Title: Hotels in New York Post by: NiX on July 22, 2008, 12:58:03 PM Planning a trip to New York for late August. Need some advice on places to stay for fairly cheap in Midtown. Need rooms with double beds, so pricing for a single wouldn't do me much good.
Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: schild on July 22, 2008, 01:26:26 PM Cheap and New York do not go hand in hand.
That is, if you want to do it right. Is this like, for pleasure? If so, pick somewhere else. Or find a friend to stay with. Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: NiX on July 22, 2008, 01:34:13 PM With friends, for pleasure and by cheap I mean under $300 a night.

But he's an elitist, so I don't know how good his advice will be. I'll page Joe. As for you Ookii, you just wanted to post Shatner. Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: Joe on July 22, 2008, 02:24:33 PM If you don't reek of gamer, I've got a place in the nice part of Brooklyn and a pretty swank air mattress. We go back far enough I can put you up for a bit.
Otherwise, "cheap" and "midtown" don't go hand-in-hand. That goes for everything: lodging, food, entertainment, chicks. Finding a hotel that's not a flophouse for less than $400/night in midtown is going to be tough. If you're set on staying on Manhattan, I know a great hostel in Hell's Kitchen (don't let the name scare you; you can walk naked through HK) that has double bed rooms, only you may have to share a bathroom, for what looks to be about $80/night: http://www.hostels.com/en/availability.php/HostelNumber.5429 Conversely, you have The Pod Hotel (http://podhotel.com/), which is more expensive than the hostel, but you can get a tinyyy room with a double bed for about $150-200/night, depending on the time of year and the day. I wrote this review elsewhere: Quote My stay at The Pod Hotel was pretty good. While the hostel-style, bunk-bed-with-a-shared-bathroom option was enticing, I instead chose to stay in a room with a double bed and private bath. I'd guess the entire room was about 100 square feet, and they managed to cram all the amenities you'd expect from a big boy hotel into the space - bed, AC, shower (they had a rainwater shower head, so the water shot down from above - this is the coolest thing ever), toilet, sink and TV - there's just less dead space between it all. I did have one existential moment when the place reminded me of a prison cell, but then I remembered I had an LCD TV and WiFi. I'd definitely stay there again, but one week was definitely long enough to get The Pod experience. If you've got a lady friend coming along that fears other people's soap, The Pod may be your best bet. It's small and kinda cramped, but if you're visiting New York, the only time you should be in your hotel room is when you're passed out anyway. Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: MuffinMan on July 22, 2008, 04:02:07 PM I stayed at the New Yorker in 2002 for a few nights. Can't remember what I paid then but it looks like it comes near $300/night now. No complaints at all while I was there. Room was pretty small, couldn't have been much bigger than 9'x9' with a queen bed but we were only in the room to sleep anyways. Great location too, right by MSG/Penn Station.
Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: Selby on July 22, 2008, 07:19:51 PM I paid $385/night to stay in Manhattan in the world's tiniest chain hotel with barely enough room between to get me between the bed and the walls. That was 3 years ago.

Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: Signe on July 23, 2008, 06:06:57 AM No, my suggestion is better. He'll have fun at the YMCA!

Title: Re: Hotels in New York Post by: Paelos on July 23, 2008, 11:49:02 AM I've stayed in the New York Palace Hotel before, which is very nice. The rooms aren't huge, but if you go in late August, things aren't usually as expensive. I looked on their site for late August rates, and a double room is under $300 depending on your dates. The hotel is across the street from Rockefeller and St. Patricks.
It's 4+ stars, so you might want to check it out. |
