Title: Is it really that simple?
Post by: Murgos on June 13, 2008, 09:01:00 AM
Japan mandates waist sizes:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/13/world/asia/13fat.html?no_interstitial

33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women or face fines with the goal of no more fat people in 4 years.  I'm thinking we should go for it.  Diabetes?  Gone!  Overflow on airplanes?  GONE!

Yoichi Ogushi, a professor at Tokai University’s School of Medicine near Tokyo and an expert on public health, said that there was “no need at all” for the Japanese to lose weight.

“I don’t think the campaign will have any positive effect. Now if you did this in the United States, there would be benefits, since there are many Americans who weigh more than 100 kilograms,” or about 220 pounds, Mr. Ogushi said. “But the Japanese are so slender that they can’t afford to lose weight.”

God I fucking love Japan.  My authoritarian little heart just went pitter-pat.  :drill:

I'm going with "no". Sounds more like something the UK should do considering their love of Big Brother.

33.5 inches? That seems huge for Japan. Reasonable I suppose.

Reasonable is when it's guys like you and I who are 6' +.

For Japan, that's a generous limit! At 4'9", 33.5 would be a fatass.  :oh_i_see:

Wait, why the hell are women allowed a bigger waste size?

YOUR DOING IT ALL WRONG.

I have to call my broker and sell my vast array of Sumo related holdings.

Pregnancy?  Maybe the Japanese measure the waist where we would call the measurement hips?

If it's the hips ye gods.  Even at my thinnest I couldn't squeeze into 35.4" and my build is 'twig'.  The waist isn't that much better since we're not all blessed with hour glass figures.  Yes, we tend to be taller, but not every Japanese woman is short.

When his turn came, Mr. Nogiri, the flower shop owner, entered a booth where he bared his midriff, exposing a flat stomach with barely discernible love handles. A nurse wrapped a tape measure around his waist across his belly button: 33.6 inches, or 0.1 inch over the limit.

“Strikeout,” he said, defeat spreading across his face.

Win.

I'm pretty sure everyone measures waist. Hip measuring doesn't seem to be very useful.

Anyhow, don't feel bad. Women tend to have bigger hips, even if they're skinny. It's that whole "curvy, child bearing" thing, I guess. Heh.

Sensible policies for a happier Britain.

Maybe they should set minimum bust sizes for women, too.  A holistic approach would yield dividends, here.

Not scaling it by height seems pretty stupid.  I mean I know they all tend to be pretty short over there, but it's not like they're all fucking clones.

Here's a crazy idea:  why not just measure body fat percentage instead?

Here's a crazy idea:  why not just measure body fat percentage instead?

You just don't get the brutal simplicity of it do you?  Black & white, 33.5, yes or no?  Complicating it with things like proportion or composition voids the merit of the whole concept.  What's next?  Medical Conditions?  What about psychological conditions?

You start down that path and the slope will lead you to what we have today, no, it's all or nothing.

I say that when the rest of the world adopts this concept they go even further, in one hand a tape measure, the other?  A .38.

Sorry, you're right.  My idea might be more logical, but I actually like yours better.

Ehh, I haven't had a waist that small since the 5th grade.  Granted, I need to lose some pounds now, but with those restrictions, I'd be paying a fine as a thin, high-school athlete.

BMI is the same damn BS.  BF% is the only real measurement you can use for these kind of laws.

Yep, just goes to show that variations in build are a huge determinant.  By comparison, I'm a 190lbs rugby player, only 5'11 if we are rounding up, and yet have a waist size of 33 inches and so would be fine by this.  But on the BMI scale I am into the top half of overweight  :uhrr:
