(NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: schild on August 11, 2008, 12:52:09 PM I had this great bit about Bioware willing to hire anybody so apply early and often.
Seriously though, I'm hoping Bioware sucks up half of the hiring market. This is essentially poisoning to the entire hiring pool here. Midway just sucked and couldn't produce squat. NCSoft, while they may have a lot of talent - and they do, are probably totally brow beaten and completely unenthusiastic for the most part. What it comes down to, is I don't like this situation. Also, I called Garriott a LARPing Astronaut making Bland Wars in Space in the original draft. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. Enjoy the OT and ignore the rest, it's aimed at the kids they were supposed to have had by now. My son and nephews have loved the last 3 movies and all the other ancillary crap around it. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: Evildrider on August 12, 2008, 03:58:38 PM Not only is Knowles a terrible writer and reviewer, but you have to understand how he reviews movies from guys he likes: he interviews them, he sets up a special screening at the Alamo Drafthouse, he gets all excited, he attends with all his buddies, loves it then says it's an "audience movie" and a "rocking good time" or some shit like that. Some of the AICN guys are ok, in particular Moriarty. But Knowles is a joke. I think even the people that post alot on AICN know that Knowles is a joke. All of his reviews are retarded. Moriarty is the only one I really read reviews from and he tends to post most of the info that I go there looking for in the first place. BTW Moriarty said he liked the new Clone Wars cartoon, so it must not be too terrible. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: Margalis on August 12, 2008, 04:58:50 PM I believe Moriarty is also a writer, I think he's the one that wrote some scripts for Masters of Horror. So he's not a retard.

I liked the prequels well enough, but all this cartoon and television stuff I view as Lucas just shamelessly milking the cash cow. The thing is, I don't really begrudge him his milk. He's been doing it for thirty years, ever since he thought "Hey, action figures!" so it's a little hard for me to pop my monocle about it now. If this Clone Wars thing sucks ass then I'll just neglect to go see it, not fucking drown the internet in tears and kill myself. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news to Post by: WindupAtheist on August 12, 2008, 07:20:21 PM Maybe I phrased it badly, but my point is that it's ALL milking the cash cow and has been since the very beginning. The distinction I draw between the prequel movies and any of the various "side-projects" is that at least Lucas sat down with a pencil and wrote the movies. The other stuff he barely pays attention to. All those dozens and dozens of Star Wars novels that meticulously lay out what happens between and after the movies? I guarantee you he has no idea what the fuck happens in any of them and doesn't care.
It's the difference between "I will write this story that's in my head and it will make me money!" and "Hey you, write something based on my work and bring me the money! I don't care what!" Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. I have read that review twice in my life - once to see what the fuss was about, once because I forgot I'd read it. I'M NOT MAKING THAT MISTAKE AGAIN. The amazing thing is that AICN ever became popular, especially because Knowles did a whole heap of stuff that should have seen it die (i.e. ugly, ugly formatting, horrible writing, his well-known love of payola for preferencial treatment on AICN). Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: UnSub on August 12, 2008, 07:44:27 PM Hm? You're telling me the Prequels weren't just shamelessly milking the cash cow? Interesting. The prequels was Lucas finishing the story he'd always wanted to tell. Unfortunately for the rest of us, the story wasn't that good. Lucas deserves all the kudos in the world for his technical contributions to film and for the original Star Wars film; however, his recent work has definitely tarnished his cinematic legacy. That he can't direct actors is probably his biggest flaw, followed by his dialogue writing skills. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. I love the original Trilogy, and I at least like 70% of the new movies and cartoon stuff. When it comes down to it though, I'm just a SW geek. As you run around, you leave some of the most horrendous gas clouds known to Man (and Gosh) behind you! Each gas cloud causes some poison damage when an enemy runs into it. On top of that, the enemy may take an additional amount of poison damage over time. Sadly, the bad tofu does leave its mark on you too. To get your very own My Flaming Buddy, attack an enemy with this skill! Doing so will dish out a healthy amount of fire damage on your enemy and will potentially create a new My Flaming Buddy that runs around causing fire damage to nearby enemies. Don't get too attached to your new Buddy because his friendship is very temporary; 8 seconds to be exact. Look at the bright side; you don't have to deal with any long term commitments. My Flaming Buddy, My Flaming Buddy and me! Ray of Gosh (Mage Trainer) Behold, all of your prayers are answered! Okay, perhaps not all, but at least this one is! Gosh sends down a mighty ray of Divine light to smite your enemies! Each ray shines down upon the position you pray for and sears an area with a radius of 2 meters for 3 seconds. Good luck thar Sir. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: schild on August 13, 2008, 01:55:46 PM Quote Today NCsoft confirmed to Kotaku that they are indeed laying some folks off from their Austin offices. "We are announcing that 21 positions are being eliminated in the Austin office of NCsoft in the area of product development," an NCsoft spokesman told Kotaku. "Primarily this is related to products which we have not previously announced and were in prototype phases. We are also cutting some positions on the Dungeon Runners team after deciding not to port the client to other platforms at this time." The news comes a day after parent company Korean-based NCsoft announced a bump in sales but a drop in operating profit and net income. The news is a stark contrast to rumors that surfaces earlier this week that 140 to 160 people were going to be let go and the office possibly shuttered. At the time NCsoft told Kotaku that the rumors were "not accurate at all" and "pretty outrageous." What's not accurate at all and outrageous today isn't so outrageous in a couple months. I know PR has to spin, but the writing is on the wall. Shit, I put it there. Edit: Of course, I'd love them to NOT fire all of them to prove me wrong. Then people wouldn't be out of work. :ye_gods: Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. I will share one crack-monkey idea I had that probably never would have made release: I wanted a floating economy. As in, NPCs that valued loot/items/material based on the amount of money in the economy. If money devalued, then by god MONEY WOULD DEVALUE - NPCs would have a similar judge of monetary value as players. It would be interesting to see if hyperinflation would kick in, the effects thereof, how players would cope, would an alternative economy form... good stuff. However it is dangerously close to "ant farming" ie hmm, maybe it'll be interesting if I pour all this poison sugar on the helpless ants/players in my sandbox. So, yeah, I'm sure someone sane would have talked me out of it. Also, this was an interesting thread. (http://guildwars.incgamers.com/showthread.php?t=462447) Title: Re: Guys. It would be interesting to see if hyperinflation would kick in, the effects thereof, how players would cope, would an alternative economy form... good stuff. The official currency in AC1 (the pyreal) was worthless for a long long time. The money sinks weren't sufficient, and the money was easy to come by. So, the players eventually settled on alternative currencies. There were even web sites that tried to track the relative value of the alternatives. We used pyreal motes, solid iron keys, virindi chest keys, etc etc. As the monthly patches went in, the relative values of the currencies would shift, depending on what was added to the game, did the devs nerf anything, etc etc. Alt currencies would come into play, and others would lose their market value. On the other hand, the vendors rarely changed their prices, so the basic consumables were always easily affordable. The alt currencies were used to purchase things you couldn't get from the vendors. The problem is that the budgets weren't scaled to the size of the business. Though they deny it it's very likely that TR cost at least as much if not more than WoW to make. For AA NCsoft took a $13.1 million writeoff on the game, on top of all the money they sunk into the development/marketing/promotion.... of course, the NA section of the business is only about a fifth of the overall business, but it has still got to hurt. random comments : I hope Schild will have some influence on Giantrealm's site layout. It's horrible. f13's one is amazing. It's funny that Schild moves to writing. My humble opinion is that f13 is doing great on community management but very average on writing. Why not take a community manager position? Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. (NCSoft/Midway news too) Post by: schild on August 14, 2008, 07:40:03 PM Honestly, while I think I'd like a community management position, the number of games I'd want to work on are very few. The people I'd be willing to work with, even less. Being the manager of f13 has allowed me to .... hear and see things that you can't unsee or unhear.
Edit: I should point out I'm not trying to be an elitist prick with that statement so much as a lot of the gaming industry, particularly the online sector, is a lot of laughable amateur hour karaoke bullshit. We're talking the vast majority, including Community Management. And also, it's a very tight knit group of people that splits into about 3 factions and they all float through jobs effortlessly having little effect on the communities. Frankly, it's embarrassing. Development houses don't take the job seriously and the people in the job just try to wedge themselves into design. Or at least, that bad ones do (again, vast majority). It's also a position with a very low ceiling, frankly, you have to pick design or production afterwards. And honestly, I don't know which I'd want or if I'd want either. I'd like the position to gain some traction in the industry as well, I mean fuck, it's the first line of defense against the customers and half of them forget they work for the company when they respond to people and the other half just want to play Community Mommy, Daddy, or Teenage Babysitter. They brought big-money production values and an actual "release it when it's finished" business philosophy to the table, and raised the bar for everyone. And when faced with this raising of the bar, the chucklefuck establishment that had been taking the genre on a slow ride to nowhere with years of unfinished releases and general bullshit looked at the challenge, rose up as one, and said "Uh... we didn't want that business model anyway." Everytime someone in the industry goes on about how browser games for twelve-year old girls represent the real wave of the future, all I can hear is "World of Warcraft made my company's butthole hurt!" WoW cost $50 million according to that article, and does upwards of $1 billion per year. Meaning that even if you went hog-wild and spent as much as Blizzard, you'd only need to do a small fraction of their business in order to be rolling around in piles of cash. But nobody else can even pull off that fraction. I don't think anything else has even managed to match peak EQ1 numbers, and how long ago was that? Bah. Title: Re: Guys. (NCSoft/Midway news to Post by: UnSub on August 17, 2008, 05:30:25 AM I think the problem in going "WoW ate everyone's lunch for sub-model" is that MapleStory has eaten everyone's lunch for the RMT-model. Just looking at the market leader ignores that a lot of sub-based MMOs have lived for a very long time. I'm not sure of the life-span of an RMT model MMO, but I'd expect it to be shorter.
And all that ignores that it isn't the sub-model that is to fault - it's spending tens of millions of dollars over 3 years on a horribly complex set of proprietary custom-designed systems for a game that might fail the simplest fun test. While an RMT model MMO might have a lower cost, it doesn't mean it has any more likelihood of success if the title overpromises and underdelivers. I fully believe that the $15 per month sub-fee market's days are numbered, but sub-models are always going to have a place. Why? Because WoW has shown just how effective such a revenue model can be. Personally I think combination low-sub fee and RMT revenue models are the way forward, but they still need a decent game to hang off if they are to work. To some extent it comes back to what the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire said: stop aiming to develop for the AAA market; develop for a profitable niche instead. Title: Re: Guys. None of the RMT (Runescape, MapleStory, that penguin one and DungeonQuest) games have kept my daughter's attention beyond a week or two. The only reason she ever logs in to one nowadays is if her mom and I are already playing on WoW together, so she can't login on one of our accounts. Even at nearly 10 the production values aren't enough to capture her attention. She prefers Wow because "it looks better" and "It's more fun." I haven't had her try Dungeon Runners yet, though, so we'll see how that goes. Yeah, it's anecdotal but I find it noteworthy that her attitude mirrors that of other, older gamers. Title: Re: Guys. This is way too much a hit-driven business because it's forced itself there, and I don't know how or when it happened. Still researching that one. I think it happened around the time EA bought OSI, because around that time people started spending way too much into games and making way too little on them. So now there are too many people out there not spending money on games, so designers are chasing them because Blizzard got everybody else. Either that or people are still convinced they can beat Blizzard at their own game. So it's a question of, how much can you make just off one month of subscribers? If you can sell a game, and get 100,000 people to subscribe for one month, aim for that then sell the whole damn thing. Or sell the whole company. Or do whatever it takes to keep making games as long as possible. Break apart then make a new company. Rinse and repeat. Or you could get in on this Flash thing which seems to be working pretty well. I want to play Aez's games now. To be more specific, I want to pay money to play them. I hope someone lets me do that soon. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. You're the one who just said, two posts ago, Waterthread was inevitably doomed to failure. Which is funny because it's coming from the guy who now works for the guy who gave up running a diaspora website (that the first guy mostly inherited) to go make money with serious internet business in the thread about joining the second guy. See, the Corp guys aren't game guys. They're gamers, but they have other lives that take precidence. Schild breathes games, apparently. A fact that wasn't apparent when he took over and suddenly the thought was this was going to be a movie & media site that ignored games. His views on MMOs didn't help that notion, particularly since the games most of the community cared about at the time were MMOs. Title: Re: Guys. I needed money - got a job writing about games. The MMO forum veterans or devs post to many different places, have blogs, and post to a forum that was or wasn't related to some site. Some of us who have been around long enough understand it's just a community that may or may not recognize you for what you've said in previous posts (on this or another forum). Other than that? Scott may have started it much earlier, but it was Sasha the Cyberwhore, GM Darwin, and the great flamewar with Dr. Twister (where it differentiated itself from everywhere else that talked about how screwed up UO was by not taking the side of the exploiters) that really forged the community. That would put it around 1998, and by 2001 he was working for Mythic and the slow-motion train wreck of the Diaspora was on.

I'll watch nearly anything with hot chicks in it; I watched Honey straight through, both seasons of Dark Angel, and I even made it through several seasons of Charmed before choking on my own rising vomit. Yes some of the others are cuties, but let me clue you into something. If all you want is hotties there are like much better shows you could be watching. Buy your daughter a WoW account of her own and get your Wife a Zhevra in the process. Then the three of you can play WoW together. edit - that should have been posted several pages ago.
