I haven't heard that passed around as accepted wisdom much tbh. Seems like you might be better off picking up a 4870 and getting another one for CF on the cheap after the next big bad gpu's come out, the 4870 can run damn near anything out right now anyways. Hopefully by then more games can actually use both cards. That's my take. The fact that 4850's are either noisy or run hot as hell and putting two in a case would make me worry as well. |
