Horrifying numbers left and right.

I wonder if it's strictly software business or if it's for the entire company. Still some pretty stagering numbers.

It's hardware and software (visit link to see revenue figures where it's mentioned).

Whoa.

Quote
ctivision was a power player in three important areas of software in the past year: music games, shooters, and movie licenses. The Guitar Hero franchise has generated over $1 billion in sales (most of that for Activision), with over $820 million just since the October 2007 launch of Guitar Hero III.

I knew Guitar Hero was a profit monster but this is about an order of magnitude more than I expected.

2.6 billion for Nintendo is freakin' insane. I guess that's what happens when you don't make your console a loss leader, eh?

Nintendo at the the top makes a fair bit of sense with hardware included, but Disney in second?

The collective posters of f13 = niche market.

For every comic book guy MMO player who demands the perfect sandbox game, there are 50 children who are happy if Lightning McQueen and Ariel just show up on screen and dance for them. Don't underestimate the power of the IP.

And for all that we like to bag on movie-based games, Disney turns out some really good kids games.  They work precisely because Disney knows better than to care what jaded "real gamers" want, instead just delivers twitch puzzles that require the reaction time of a 7 year old and little to no thinking, and in place of a plot a running series of gags you will only get if you've seen the movie 8 times.

How the hell did EA lose so much? At least MS and Sony can blame hardware costs.

They bought Bioware/Pandemic and like 4 other companies.

EA also likes to write things like actual game development budgets into the books as a "one time loss", rather than an ongoing cost of business.

I gotta be slow, but I don't understand the graph..

Example:
Sony makes $12,945 in revenue including hardware, but as a publisher it looses $1,255.

"The Games division as a whole (which includes hardware and software) lost over $1.25 billion, most attributable to losses on PlayStation 3 hardware production and sales." (http://www.edge-online.com/features/edges-top-20-publishers-2008?page=0%2C13)  :uhrr:

Edit: sorry lack of coffee i take it all back... fuck sony/ms are getting hammered ;)

C'mon Sauced, you know better. The $12,495 is all sales before deductions of operating costs. After factoring the cost of development, production and paying employees they lost $1,255.
