This makes me wonder what else was going on.  Why?  There exist a number of pneumonias that are only lethal when your immune system is compromised.  Not that I care, but it's not often someone dies of pneumonia in this day and age without something significantly imparing their immune system. 

Sad to see him go.  While not a fan, I appreciated the impact of the guy's work.

Well, he had sarcoidosis which supposedly had gone into remission a few years back.

That would do it.  Particularly if he were being treated with something a bit more heavy duty (i.e. methotrexate or cyclophosphamide).

Thanks for the info. If nothing else, his death may bring some needed attention to this disease. 

My ex-wife just finished her initial pharmaceutical regime for atypical pneumonia, had her second chest xray and is now waiting for a CT appointment.

I used to laugh and tell her that the only way she would ever go to a doctor was if she was coughing up blood or organs, apparently I was right.

Pneumonia seems to be quite the killer these days, thank god we are spending money on ED and weight loss research...

My supervisor here at work had a really resistant strain of something about 2 years ago that had her on her ass for about 6 months. (Not sure if it was Pneumonia or Bronchitis.)  They kept increasing the antibiotics strength/ dosage and she took them all but it simply wasn't helping until they gave her some "knocks you out it's so fucking powerful" stuff.  Until then she'd still come in to work and cough for most of the day while muttering about how the newest 10 day regimin wasn't helping, either.  There's some scary shit starting to breed out there.

I try and look on the bright side, either she gets better or I will have more disposable income every month.

The thing that realy terrifies me is the complete lack of antibiotic regulation in many countries. I've never been to Mexico, but a friend just went and was telling me that after donkey shows the big thing in Tijuana is pharmacies selling pretty much everything over the counter. Unregulated antibiotic use will over time breed antibiotic resistant strains and the problem is they'll be bred in other countries and then flown over to us with no way for either country to solve this. Problematically there is virtually no good data on antibiotic use or sale in developing countries, so there is no solid means to substantiate this. However looking at the emergence of diseases such as MRSA and MDR-TB, and the exponentially slowing rate of novel antibiotic development, I have great concerns. Frankly I'd say this should be an issue ranked more pressing than global warming, largely because the effects are so unpredictable, but potentially so deadly.

On the flip side, one idea I heard tossed around that would be nigh-on impossible to implement would be taking some of the less potent antibiotic families out of global circulation, thus removing the selection pressure these impose and allowing strains without resistance to these to mix back in, and for genetic drift to take out some of the resistance. Unfortunately this could take decades to show a return, and you could never get a universal accord on this.

Gotta love the placebo effect.  The overwhelming majority of antibiotics sold South of the border are fakes or, perhaps even worse, antibiotics that are mislabeled.

I "obtained" a prescription for valium and darvocet in a small Central American country a while back.  Luckily the items from the pharmacy were real.  However, considering how easy it is to find a friendly doctor in North America now I would almost certainly go to a legitimate pharmacy.
