Title: Dragon Age comes with a toolset
Post by: Stormwaltz on August 16, 2008, 03:17:41 PM
I thought any ex-NWN creators here might want to know.

Hawt. I actually haven't done any modding since NWN1, and that was earlier this year. Too many tools are great for studios, but too rough for the average gamer. NWN1 got this right by prefabbing like everything.

I like how y'all are actually showcasing this. Modding tools never get enough pimping, and that's something that can save an otherwise mediocre game.

I didn't like NWN, because it prefabbed too much :) When I was modding it was Quake and Unreal, where you build things from the ground up. No prefabbed item for the module you're building? So solly cholly. Or go build it in a modelling program, which is more than I wanted to get into.

When I mod with Quake or Unreal, I have a lot of fun, but I never get it done. I started to make my neighborhood in Half-Life 2, was going to call it "Headcrab Zombie Lynnwood," and have Michael Jackson's "Thriller" playing in the background. I got the street laid out, and a couple buildings (out of twenty) look great, but that's as far as I got. Very few props, a bunch of cubes with wall textures, and I still can't get the music going right. Meanwhile I build an entire module for NWN in about a week, and it got high marks from the NWN community. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Does it address the scripting 'issue'?

That was always my issue with NWN build tools. I would go about designing my lovely little adventure town, but the only interactions I could generate were on par with Final Fantasy for the NES. Need to wizard that shit up somehow!

I never thought this was in doubt.  Ever since following this game from concept it was always touted as Bioware's real attempt at a toolset free of d20 restrictions.  I suppose that kind of got lost when it became an actual game.

I've heard this game is single-player only.  Makes me wonder why I'd bother with the toolset if I can't make a world for my friends and I to all goof around in.

Yeah, that. Also, will it be face-fuckingly buggy like the NWN1 toolset was for about 6 months after release? Because having to save every 5 seconds in case the toolset crashed or having modules I'd worked on for months get corrupted for no good goddamn reason was a motherfucking joy in my pants.

Oblivion and Morrowind both are single player with HUGE mod communities.

I agree, they are.  I just don't see why I would care to mod for a single player game.  I'm sure there are others that would, but I for one think that Oblivion's greatest flaw was that you couldn't play it multiplayer.

Did someone say Baldur's Gate 3? Oh hell yeah. My interest just went from near zero to Eleven.
