Title: Disgaea 3 Post by: Riggswolfe on August 01, 2008, 06:27:05 AM Ok, is this going to be worth it? I haven't picked up the prior games in the series but have been looking at this and wondering.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 01, 2008, 06:27:32 AM You should really pick up the previous two. Or at least, 2. Man, I loved Disgaea 2. I might play it again. If I can find the box it's in.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Cyrrex on August 01, 2008, 06:55:26 AM Did you check the Disgaea 2 box?
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 01, 2008, 06:56:42 AM Did you check the Disgaea 2 box? I just moved and only unpacked next-gen and PC stuff. :P Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Rasix on August 01, 2008, 07:56:20 AM Ok, is this going to be worth it? I haven't picked up the prior games in the series but have been looking at this and wondering. Like schild says, try 2 first. The system is really refined in 2. Some may prefer the plot and story of 1, but made great improvements to 1's combat system. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Sairon on August 01, 2008, 09:20:06 AM I think 2 is a great game, but it kind of tends to get a little grindy after a while if you want to finish more than the storyline. I hope they fix that in 3, even more stuff to toy around with! I usually give up when you know you'll be spending the next X hours grinding away at the same encounter over and over again.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 01, 2008, 09:15:07 PM NISA just announced Ar Tonelico 2 for the PS2.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 05, 2008, 03:30:28 PM Disgaea 3 is coming to me this Friday. Is there anything you all want me to specifically talk about?
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Yegolev on August 05, 2008, 05:26:16 PM I'd specifically like to know if the combat/character/item system has been altered significantly and in what direction.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 08, 2008, 12:34:59 PM The first rule of Disgaea 3, for the first time in gaming history - I will say it: PLAY IT IN FUCKING ENGLISH. Holy crap, so awesome. Laughing so hard at the first battle cutscene I almost cried.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 08, 2008, 03:18:51 PM Alright. Almost done with the first chapter, this game is fucking fantastic.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Falconeer on August 09, 2008, 09:20:55 AM Hey!
Friday? How come?! Isn't it supposed to be out for late august? Now they'll deliver it to me while I am out of town, it will go back to the US and I'll be SCREWED AND MAD! Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 09, 2008, 09:31:04 AM It's an advance copy, you ninny.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Riggswolfe on August 09, 2008, 11:44:39 AM Ok, is it an RPG with tactical elements or is it a tactical game with RPG elements? How much story is there? What kind of character customization?
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 09, 2008, 11:53:21 AM Oh wow, have you never played Disgaea? For basically all of your questions the answer is - what's the most of each of those you've seen? Now add to that. As for the RPG bit, it basically sets the bar for SRPGs. Which is to say, it's a tactical RPG.
The story is lighthearted though. And that's sort of an understatement thus far, but I imagine it's going to get more serious soon (only about 5 hours in, chapter 2). Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Mazakiel on August 09, 2008, 01:32:36 PM Basically, all I want to know is if it's at least as good as the last ones, ie, they didn't fuck it up. I'm guessing, so far at least, they haven't.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 09, 2008, 01:42:48 PM It has, actually, only been better than the previous two - on a technical level. I like the story thus far, but I can't speak for the story this early in other than it's on par with the other two this early on. I *think* Adell is still my favorite lead though.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Mazakiel on August 09, 2008, 02:18:34 PM Good to hear so far. Time will likely seem to drag waiting for the 26th, unfortunately.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Moaner on August 09, 2008, 07:10:39 PM How is the optional shit so far? My favorite part of Disgaea 2 was all the extra stuff. I loved item world, the land of carnage, the dark council, the pirates, etc. Is all that stuff really intact?
If this game is as good as it looks I'm going to be playing it for a VERY long time. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Sairon on August 11, 2008, 03:55:44 AM Yes, I'm also interested in hearing about all the extras they've added. Would be cool with a 5 best new things and 5 worst new things, or something like that
Also, how's the grind? This is my only complaint about Disgaea 2, that it got a bit grindy later on. You unlocked all the moves etc fairly fast. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 11, 2008, 06:16:02 AM Well, I'll say this, thus far there's no character you can just twink out to be an unstoppable free-floating killing machine like Tink.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 12, 2008, 04:40:50 PM http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38249.html?type=flv
Gametrailers put it up so I didn't have to cell phone cam it! Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Mazakiel on August 20, 2008, 08:52:36 AM How does the game hold up? Is it still a blast?
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on August 20, 2008, 02:00:18 PM Yea, and I've unlocked some more stuff that really streamlined leveling. I'll go into that in my "reviewish thing."
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Jain Zar on August 21, 2008, 02:11:24 AM If only this was on... every other current system that isn't the PS3.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Strazos on August 26, 2008, 07:13:20 PM I ganked the "Custom Soundtrack" from Gamestop. It's luv.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Falconeer on August 27, 2008, 09:59:27 AM Why my honor student box isn't here yet? Snarl!
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Yegolev on August 28, 2008, 07:35:55 AM I bought this last night upon seeing it on the shelf at GameStop. The clerk gave me the soundtrack as well since no one had preordered the game.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Falconeer on September 09, 2008, 05:26:48 AM Ok just received the honor student pack.
DISAPPOINTMENT: Maybe I wasn't paying attention but this is not a collector edition box, just a package with all the Disgaea 3 related material available on the Rosenqueen website. I need boxes, so this is a let down. COOL STUFF: I didn't get the dreaded student flag as a surprise item, instead I got the japanese double CD original soundtrack. It's not as cool as the art book but it's better than the flag. UBERNESS OF THE GOODBYE WORLD KIND: Disgaea 3. 'nuff said. On a different note, I was checking past threads and found the one about Disgaea 2. Many were frothing about it, while almost no one is giving a shit about Disgaea 3. Is this because PS3 aren't that widespread yet (I mean here on f13) or because interest faded over time? Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Yegolev on September 09, 2008, 06:27:19 AM I'm assuming it's the lack of PS3 install base.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on September 09, 2008, 07:24:42 AM Falconeer, the art book was crap. The soundtrack was the only way to win that one.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Yegolev on September 09, 2008, 11:36:20 AM I got the soundtrack without a preorder because I have a massive cock.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Strazos on September 09, 2008, 05:00:21 PM I stole one from work. It's nice. :awesome_for_real:
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Phildo on September 09, 2008, 05:41:03 PM I got the sdtk without a preorder also. And to be honest, I got bored with the game by the end of chapter 5. Only half of my characters had unlocked more than one ability aside from the unique npcs (which I don't tend to use in these games since I'm preoccupied with unlocking new classes).
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on September 09, 2008, 05:50:06 PM Quote Only half of my characters had unlocked more than one ability Because you don't want to buy them or something? Characters don't unlock abilities in this game, you do. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Phildo on September 09, 2008, 06:04:21 PM Yeah, and I'm raising 10-15 different characters at once. It's hard to even break 100 mana for them right now. And that mana is needed to reincarnate, do things in Homeroom and power up existing skills as well. There are too many things tied to it.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: MrHat on September 09, 2008, 06:33:54 PM What is this game and why are so many people playing it?
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on September 09, 2008, 06:52:22 PM Yeah, and I'm raising 10-15 different characters at once. It's hard to even break 100 mana for them right now. And that mana is needed to reincarnate, do things in Homeroom and power up existing skills as well. There are too many things tied to it. 1. Classroom world. Love it. 2. 10-15? Fucking why? Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Phildo on September 09, 2008, 07:20:23 PM Because it's how you unlock character classes. And the classroom world is an insufferable grind because you can't run through the exits quickly.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Strazos on September 09, 2008, 07:40:37 PM How many characters can you use in a single battle? That number is the number of characters you should be using, +1-4 possibly, depending on if there are times your main toons are unavailable.
Or can you not go from job to job with the same character? I'm just going from typical SRPG common wisdom. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Phildo on September 09, 2008, 08:08:07 PM Up to 10 characters in a single battle. I have a core of 8-10 that I use and a few others that I bring out whenever there's bonus EXP at the end of the level.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Falconeer on September 09, 2008, 11:41:29 PM My main problem right now is powering up my healer skills as she can't get no mana. I guess I have to use the robbing thing to steal 50% mana from a classmate but in the first 7 level I racked up 6 mana total for her and you need at least 20 to get the rob. I am sure the previous Disgaeas put me on the wrong track and now I am killing foozles the wrong way.
Loving it, of course, but micromanaging skills and eviliities is giving me the chills. That's overwhelming! And the intro song isn't on par with the first two, but they were enormous shoes to fill. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Phildo on September 10, 2008, 06:04:11 AM Another thing you can do is use tower attacks to split mana/exp for kills. I like to put a few level 1 reincarnated characters into a stack with Mao or someone strong and use that for deathblows. They gain the first few levels very quickly once you're fighting enemies over level 30 or so.
Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Falconeer on September 10, 2008, 07:22:19 AM Thanks.
I know how to have her get the kills, it's just I can't bring myself to push the healer forward due to bad habits. She HAS TO stay in the very back. Meh, time to drop that lousy playstyle of mine. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: Yegolev on September 10, 2008, 08:32:44 AM You can buy mana potions and use those during battle, the 200-hel ones give 10 mana. Of course, my healer uses a bow and I put her in the Robber club so she steals mana from the guys next to her, who happen to be the brutal killers and include my red mage mana factory.
I am doing something wrong because I have no idea how to execute a tower attack. Since I can field ten fighters at once, I expect to have ten primary characters to level, but I might have a mage rotation. It's slow going for me due to scheduling and playstyle, so I'm not sure. What is this game and why are so many people playing it? The best JP console tactics game ever. All others are number two or lower. Title: Re: Disgaea 3 Post by: schild on September 10, 2008, 08:37:13 AM Yup, the club system is how you effectively level up little useless punks if you don't want to use the classroom world. Thankfully, the classroom world plays out like a puzzle game, so I enjoy the shit out of it.
