Title: getdropbox.com
Post by: schild on June 25, 2008, 12:05:56 PM
I got in today. Have 10 invites. If anyone wants one, post in the thread, will send to email address on file.
My invites are gone, but other people might have some now. Who knows. So keep posting, I guess.

I think Ookii should have some also.

Edit: Only established members are going to get invites in light of the added weight of having superior free accounts when it goes live.

Looks like a user friendly CVS / SVN repository.

Or a gussied-up version of WebDAV.  I'll take an invite, would love to play around with it.

.mac ?

Not quite .mac. It's really streamlined, but the way they've designed it basically says: This has no reason to exist if it ever costs money.

# After the Beta period, is Dropbox going to continue to be free to use?

We haven't fully determined a pricing structure yet, but the high level plan at this point is:

    * Free accounts (on the order of 1GB of space)
    * Paid accounts (likely different tiers of space allotment)
    * Beta users will keep their accounts (with more storage than the free accounts) after launch

Ok, I'll use it at live.

looks more filesharing with backups than a VCS.

If you've got any invites left, I'd be up to play around with this.

I like the synced "shared" folder it has and the auto photos folder seems cool. Google Docs share works the same way for limited file types (I think). Here's a list of all of the free online storage sites. (http://blog.putplace.com/2008/05/27/cheat-sheet-how-to-get-124-gb-in-free-online-storage/)

Geezus that was fast, Schild.  I had the invite before my other browser window finished loading.

Thanks!

I don't know anything about this but between Apples (misguided IMO) Mobile ME and the upgraded Google Docs (offline client, group permissions) I can't see how a service like this can get critical mass.

EDIT: Unless the revision control and diff/merge tools are super skookum and way easier to use than SVN. Google docs has some collaboration tools now but I can see that being useful.

Title: Re: getdropbox.com
Post by: Samwise on June 25, 2008, 02:19:55 PM
There doesn't seem to be any merging to speak of, but the revision control is about as easy as it gets, and it does detect conflicts (it just alerts you that your change conflicted with what was there and stores it as an extra "conflicting" revision that you can try to deal with manually).

I don't think it's any sort of replacement for a real version control tool, but for nontechnical people looking for a place to store pictures and whatnot it seems pretty decent.

Hmmm. Think I'd bank on Google Docs/Google Sites then. Their new stuff is pretty cool, particularly the new offline client. Never mind, I'm just derailing - carry on!

I see this as more of a competitor to Microsoft's Life Foldershare thing. It's main job is to keep your files synced across multiple machines. The sharing stuff is just gravy. I don't think Google has any solution for general file storage currently, which honestly I find somewhat shocking because cloud storage is definitely "the coming thing." For years I've used Google Pages as my online file storage mechanism, which is kludgy at best.

I've got a few to hand out.  I can't see people's emails in their profiles, though, so the first 5 to PM me with email addresses get an invite.  Gogogo!

This is a great service. I've been testing it for a couple of months now. It works on PC/Mac which is part of what sold me, but the CVS-style features and the easy integration into Explorer/Finder are what sealed the deal.

One note about the integration is that dragging and dropping a file into the Dropbox folder will perform a "move" on it since the OS sees it as another directory. It works this way on both PC and Mac, so if you want to keep a copy elsewhere locally for some reason, just remember to copy instead.

In any case, I have 5 invites I am willing to part with. PM me with your e-mail address if you would like one.

Hmmm. Gonna set up a FRAPS dropbox. And start having my screenshots go directly to the dropbox directory and just change it before I start playing a game. Useful++!

snap

i just realized, since you can't pick the install directory, you can't have more than one account on a machine.

hi kishore,

we'll be adding a way to do this; in the meantime, if you're feeling adventurous and know your way around the registry (i assume you're on windows), you can do the following:

1) close Dropbox
2) go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Evenflow Software\Dropbox

and change "DropboxPath" to your desired location

3) (optionally) move your existing Dropbox folder to that new path
4) restart Dropbox, and it will either immediately be in sync, or if you didn't move your Dropbox folder, it will let you re-link your account and will download all your files.

if you prefer, you can also just sit tight and we'll add a simpler way to do this in the next month or two.

Rock on.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND That's not where it is in vista. Fucky.

Ok, added the registry data myself. Worked frawressry. Now on an empty harddrive called.... Dropbox.

Weee. Now it's useful.

Well, found a great amazing useful use for Dropbox. Screenshots while I'm playing.

http://www.getdropbox.com/gallery/39720/1/screenshots?h=81384c

I'll use that to keep a gaming diary of what I'm playing. FRAPS is set up so I just pick the folder before I start playing and it'll autopopulate as I play. Spiffy. I like doing things like 'removing drag and drop from list of things I need to do.' Uploading in the background while I play is spiffy also.

That's if you have the upload bandwidth to handle that without screwing up your ping.

We do. Apparently.

Images aren't that big, and DropBox throttles itself automatically (currently to 70% bandwidth capacity, soon to be configurable).  (link (http://www.getdropbox.com/faq#connectivity))

Title: Re: getdropbox.com
Post by: Lantyssa on June 25, 2008, 06:04:47 PM
Oh good, it is configurable.  I was about to worry about its usefulness because of the forced location.

Btw, what's the capacity on this new toy? Also, how are folks feeling about the services security?

Title: Re: getdropbox.com
Post by: schild on June 26, 2008, 09:36:31 AM
2GB. Security seems decent but I don't know enough about security to really say even that.

Will probably go up in size for beta users as competitors offer bigger boxes than that at the base level. I'd expect it to be at least 5GB at launch for beta users. My real question is of bandwidth concerns.

I wouldn't store anything sensitive on it, personally, if only because everything in it gets replicated across every machine.

Uploading to dropbox. Also, gifs don't animate when you click 'em.

If you're uploading at 20KB/s, then that's 70% of your connection speed. Unless your ISP is throttling you.

Ah, had stuff in my photo folder. Too bad the public folder isn't browsable like the photo folder. Need both functionalities in the same folder imo.

Throttled to fuck and always complaining about it. Switched to the public cable modem (with a few dozen patrons using it) and getting about 200KB/s up.

Hmm, m'kay, looks pretty spiffy.  I appreciate the theory, though the viability of the thing as a money-making venture seems a bit .com bubble-ish to me.  Anyhow, if someone has an invite handy, please drop it on me.

Hopefully they add 'copy public link' support for the individual photos too, have to move them to Public to get a single image URL.
