Title: Good 'ol Games
Post by: NiX on July 10, 2008, 02:29:26 PM
Ever wished you could play an old game on XP/Vista without a problem? The guys who made Witcher do and they're doing something about it. (http://www.gog.com/en/intro)

Sweet. Will it be like ScummVM and use your old CD's or will you purchase new ones ?

Reads like Digital distribution to me.

I think I will love this.

They're looking for publishers who want to get their old stuff up. Poke whoever made the game and tell them to get it up there.

I can understand Vista users maybe wanting to do this, but....all of my old games still run. Zero problems. I run XP SP2. I can still run stuff At Least as old as BG1 and Fallout 1.

Not sure how anyone else has a problem unless their OS is weirded out somehow.

BaK was released as freeware so they dont have to poke anyone.

This will be awesome. But I would've liked it a LOT MORE had it just been part of STEAM. I do not like the idea of a thousand competing platforms. Steam and Gametap and D2D is already too many. Irregardless of whether they're all doing slightly different things.

Right but it hasn't worked for me since I ran a Pentium 2 MMX

I've managed to get it to work every time I've had the urge over the years. Google will probably reveal nerds who have solutions to whatever problems you have.

I always fiddle with DosBox and convoluted solutions like that for about 5 minutes before throwing my hands up in despair and wandering off to do something else.

Uh, gonna wait until I hear more about what they've got lined up before I get too excited.  At least half the games they display at the top of the page are either already on Gametap, or have been confirmed for the near future (like Fallout).

We apologize, but the GameTap service currently is available only in the United States and Canada. The GameTap service will be expanding into additional countries, but no release dates are available at this time.

Being UScentric as you are that might mean shit to you, but it explains why I am excited about this one, being from Europeans and all.

Don't be insulted about that statement now. If you weren't UScentric I would not read this site because I can get information about my own neighborhood and discussions with countrymen on websites from around here.

Just saying Gametap is an American continent thing that might get expanded to some larger European countries in the future, but my backwood of a country would likely be at the bottom of the list.

CD Projekt, being an Eastern European company has more incentive to make this a thing for other European countries as well. Which I'm excited about.

I think CD Projekt might have a tough time getting publishers to sign up for this.  Thus far I think they've only confirmed Interplay (who would probably suck dick at this point for a few bucks towards getting a Fallout MMO developed) and Codemasters.

What games haven't you been able to get to work on Vista?  I never had any trouble.

This reminds me of a project I was going to do....hook up my 486 to my hdtv. Ultima 7 rides again!

Thinking more about it, it would be terrific if they used Steam for content delivery, and had access to "Steam cloud" for save games.

Speaking of good old games, I just finished Mass Effect and I'm broke so I busted out the old cd pile. Chose Age of Wonder: Shadow Magic. That's a fun little strat game (that also works in widescreen natively :)). Was AoW2 any good? Will they ever make a new one?

It wasn't bad, but all I really remember about it with any specificity was that it was hard.

I just reinstalled Alpha Centauri, myself...

Alpha Centauri was second in the re-ordered pile. GalCiv was a contender, but I was thinking I should get the new one at some point.

I'm signing up.  Maybe they can fill in some gaps for me.  I have System Shock on physical media, for example, but getting that bitch to run on my machine is not possible... but then I haven't tried it with the Core2Duo so I might give that another whack soon.

I'd like for there to be just One Service To Bind Them All but it still beats digging through bins at Wal*Mart by eleven miles.

Wait, what?  I just reinstalled SMAC this weekend, too.  I was expecting to run into problems running it but so far I've had zero problems in XP SP2.  Still, I'd throw down some hard earned money for an Alpha Centauri Civ IV expansion.  Hell, I'd settle for a good mod.

Now if this GOG sells the Alien Crossfire SMAC expansion, I'm there.  $100+ for a fucking used expansion for the lose!  :mob:

Alien Crossfire is the best example I've seen for pirating software. Fuck you, Firaxis.

Hey spiffy. Seems if you signed up before today, you're guaranteed into the beta. Email just went out since they delayed it a bit:

The announcement of GOG.com surprised everybody - gaming media, gamers and the competition. But it was your reaction to our initiative that exceeded our wildest expectations. We would like to thank you very much for showing such incredible interest in GOG.com. We were originally planning to launch the closed beta on August 1 for a small set of people, but our plans have changed and we're delaying the beta a bit. We've decided to reward all of you for your great interest in GOG.com and we'll give early access to everyone who signed up!

Planescape Replay Crew of 2008, reunite! Or at least Fallout!

It's a small price to pay considering what you get, however I agree.  It's not as bad as it used to be.  Desktop shortcuts would make all that go away.
