He makes whiny, self-indulgent drama pieces with bizarro scifi-fantasy setups or backstories and a continuing story. He basically makes shit with no built in audience. 1. People who watch the scifi stuff get turned off by the soapy drama. 2. People who watch the soapy drama stuff get turned off by the wierdo scifi stuff. I actually liked Dead Like Me, but that was mostly despite itself...... whiny lead character, whiny lead character's parents sort of breaking up, and then throw in the reaping people's souls bit, the whole temp agency bits (which occasionally produce a great moment, but for huge amounts of setup). Throw in some fairly salty language. Mandy Patinkin kept that show on the air as long as it was.
