The amazing thing is that AICN ever became popular, especially because Knowles did a whole heap of stuff that should have seen it die (i.e. ugly, ugly formatting, horrible writing, his well-known love of payola for preferencial treatment on AICN).

The prequels was Lucas finishing the story he'd always wanted to tell. Unfortunately for the rest of us, the story wasn't that good.

Lucas deserves all the kudos in the world for his technical contributions to film and for the original Star Wars film; however, his recent work has definitely tarnished his cinematic legacy. That he can't direct actors is probably his biggest flaw, followed by his dialogue writing skills.

I admire Lucas in that he's able to do what he wants, how he wants.  I also admire what he's done technology wise for the film industry.  It's just that his story telling ability gets lost in all his tech and weird ideas.

I love the original Trilogy, and I at least like 70% of the new movies and cartoon stuff.  When it comes down to it though, I'm just a SW geek.  I'll still watch anything SW, read some of the books, and play the games based off it.

I will share one crack-monkey idea I had that probably never would have made release: I wanted a floating economy. As in, NPCs that valued loot/items/material based on the amount of money in the economy. If money devalued, then by god MONEY WOULD DEVALUE - NPCs would have a similar judge of monetary value as players.  It would be interesting to see if hyperinflation would kick in, the effects thereof, how players would cope, would an alternative economy form... good stuff.  However it is dangerously close to "ant farming" ie hmm, maybe it'll be interesting if I pour all this poison sugar on the helpless ants/players in my sandbox. So, yeah, I'm sure someone sane would have talked me out of it.

More topicy, Webwars: Eve looks a lot of fun. I find it harder and harder to roll up my sleeves and get down for a marathon session of awesome rawkin HARDCORE GAAAAAAAAAAAAMING!!!!! I don't think this is the future of all gaming, but I'm interested to think what the gaming public will make of this. It's like a casual game for the hardcore, or something somesuch.

It's definitely an interesting concept which is a large part of the reason I decided to join the team. I don't want to hijack this thread, but once we're ready, we'll be making some more announcements about EVE Wars I am sure. First I gotta move my family back to Austin, get to know the team and the project better, and then we'll take it from there.

Hopefully those that got laid off will find something quickly. There are some really experienced and talented people in that group of 21.

The official currency in AC1 (the pyreal) was worthless for a long long time.

The money sinks weren't sufficient, and the money was easy to come by. So, the players eventually settled on alternative currencies. There were even web sites that tried to track the relative value of the alternatives. We used pyreal motes, solid iron keys, virindi chest keys, etc etc. As the monthly patches went in, the relative values of the currencies would shift, depending on what was added to the game, did the devs nerf anything, etc etc. Alt currencies would come into play, and others would lose their market value.

On the other hand, the vendors rarely changed their prices, so the basic consumables were always easily affordable. The alt currencies were used to purchase things you couldn't get from the vendors.

Schild was more on target than a number of other sites that posted this rumour - they claimed that TR was going to dump a lot of people, where as Schild said TR was protected (for now). So, gg on the info.

April "CuppaJo" Burba and Crickette (don't know her real name off the top of my head) were both let go from DR (afaik). A group of CoH/V fanbois are making calls for CuppaJo to come back (and there is some :heart: for Crickette, but there's a core group that  :heart: :heart: :heart: CuppaJo) to being the CMs - I don't think Cuppa would want to come back to being a CM after being a producer, but Cryptic is looking for a producer...

It's amazing the trail of destruction that AA and TR have left in their wake. Could NCsoft handle a 3rd major flop?

... of course, the NA section of the business is only about a fifth of the overall business, but it has still got to hurt.

The problem is that the budgets weren't scaled to the size of the business. Though they deny it it's very likely that TR cost at least as much if not more than WoW to make. For AA NCsoft took a $13.1 million writeoff on the game, on top of all the money they sunk into the development/marketing/promotion.

I also have to wonder how much money was sunk into Lum's project and into publisher deals for MMOs like Blackstar. All that has to add up for the complete lack of return NCsoft are getting on those abandoned investments.

My exit interview with SoE was conducted by one of their lawyers, not by one of their producers or HR folks.   In the end, it's still just a business.

It's funny that Schild moves to writing. My humble opinion is that f13 is doing great on community management but very average on writing. Why not take a community manager position?

Honestly, while I think I'd like a community management position, the number of games I'd want to work on are very few. The people I'd be willing to work with, even less. Being the manager of f13 has allowed me to .... hear and see things that you can't unsee or unhear.

Edit: I should point out I'm not trying to be an elitist prick with that statement so much as a lot of the gaming industry, particularly the online sector, is a lot of laughable amateur hour karaoke bullshit. We're talking the vast majority, including Community Management. And also, it's a very tight knit group of people that splits into about 3 factions and they all float through jobs effortlessly having little effect on the communities. Frankly, it's embarrassing. Development houses don't take the job seriously and the people in the job just try to wedge themselves into design. Or at least, that bad ones do (again, vast majority). It's also a position with a very low ceiling, frankly, you have to pick design or production afterwards. And honestly, I don't know which I'd want or if I'd want either. I'd like the position to gain some traction in the industry as well, I mean fuck, it's the first line of defense against the customers and half of them forget they work for the company when they respond to people and the other half just want to play Community Mommy, Daddy, or Teenage Babysitter.

Because Blizzard ate everyone's fucking lunch.  They brought big-money production values and an actual "release it when it's finished" business philosophy to the table, and raised the bar for everyone.  And when faced with this raising of the bar, the chucklefuck establishment that had been taking the genre on a slow ride to nowhere with years of unfinished releases and general bullshit looked at the challenge, rose up as one, and said "Uh... we didn't want that business model anyway."

Everytime someone in the industry goes on about how browser games for twelve-year old girls represent the real wave of the future, all I can hear is "World of Warcraft made my company's butthole hurt!"

WoW cost $50 million according to that article, and does upwards of $1 billion per year.  Meaning that even if you went hog-wild and spent as much as Blizzard, you'd only need to do a small fraction of their business in order to be rolling around in piles of cash.  But nobody else can even pull off that fraction.  I don't think anything else has even managed to match peak EQ1 numbers, and how long ago was that?

I think the problem in going "WoW ate everyone's lunch for sub-model" is that MapleStory has eaten everyone's lunch for the RMT-model. Just looking at the market leader ignores that a lot of sub-based MMOs have lived for a very long time. I'm not sure of the life-span of an RMT model MMO, but I'd expect it to be shorter.

And all that ignores that it isn't the sub-model that is to fault - it's spending tens of millions of dollars over 3 years on a horribly complex set of proprietary custom-designed systems for a game that might fail the simplest fun test. While an RMT model MMO might have a lower cost, it doesn't mean it has any more likelihood of success if the title overpromises and underdelivers.

I fully believe that the $15 per month sub-fee market's days are numbered, but sub-models are always going to have a place. Why? Because WoW has shown just how effective such a revenue model can be. Personally I think combination low-sub fee and RMT revenue models are the way forward, but they still need a decent game to hang off if they are to work.

To some extent it comes back to what the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire said: stop aiming to develop for the AAA market; develop for a profitable niche instead.

None of the RMT (Runescape, MapleStory, that penguin one and DungeonQuest) games have kept my daughter's attention beyond a week or two.   The only reason she ever logs in to one nowadays is if her mom and I are already playing on WoW together, so she can't login on one of our accounts.  Even at nearly 10 the production values aren't enough to capture her attention.  She prefers Wow because "it looks better" and "It's more fun."    I haven't had her try Dungeon Runners yet, though, so we'll see how that goes.   Yeah, it's anecdotal but I find it noteworthy that her attitude mirrors that of other, older gamers.

You know, it's not that I expect anyone else to beat Blizzard, or even seriously contend with them.  It's the fact that no one else has even beaten EQ1, and EQ1 was only that big thanks to lack of competition.  WAR is going to come out with it's cut-down two capital cities, get crushed and hobble along with a couple hundred thousand subscribers like everyone else, and then the failure of the first real post-WoW generation of MMOs will be total.

Frankly I'm content to have them all go make Flash games or whatever and just abandon the traditional MMO market to Blizzard completely.  Sooner or later SOME new player will come along with $200 million and a hard-on to challenge the king, even if we have to wait ten years for it to happen.

I'd only be content if they were making good flash game.  That War Web project sounds horrible.

This is way too much a hit-driven business because it's forced itself there, and I don't know how or when it happened. Still researching that one. I think it happened around the time EA bought OSI, because around that time people started spending way too much into games and making way too little on them. So now there are too many people out there not spending money on games, so designers are chasing them because Blizzard got everybody else. Either that or people are still convinced they can beat Blizzard at their own game. So it's a question of, how much can you make just off one month of subscribers? If you can sell a game, and get 100,000 people to subscribe for one month, aim for that then sell the whole damn thing. Or sell the whole company. Or do whatever it takes to keep making games as long as possible. Break apart then make a new company. Rinse and repeat.

Or you could get in on this Flash thing which seems to be working pretty well.

Out of those 4, 3 of them I've thought long and hard about. FPS is the one I haven't ironically because there's too many variables when it comes to connection and lag. But the other 3, yes. Nobody thinks the hardcore or medium-core or whatever could ever be swayed to webgames. That's impossible. What is possible is everybody but Blizzard stops making games for this demographic, because only Blizzard can afford to do it right. I've always been fascinated by the fact people assumed it was a lame nickname. When in fact, it was just my last name - it didn't become a nickname until I got on teamspeak and people didn't know what to call me when it came down to actual speaking. Of all the things, that was the thing that piqued my interest the most.

Joe was "inner circle" iirc.  He was one of the guys who posted at Moorlocks and the various other places that the #Hate crew did.  They felt it was a betrayal to give the MMO/ Bullshitting site to schild when he was an 'outsider.'  Plus they think he's a douche.  So, drama.

The only person still touchy about it is schild, if it's brought up. Nobody else really gives two yanks fom what I can see.

Just because no one mentioned it, Joe went to work for then Themis, which was why he gave the site to Schild. The drama part was all after the bombshell dropped, and the forum warfare immediately after.

The writing Schild will be doing obviously is for one of the network sites that the Themis people work on, so it does actually bring into question why Joe left in the first place when he started a writing for them job?

The MMO forum veterans or devs post to many different places, have blogs, and post to a forum that was or wasn't related to some site.

Some of us who have been around long enough understand it's just a community that may or may not recognize you for what you've said in previous posts (on this or another forum). Other than that? Meh it's an MMO forum, with above avg comedy sometimes.

Giantrealm has nothing to do with Warcry. I'm not going to get into details that have absolutely no business in public consumption, but you can only go by what's written on web pages. The facts behind the current arrangement and previous on-goings are the knowledge of maybe 4-5 people. Suffice it to say, 95% or so of everything that's been made public by anyone besides myself or Joe is hearsay. Except for a few posts by Haemish and one or two posts by Soulflame.

Actually, at this point f13 may have lasted longer than LtM itself did.  Scott may have started it much earlier, but it was Sasha the Cyberwhore, GM Darwin, and the great flamewar with Dr. Twister (where it differentiated itself from everywhere else that talked about how screwed up UO was by not taking the side of the exploiters) that really forged the community.  That would put it around 1998, and by 2001 he was working for Mythic and the slow-motion train wreck of the Diaspora was on.

I skipped the whole Corpnews/Waterthread thing.  When SND blew up, I went and hung out at Arcadian's for a while and had epic religion-fights with Dashammer, who I think might have gone on to become our Dash of politics forum fame.  After Arcadian disappeared to become the Chicken King, I just kinda dropped out until my brother pointed me at Waterthread just in time for f13 to be born.

I only started reading these sites after f13 was created, I only know about waterthread and all the the other sites because you guys rehash it so damn often :uhrr:.  I read and lurked a bit over at the corp website just because so many people here talked about it (at that time).  I thought the core people over there were some of the most smug, self-centered, holier than though wastes of flesh I had ever seen, I couldn't stand reading the main clique's posts.  I'm glad that website is a dusty graveyard.

Edit: And I hate how it's referred to as "The Diaspora", that is so far over the top it makes my head spin.

It gets called the diaspora because there's a real sense that it was a community that got broken up, also it's a community full of people who like a bit of melodrama.

Man rereading all those old posts brought back some memories (mostly of being confused at why everyone was suddenly declaring the coming apocalypse and who this schild asshole was). I miss the good ol' days of UO back when getting PKed could be a real adrenaline rush and people bitched about any changes that got made. Also about not having necromancy (was that finally introduced? I stopped paying attention when someone explained what EQ was to me).

One thing I've actually always been curious about but never bothered to ask, were there actually people who posted at F13 prior to the Waterthread merge? I was kind of under the impression there were people but I also don't know anyone who hadn't come from Waterthread or later.

I don't remember reviews of Gilmore Girls, but who knows. I'll be perfectly honest, I was drunk for the entire first year of f13. I was drunk for the first 3 years of college in fact. If I reviewed any TV or movie stuff, it's because I was blasted beyond recognition.

I've hit a snag in understanding this thread.

I watched the gilmore girls too. I always felt embarrassed when they played that saccarine "I'll be there for you" intro song, and I felt the situations weren't at all realistic, but it had great dialogue. I'll watch nearly anything with hot chicks in it; I watched Honey straight through, both seasons of Dark Angel, and I even made it through several seasons of Charmed before choking on my own rising vomit. Dude, I watch Gossip Girl, and no matter how many times I say it's just for the hot chicks I'm pretty sure that means I have a vagina.

Generally speaking, if a show with quality manages to sneak past the rigorous checks and fail-safes, it will be canceled swiftly.    Shows with quality threaten to expose what utter shit everything else is.

God I hated Atma, just because every step on that damn flying island was another random encounter. It was like FF4 all over again.

First time I played ff6, I just ran every single encounter on that fucking island.  Then when I got to atma weapon, I beat it only by a fluke on my 10th try.  Then, I was too gimp to do whatever was after that.

Second time, I spent the hour getting through it, and the rest of the game was way too easy.
