You have to go places other than /b/.  I find plenty of wallpapers and interesting tv/ anime discussions in the appropriate subforums.  If you can find a time that /gif/ isn't spamming porn rips or gore/ suicide pics there's some funny shit in there, too.  It's the "18+" forums that suck the life out of you, leaving you a broken shell of a human being.

Also some sections can be useful simply as somewhere you can ask very esoteric questions and are likely to get a few replies, though obviously you need to take any answers you get on 4Chan with a barrel of salt.

4chan is the single most useful place to get a quick answer, a rapidshit of porn, or wallpaper. If you think otherwise, you're pretty much doing it wrong.

It's a popular website that fell into an interesting trap of not being able to capitalize on it due to content. You can't advertise pr0n or you pigeonhole yourself into being a pr0n site and you can't advertise normal stuff because they don't want to be attached to anything naughty. I would imagine that people reading the WSJ and thinking about online business would be very interested in this case study.

It wasn't really even started for a business purpose. It was a place where people posted random images and porn and it had one of those 1 in a million lucky shots where it caught on and became a meme-machine. The money aspect of it for Moot seems to be just about keeping the website itself running.

I know it wasn't started for business purposes, but it's still interesting to business minded people in an industry that's in it's infancy.

This thread reminds me that I despise the word "meme," and that hate is doubled when it's combined with something internet related.

From what I gather, 4chan seems to me like the worst sort of unmarked strip of club in town, except on the net. I've driven by, seen it below from high above on the overpass, but will never get within 50 yards of it. Maybe even that is too close.

But the word is considered correct English and being used accurately.

I was actually asking whether it had been established he was trolling, not whether he was awesome. None the wiser.

The page title for /b/ for a few days was hahahaha, and it said where the news announcements usually go "Trolled, bitches!". This was, I think, the day after the WSJ article was circulated around the site.

Whether by that he means he trolled 4chan, the WSJ, or both is up to you.
