Title: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2008, 06:16:12 PM I think I just witnessed the greatest golf performance in history.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Trippy on June 14, 2008, 06:21:37 PM What happened?
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2008, 06:25:10 PM Woods is basically on one leg because of his recent knee surgery yet on the back 9 coming in made 2 eagles (55 foot 6 foot breaker down hill, plus a 25 footer on 18) plus a one-hop chip-in birdie from the hellacious rough to take a one shot lead going into Sunday. Unreal.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Trippy on June 14, 2008, 06:50:09 PM Is his knee that bad?
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2008, 06:54:57 PM He was almost falling over after his follow through and practically using his driver as a cane walking up the fairway. It was pretty obvious how much pain he was in. It was like 1988 Kirk Gibson, only instead of one at-bat it was 33 strokes on the back nine.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Trippy on June 14, 2008, 06:58:50 PM Wow, the articles I read the previous two days didn't mention it being so bad. I'll have to tape it tomorrow.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2008, 07:04:19 PM Tiger admitted after the round that it is getting progressively worse. It's clearly getting aggravated more as the round wears on and each day the pain increases. Amazingly gutty performance.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 14, 2008, 07:05:40 PM He needs to cut this shit out. He's the best player in the history of golf, and he doesn't need to put himself out early because he's mentally tough but not physically capable. I'm worried about him fucking up his further career over this. Just watching him slowmo swing on the knee pains me.

It's clearly getting aggravated more as the round wears on and each day the pain increases. Amazingly gutty performance. Yeah tonight's AP article that just got relased talks about that.Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 14, 2008, 08:53:29 PM It's an amazing thing to watch. It's rare that you see someone so committed to his craft. Dude has eleventy billion dollars and no need to put himself at such risk, but he has such a drive to beat Nicholas on major wins (the only real measure he feels is worthy) that he is willing to gut it out. I scared the hell out of my dog every time one of those miracles went in the hole because I was screaming so loud about how incredible the guy is. Screw recording, watch this shit live. It is history.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Viin on June 15, 2008, 01:09:38 PM I had heard that Tiger wasn't doing so good in the Open but no one bothered to mention his knee! It's good to know he wasn't just suckin'!
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 15, 2008, 04:55:30 PM Guy is unreal. Playoff tomorrow. I wonder if I can call in sick and not be too transparent.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 15, 2008, 05:07:37 PM I'm glad it's early because I have class tomorrow right as this is finishing. God help me if it's close.
Personally, I have no idea who to root for. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: schild on June 15, 2008, 05:59:04 PM If you don't root for Tiger, you hate America.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 15, 2008, 06:05:04 PM Rocco is a great story though. David and Goliath going on tomorrow for sure.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Azaroth on June 15, 2008, 06:16:31 PM If you don't root for Tiger, you hate America. I agree. Arthroscopic surgery two or three months ago is srs bsns. HE CAN BARELY WALK BRO. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 15, 2008, 06:45:36 PM If you don't root for Tiger, you hate America. Guy off knee surgery who's the best player in the world Vs. Possibly oldest man to ever win a Major, who's never won one before, and who jokes around with his caddy on the course while wearing a Peace symbol belt buckle Honestly, I like them both. I'll be happy with either man winning. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Mr_PeaCH on June 16, 2008, 07:23:56 AM I'm not a huge golf fan but I decided I had a passing interest since the US Open is in my backyard this year; plus my folks are golfers and fans and there would be in attendance. I literally tuned in on Saturday with the announcers writing Tiger off with the troubles he had on the early holes and his knee and watched him begin to fight all the way back. You didn't have to be a golf fan to understand you were watching something pretty special and it was impossible to turn away.
I kept it on for most of the (6 hr?) day on Sunday as well; only slightly disappointed that it ended up a draw for a full 18 holes this morning. Damn but that would have been cool to let them keep going on in a sudden death format; the drama was so intense. Yeah, I'm happy to see either of these guys win it but I have to believe barring an emergency amputation of Tiger's left leg he's going to get it done. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 16, 2008, 09:08:04 AM Great live feed on usopen.com if you are stuck at work like me.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: WayAbvPar on June 16, 2008, 10:26:53 AM Days like this make my Mon/Tues telecommute so much sweeter
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Montague on June 16, 2008, 11:23:33 AM Great run by Tiger on Saturday, but I still think Nicklaus' 30 on the back nine at Augusta at age 46 to win is the greatest stretch of golf I've ever seen. He beat Ballesteros, Kite, Norman and Watson that day.
Maybe it's the Tiger mystique and dominance but the level of competition these days doesn't seem nearly as high or consistent. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Montague on June 16, 2008, 12:10:41 PM Tied again after 18 holes. Maybe they should just do pistols at dawn. :drill:
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: WayAbvPar on June 16, 2008, 12:26:16 PM This has been just absolutely riveting. What a great, great tournament.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: caladein on June 16, 2008, 12:31:09 PM Woods wins.
That was some awesome golf, and great plays by Mediate out of bunkers on the last few holes. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Viin on June 16, 2008, 12:50:37 PM Great game, even if the USOpen.com's live feed sucked ass most of the time. Video was way behind the audio which sucked for those tense moments.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: shiznitz on June 16, 2008, 12:51:08 PM Wall Street really ground to a halt for a while there. I had a bond salesman giving me a play by play because we can't watch it at work and he had nothing else to do.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 16, 2008, 10:30:16 PM Woods wins after playing no golf on a bum knee. Granted Rocco put the screws to him, but it still proves one thing.
Golf is over. Tiger Woods is going to ruin the sport with how awesome he is. He has to be stopped. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Cyrrex on June 17, 2008, 04:58:25 AM Golf is over. Tiger Woods is going to ruin the sport with how awesome he is. He has to be stopped. You mean like doing a Jeff Gillooly on his other leg? Make Tiger use his other hand.Golf is over. Tiger Woods is going to ruin the sport with how awesome he is. He has to be stopped. Heh, yeah force him to play lefty for the rest of his career. The sad part would be that with his work ethic, he'd probably be winning again in 4-5 years. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: schild on June 17, 2008, 08:28:08 AM Golf is over because no one is good enough to beat him. Right. That's just stupid.

Inigo: Oh, what's that? DPR: I'm not (Right)-handed! Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Teleku on June 17, 2008, 08:51:39 AM You reversed that, its actually Inigo who says he's not left handed in that bit of dialog :p.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Merusk on June 17, 2008, 09:01:52 AM Fuck. It's been about 5 years, I apologize.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 17, 2008, 09:02:45 AM Golf is over because no one is good enough to beat him. Right. That's just stupid. Hey, I love me some hyperbole. Get on board! Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Lantyssa on June 17, 2008, 09:36:22 AM Yeah, I was thinking of Princess Bride when I made the suggestion.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 18, 2008, 09:23:09 AM Turns out Woods has had a torn ACL for a year AND two stress fractures in his tibia for a month. He's now going to be out until next year including missing the Ryder Cup.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Cyrrex on June 18, 2008, 09:29:13 AM I can't figure out if that makes his Open performance all the more amazing, or all the more stupid. I'm leaning on the former.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Abagadro on June 18, 2008, 09:33:06 AM Since the ACL tear he has won 9 of the 12 tournaments he has played. Maybe he should just leave it that way.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 18, 2008, 09:49:36 AM I saw it and thought, well at least he's come to his senses. There's no reason to shoot your career in the head for one year of play. Tiger Woods still has 15 solid years left in the PGA.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Montague on June 18, 2008, 01:33:10 PM I saw it and thought, well at least he's come to his senses. There's no reason to shoot your career in the head for one year of play. Tiger Woods still has 15 solid years left in the PGA. Yeah but when you're that dialed in I can understand him wanting to play till his leg fell off. When you get on that hot streak you have to ride it for all its worth because once its gone there's no guarantee you'll return to form. Golf history is full of guys who were never the same after a serious injury. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: kaid on June 18, 2008, 01:41:25 PM Hopefully he takes the time to get fully better and I really hope he did not do permanent damage with his win of the US open.

Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Margalis on June 18, 2008, 08:59:35 PM I had to read this thread to figure out if the US Open was golf or tennis.
Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 18, 2008, 10:45:04 PM I had to read this thread to figure out if the US Open was golf or tennis. It's always golf. Wimbledon is the only tennis thing the average person recognizes. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: ClydeJr on June 19, 2008, 06:46:39 AM the USOpen.com's live feed sucked ass most of the time. Video was way behind the audio which sucked for those tense moments. The Tiger Effect (http://asert.arbornetworks.com/2008/06/the-tiger-effect/)Quote Starting around 9 am Pacific and peaking at 1:30 pm yesterday, many ISPs noticed an unusual increase in traffic. At first, a few security engineers worried they were under some type of new DDoS attack. But the flood of traffic did not appear directed at any individual customer — the gigabits of anomaly traffic surged to almost all customers from multi-national banks to the bakery down the street and home DSL / Cable users. For several ISPs, traffic into their network grew by 15-25%. In one provider, inbound traffic nearly doubled. It turns out that the U.S. Open played at Torrey Pines yesterday generated one of the larger Internet-wide flash crowds this year. Traffic dipped and peaked corresponding to Tiger’s initial misses and subsequent spectacular comeback as millions of office bound fans tuned in to the live NBC and ESPN coverage. Title: Re: U.S. Open Post by: Paelos on June 19, 2008, 08:53:39 PM That's awesome.
I love Tiger, but we get to see how good everyone else is for a year, now. |
