Title: Do we have any "collector's" here?
Post by: schild on August 17, 2008, 12:37:33 AM
This has been bothering me for a while. I know I'm a collector - from old to new, big box to small box, rare, common, whatever. Every format every type. Good games are good games, sure - but collections are something else. As such, I want to start a thread, THIS ONE, for people that Collect gaming shit, whether it be peripheral to gaming or gaming itself. Mostly because the collection is an important part of the hobby for me - call it a catalog of entertainment (much like I do with DVDs and some genres of music). As such, am I alone in this or are there others, folks who want to trade, etc.

I'm guilty of being a collector.  My passion for it has definitely waned this past year (joblessness).  It was of course easier when I worked game store retail in the 90's.  Most of my obscure stuff is on the NEO-GEO, SNES, and Saturn.  I've got an original Viewpoint cart for the GEO.  Zaxxon who?

Don't laugh at my Virtua Boy.

Yes we do, MMO's, trilogies on DVD/BR mainly, RPG's and such. Also try to buy collectors edition of every game worth it just to have the CE box + stash.

I assume we're talking about AES and not MVS? I mean, if you're jobless, there's a prime market for that shit right now. Hell, even for MVS. I made a rack off of some MVS stuff I picked up cheap.

Yeah, the home console, cartridges.  I didn't/don't have an MVS cabinet setup.  They would have been  cheaper for sure, but don't look as good on a bookshelf.  I could sell things like World Heroes Jet, but could never part with the Shodowns, or the Windjammers of the lot.  I figured the price would drop on the old geo games.  What about SEGA-32X stuff  :awesome_for_real: ?  Probably still worthless price-wise.  VF1 wasn't half bad though.

I think I have almost every Jaguar and Jaguar CD game.

Remember when SEGA carts came with fruit-rollups inside?  Some of my cases still smell like raspberry.

In an anal spell, and replaced my genesis boxes with the larger, blockier, sturdier EA boxes (just swap inserts).  They looked better on the shelf, but I guess lose the original casing $$.  Once SEGA started publishing using the red-insert scheme, the cases got better.  Gunstar Heroes, Dr. Robotnix Mean Bean, Eternal Champions era cases.  I stuck with those.

I keep the cardboard SNES boxes pristine, packed away.  The carts are stacked in a case, so I don't have to manhandle the boxes every time I get an itch to play Shadowrun or Ogre Battle or whatever... Which isn't very often.

Yeah, I guess I am a collector.

Yeah, I collect a lot of games. I collect just games I like, but I have lots. I have a decent MD collection and PSX collection. I also have the 4 slot neo and like 40 something carts.

I don't know how I'd categorize myself... everything I buy, I have the intention of playing, I couldn't care less about original boxes, resale value, etc. Still, I am trying to assemble a personal cream of the crop collection across different platforms. Maybe I'd consider myself a collector of consoles. Were I to have the disposable income and the space for display, I probably would have one of every major platform set up to play.

No, you're not alone...I used to collect PnP RPGs, and not necessarily stuff that had 'value'. I think, by the time I was done, I had about 700 pounds of 'em. And I go by pounds because I had to decide whether to move that shit or sell it off when I finally got past my post-college-starving-artist phase.
As far as electronic gaming, I used to purchase a lot, but not to the point of what I would call collecting.

I sort of collect ps2 games.  I have a rather large library and am especially happy with my Atlus and NISA stuff.  I don't care about modern stuff though, I actually just traded $248 worth of 360 and ps3 games in recently.

I amass lots of different stuff, but the guy I split the house with is a pretty serious collector of old systems. I mean, I've got my Saturn, Genesis, Megadrive, a couple Dreamcasts and a ps3. He has everything back to a 1971 pong game, a working Vectrex and an original Odyssey. And pretty much everything after.

Plus most of the stuff I've gotten over the years I lose interest and sell at a profit eventually.

I'm always collecting something or other.  Used to be coins, then comics, then anime DVDs.  I'm still into figures and figurines.  My last big kick was clothing to redo my wardrobe.  I force myself to limit whatever my current obsession is though, as I don't have the space or money to let myself buy useless crap all the time.

My collection has taken a beating over the years, so my old stuff is pretty much gone.  My NES and SNESes don't work, and I generally don't have boxes for anything anymore.  Strazos was going to send me a Final Fantasy III US box he had but that never happened, although I think my Super Metroid box has survived.  The bulk of my extant collection is my PS2 library.  I am the only person I know with an eReader card.

I'm a collector at heart, but I can't seem to stick with it.  I've had several successful collections, but always end up selling them all when their market peaks.  I guess I'm always looking for the next best thing.

I'm impressed that Schild has stuck with it through all of the recent moves.  Moving always makes me want to liquidate everything.

I have an entire room full of D&D stuff basically. However I am not a 'keep it in plastic' sort of guy. Everything I have has been used (if it doesn't suck too much to use.)

Amen. Moving sucks, and when I have to do it, all my stuff starts looking like it could fit in a dumpster.

This is but a TEENY portion of my RPG collection.
Hell, it aint even all my pre D20 (D20: When you want to ruin D&D in all new and exciting ways from the old D&D flaws without any of that silly charm, nostalgia, or nearly 2 decades of compatible product malarkey!) D&D stuff!

Although I do not add to it nearly as much as I used to I have a collection of RPG books that eats up about half my living room. I own nearly every D&D book made from around 1985 to around the 2k mark. Their prices just started getting so out of wack in the last 10 years I started slowing down and then lately most of my gaming friends left the area so I don't get as many as I once did.

Heh.  You should hear RPGnet.  They think RPG books are too cheap and we are gosh darn LUCKY every time there is a new totally uncompatible edition coming out, usually with a 50 dollar full color hardback.

LUCKY.  DONT WE UNDERSTAND ITS A STEAL?

Current RPG books as I mentioned above are to RPGs what Hal Jordan is to comics and Strike Witches is to anime.

Pandering to the worst excesses and biggest idiots of your customerbase, which keeps getting smaller and smaller.  So you continue to pander HARDER and wonder where the fuck everybody went.

Oh man, my bad. I can't believe we both remember that...but to be honest, I think the box got chucked last month; family (re: everyone else) felt like cleaning, and I apparently had too much stuff from when we moved in 2+ years still sitting in boxes in the basement.

It was all smashed to piss though, so I doubt you'd want to display the thing. :|

I'm not a collector.  I'm a tosser-outter.  I've probably tossed out more games, books, Hummel figurines than most people have ever bought.  I plan to do a big junk room cleaning very very soon, too.  Time to buy extra strength garden bin bags!

Aye, I collect. I collect and keep everything, from gaming stuff to old restaurant checks to remember "ye ole days" and stuff like that. My house is a museum only I would pay the ticket for.

This is some of the gaming stuff (so not showing CDs, DVDs, mangas, books, boardgames, shoes, random paper, memories, iron debris...), what is out to be seen and not packed somewhere like Nintendos, Megadrives, Amigas and whatever doesn't fit in my supersmall apartment. The thing with collecting is that you need two things: obsession and money. I have lots of the first and not enough of the second.

You have some EQ2 mixed with your B'Tech.

I ran across my Wasteland box a couple of days ago and it made me sad.  My Wasteland character saves were the main reason I was pissed at losing my backup drive.  Everything else I could recover in some form or fashion.

I still have my original Atari 2600 and 42 cartridges for it, and my Apple 2 with somewhere around 30 ROMs of games like Wasteland, Bard's Tale, Moebius, and Ultima 1-4. Also have a PS1 and like 60 games, and have a friend's PS2 with like 10 games now that he has a PS3.

I had a NES and SNES, and a Sega Genesis w/ CD all of which were either broken or traded in. Maybe had 20 games tops for each system at one point, all of which were traded in (Funcoland) or gifted to friends.

Does that make me a collector?

I should take some more pictures of my whole gaming collection.  The problem is I am already going through my second flickr account like its water and I need to be able to post pictures and stuff to my blog!  My current blog project is a massive set of house rules/streamlining of AD&D 2nd edition.  The combat section is being done in the comic format I do and everyone here is annoyed by.  It looks like it will be over 20 comic pages by the time I finish it!

To me, yes. If you don't throw that stuff out when you move, or when you marry. If you don't consider selling it, you managed to keep it in nice, clean boxes for all these years and feel bad if they get somehow crushed, then yes you are a collector.

There's a fine line between a collector and a packrat.

Title: Re: Do we have any "collector's" here?
Post by: Falconeer on August 28, 2008, 06:19:16 AM
Right. I'll add on top of what I said that you should actively look for things, and buy/trade them, regardless their use. Spending money to fill shelves (not just boxes in a cellar) is another prerequisite. I spent lots for my unpunched 2nd edition Talisman box. No need to tell, it's still unpunched (<-- the collector!).
CoC's Orient Express was another crazy purchase, but at least I played it (<-- the man).

Taolurker even having to ask if it made him a collector was 1. Trolling Mockery, he's not a retard, and 2. a packrat. You don't happen across collecting or a collection. Shit has to have some kind of personal value beyond the box. Not just boxes you're too lazy to throw away.

Title: Re: Do we have any "collector's" here?
Post by: taolurker on August 28, 2008, 03:52:41 PM
I didn't collect them, I saved them. It wasn't an attempt at a collection, it was me retaining the first gaming and first computer systems I owned as keepsakes.

If you don't consider selling it, you managed to keep it in nice, clean boxes for all these years and feel bad if they get somehow crushed, then yes you are a collector.

I'll never sell these, have managed to keep them in decent shape (both systems still work), but I don't have a single original box to get crushed. The apple computer ROMs are in diskette trays, and the Atari cartridges are in a wood grained cartridge holder and shoe boxes. I do still have many of the games manuals, though. I was 7 years old when I got the Atari and 11 when I got the Apple.

Taolurker even having to ask if it made him a collector was 1. Trolling Mockery, he's not a retard, and 2. a packrat. You don't happen across collecting or a collection. Shit has to have some kind of personal value beyond the box. Not just boxes you're too lazy to throw away.

People who keep things because of personal value doesn't automatically make it a "collection", and because I didn't keep boxes or retain every single game I'd ever owned, I don't consider myself a "collector" and was asking seriously. People who keep boxes are the packrats IMO. My keepsakes only have value to me, which is why I don't count them as a collection, and after seeing all of Falcon's pics I figured I'd ask, but Fuck you very much anyway, Schild, for responding.

They'd be pretty boring pictures, since ~3500 of those are in zip archives of ROMs and abandonware.
