Title: Metal Gear Solid 4 (ENDING SPOILERS!)
Post by: Riggswolfe on July 24, 2008, 06:47:49 AM
I know there's an MSG thread but it's mostly about online.

I wanted to talk about the ending. I just finished the game last night and was disappointed about several things:

Meryl and Johnny? First off, she despises him most of the game, now she wants to marry him? I mean, the dude is played as comic relief, literally shitting and farting most of the time, then he becomes Mr. Badass and Meryl falls for him? Speaking of Meryl, she never once mentions Snake at the end of the game? WTF?

Johnny, Meryl and Raiden surviving? WTF? I love Meryl but Jesus, they had that big operatic making a final stand moment, get shot to shit. And live. Raiden gets run over by a big fucking sub to save Snake. And lives. Then gets stabbed by half a dozen men during his armless swordfight. And lives.

I'm glad Snake didn't shoot himself since that would have been a pussy way to go. But I would have preferred to see him drop dead after the fight with Liquid than the way things went with the Big Boss epilogue. I think that would have been the best ending.

Overall, it felt like Hideo pussed out at the end and wanted a "happy" ending. I say happy because it was still bittersweet but really, he could have made it much more tragic and Shakesperean than he did.

I wasn't sure who was going to survive in those moments to be honest.  But I'm happy with how things ended.  There was some pretty dramatic shit going on during the journey to the end.

I had some of those exact thoughts.  And yet, I can't seem to think of it all as "disappointing".  I think the way they offed Naomi - even with Otacon's hammy performance - was handled well (fine, fine, I got a bit weepy eyed).  Raiden's ending (or lack thereof) was a bit over-the-top, but I nearly managed to like the character by the end of it.
