Title: Re-release of the Kafka-esque be-a-roach game "Bad Mojo
Post by: Sobelius on November 04, 2004, 02:23:58 PM
A re-release of the Kafka-esque be-a-roach game (http://www.gotgameentertainment.com/badmojo/) "Bad Mojo" is forthcoming this month.

I enjoyed the game when it came out back in '96, but never finished it. It never would run under XP, so I started putting together an old system from some work give-away machines (P2 133s) and was looking up the game to see if there were any notes or patches for playing it when LO I ran across the above.

Viva a game where you get to navigate across roach egg casings to get through a 'roach motel' trap, maneuver a cigarette butt to avoid being eaten by a spider, and crawl around the world at a bug's eye level!

One of my all time favorite games.

I mean, you were a roach. That's it. No inventory, no special powers, no leveling up ... and yet, the game was extremely challenging, clever, and had a fascinating storyline.

This was the only game I ever played that literally scared me ... one particular moment that made me jump out of my chair.

Sure, I will buy this again. I'm interested to see how they update it, and I want to support the concept of innovative, original gaming.

That's cute to say, but it's a re-release. I'll be buying this as I played the first but never caught it in stores. But ya know, it's double dipping no matter how you slice it.

Even if it's a re-release, that means it's a game that's been made twice.

How many times have most games we play been made?  A dozen or so?

I apologize ... I said something positive without a trace of sarcasm or cynicism. I certainly broke the cardinal rule of these boards.

We can toss this ball around for days. Katamari Damacy on it's first release is original. If they release #2, sure, I'll buy it - but it won't be original. Not even remotely.

Same goes for this. I don't know why you're being a jackass.

We're all sado-masochists. We do at least recognize it when we see a rehash of something. Though we'll allow our eyes to become all rosey for things like World of Warcraft. Well, some of us will...

By "original", I meant "unique", "inventive", "maverick". I believe you can apply this label fairly to Bad Mojo, whether the game is 6 years old or repackaged for a new generation of wannabe roaches.

Not original in the sense that it's brand new, never been seen before.

I guess I just get sick of people parsing one word out of a post and pissing all over it. Oh, and I'm always a jackass.

Every board has it's problem. You just defined ours. At least we can agree it was a great game. Most other places people would have no clue what you were talking about.

Fear not. Gaming heaven occurs in t-minus 5 days and lasts for 3 months.

$20 is an attractive price tag.   I'll wait for the demo, though.   Or maybe I'll just lapse into a "who am I kidding, I don't have time for yet another game" mentality.

Semantics semantics semantics!

Kafka is cool. It will be interesting just to see how surreal it is.

Picked it up a couple of weeks ago and finished it pretty quickly. Amazes me how a game with such simple mechanics -- move one of 4 directions -- can manage to be so engrossing.

Not a particularly difficult adventure game, but the combination of story, graphics, sound and animation > most of today's shiney.

The Bonus DVD gives some amusing background into it's development. (But did I really need to know that they maintained a cockroach terrarium that started with 12 roaches and had over 100,000 within a year? Or that they used a real rat, freshly killed, for some of the rat visuals? Of course I did!)

Best $20 I've spent on a game recently, even it is a re-release...
