Title: Hello Kitty - The MMOG
Post by: SirBruce on November 03, 2004, 05:08:12 PM
The end times are nigh.  Red Sox win the World Series, George W. Bush is re-elected, and Sanrio announces a Hello Kitty MMOG:

The masochistic side of me wants to play this game so I buy a house and decorate it with a Titanic movie poster.

The homicidal side of me wants to murder you and decorate my house with your hide.

I've seen plenty of female adults walking around with Hello Kitty paraphernalia. One of my coworkers at my previous job had all sorts of Hello Kitty items decorating her cube and she was in her early 30s. In fact some women are so enamored with Hello Kitty products that Sanrio came out with the Hello Kitty vibrator, which apparently is a collector's item now since they are no longer being made. I would not be surprised if Hello Kitty Online becomes the game to play for Japanese female gamers looking for a social game -- i.e. the kind of game EA was originally hoping The Sims Online would turn into.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a box of Hello Kitty moon pies at the local Japanese market.  I had a craving for moon pies the day before and wasn't planning on buying any, but when I saw the pink box at the store and it was SO adorable, I just had to buy it.

I look forward to grinding up my avatar's cuteness skills. And dressing them in primary colours.

Words would fail me, except that I can't get the image of Bruce playing this game trolling for cyber-poon out of my head.

I long for Drano.

These Sanrio characters are the only ones not controlable by you. They are the main theme and "God" of one Nation. For example, in Hello Kitty World, Hello Kitty reigns supreme as the overseer of the land. With her guidance, love and happiness is abound and people are able to live in the cute land of Kitty Kingdom in Hello Kitty World...

This sounds like the scariest goddamn place ever.

From conception to porn star, you decide all the roads your cute androgenous pet can take.

Ya know. This game is so fucked up it may just be worth playing.

Do they even show Hello Kitty in the US anymore?  I've never seen an episode.

As for the MMORPG - meh, whatever.   If I've learned anything from the MMORPGs I've seen come and go over the last decade, it's not the licence, it's how they use it.

One advantage with kids-oriented MMORPGs is that they are simplified to the point of throwing out the "non-fun" excess. This is why a jaded gamer can find comfort in the cooperative gameplay of Toontown, for instance. Maybe Hello Kitty will be the Toontown of isometrics, or the kiddy Ultima Online?

(It has been pointed out before: City of Heroes is Toontown for teens/adults, in case you hadn't noticed. And the only way not to notice is not to have played one or either of the two.)

Hey baby you're a sweet young thing,
Still tied to Mommy's apron strings,
I don't even dare to ask your age,
It's enough to know you're here backstage,
You're Jailbait, and I just can't wait,
Jailbait baby come on

One look baby, all I need,
My decision made at lightning speed,
I don't even want to know your name,
It's enough to know you feel the same,
You're Jailbait, and I just can't wait,
Jailbait baby come on

Hey babe you know you look so fine,
Send shivers up and down my spine,
I don't care about our different ages,
I'm an open book with well thumbed pages,
You're Jailbait, and I just can't wait,
Jailbait baby come on

If they add PvP and rocket propelled grenades it could be an instant success.

Either that or their marketing could tout it as having massively multiplayer pussy interaction.

Perhaps they went the other way (http://www.ucomics.com/foxtrot/2004/11/05/)?
