Title: Need a Recommendation on a RTS/Strategy Game
Post by: Draegan on July 09, 2008, 07:12:25 AM
I havn't played many PC games that weren't MMOs this year and I'm yearning for a game that's like "crack where I realize the sun is coming up and I need more" type game.  These are usually RTS and Strategy type games.  I'm looking through some reviews and such but I can't really decide.

Gal Civ
Europa III
Sins
Settlers

Anything I'm missing?  Suggestions?

Edit:
Maybe Ill just go get Ceasar IV since I loved III so much back in the day.

I just picked up Command & Conquer 3, I'm jonesing for SC2 and since that won't be out until, well, who knows when, I grabbed it off the shelf at best buy.  Even though it's a year old it still looks great and is a very well done rts.  It is an RTS though, don't expect anything ground breaking.

I bought GalCiv a while back, haven't been able to get into it.  I also have Sins, it's amazing for 5 hours and then you wander off and forget about it.

Dawn of War  or Company of Heroes if you've never played them.   DoW is still my go to RTS, even if Dark Crusade Soulstorm is ass on toast.

GalCiv latest expansion qualifies (Twilight of the Arnor). There's an all in one pack for sale on their website. Game with expansion is far better than original game so you might as well get them all at once.

Civ4 fall from heaven mod also.

I also recommend Dawn of War.

Caesar IV is going to play more like Children of the Nile than like Caesar III. Tilted Mill is partly composed of the City Builder dev team from Impressions, but they've taken the city building in a different direction. City layout is still important, but the games have more emphasis on the individuals who make up your population. Your peons will walk to their places of employment (or work in their homes), and they will walk to the vendor for their various goods. Instead of having each service send out walkers.

Bottom line. You're not going to be laying out roads to restrict the movements of your walkers. No more stop signs :)

Civ4 was good but I played that already (not the expansions).

Perhaps I'll try GalCiv.  Almost did a few months ago.  Like the deal of getting all in one.

--

I thought Dawn of War was an older game?  Don't know too much about WH40k franchise, quick search shows that it was released 4 years ago with some expansions that have been released in recent years.  Whats the story on that game?

Company of heroes, and Supreme Commander.

World in Conflict is really good.

Company of heroes, and Supreme Commander.

I tried the Supreme Commander demo.  I had a great time with it but it seemed if I got any further in progression it would become insanely complicated.

I'll look up Company of Heroes and World in Conflict.

edit:  World in Conflict looks pretty good from the gamespot review I just watched.

Yeah, thats the point of my recommendation. The two games are complete opposites. SC is all about large numbers of disposable units. CoH is about small numbers of valuable units.

So you have all bases covered depending on mood.

You could get the Beyond the Sword expansion and try playing Fall from Heaven II (http://kael.civfanatics.net/).  It is really good, and pretty much a whole new game.

Medieval II.  6 artillery units vs an advancing horde of saracens is pure joy.

FFH2 is in every way a professional quality product (well, except for their use of copyrighted music samples). It rekindled my interest in modding Civ after a decade of downtime.

Seriously. If you liked Master of Magic, you'll like this.

Any of the Total War games really but I'd recommend Rome slightly above Medieval II. I guess it depends on personal preference but Rome just kept my attention slightly better, something about crashing Roman Legions against Barbarian hordes slightly more than seeing hordes of filthy peasants slowly massacring each other :)

I preferred Medieval for a couple of reasons.  One, Rome didn't have trebuchets or crude cannons.  As someone who usually has 6 artillery units with his armies, catapults just won't do it for me.  Secondly, I sort of liked the politics of Medieval.  Having to skirt around excommunication and assassinating the cardinals of rival nations had a certain Machiavellian charm to it.  I used to keep a diplomat permanently stationed outside of Rome just so I could drop some money on the Vatican if I was on the pope's shit list.

ETA:  And hearing, "Ja, Kaiser!" every time I ordered a unit around had it's charms too.  I love the Holy Roman Empire.

I actually didn't particularly like the FoH Civ4 mod, after all was said and done...just too damn busy.

Same here.  Also, the civ upgrades don't really correlate to anything I really could intuitively grasp.  I know that an ironclad beats the hell out of a trireme.  The Glaive of Khashallah vs the Ebony Gate?  Not so much.

Dawn of War is a good classic. You should be able to find a bundle at bargain price now.

Dawn of War indeed. Here is a demo of it : http://www.gamershell.com/download_6943.shtml

Also Soulstorm if you are into Warhammer. And C&C3 is rather fun.

I <3 Age of Empires III a good degree. I didn't like Caesar IV as much as III. The new Nile/Egypt sim is up on Steam.

So I decided I wanted to stick with the pew pew of space so I ended up getting Sins yesterday.  Also the Gold addition of Supreme Commander was there for 30 bucks as well so I picked it up on a whim.

Played for 6 hours last night with Sins.  Now I'm on 4 hours of sleep and I'm posting this when I think I may be late for work.  Awesome.

I think I may try World in Conflict next if I don't get into Sup Com.

Isn't World in Conflict that crappy alternate-history shooter?

Sorry, my fault. I was thinking of Turning Point: Fall of LIberty.

I'm surprised how much I'm interested in the storyline of World in Conflict. They play it off well.

I need a recommendation too. I like the city building style of strategy/RTS. Something along the lines of Settlers, but not nearly as complex as SimCity. Suggestions?

I had an itch to this as well which is why I mentioned Ceaser IV, but people have warned against it.

My life as king.

My Life as King isn't like either. Maybe, Anno 1701? Well, that's a little complex. Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile? It's on Steam now.

I take back even this slight recommendation.  Mobile units that will sit and take fire until they are destroyed because they are being attacked by something a quarter inch outside their range, after 9 patches, is not something I will suggest anyone play.

lotta sound problems with Sup Com, totally took me out of the storyline. Didn't get expansion.
